Chapter 2

Author: Chrissy Paige
After saying goodbye to Mrs. Cooper, Madison drove home.

The moment she stepped through the door, she heard unmistakable sounds of something intimate happening in the living room.

Her entire body tensed. Still, she couldn’t stop herself from walking in.

On the couch, two people were wrapped around each other, kissing like the rest of the world didn’t exist.

One of them was her fiancé, Jake.

Madison froze, the pain cutting through her chest like a blade.

Xena let out a soft laugh and murmured, “Hooking up in your house is kind of thrilling. But aren’t you worried your fiancée might get upset?”

Jake pulled her closer with a lazy smile. “Why would I be? You have no idea how much she loves me. Even if we went further than this, she still wouldn’t get mad.”

It felt like someone had torn open Madison’s chest. The air rushed in, sharp and cold, leaving her completely hollow.

She let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh.

“So, because I love him, he thinks it’s okay to hurt me like this?” she thought.

It wasn’t that she couldn’t get angry. She just couldn’t bring herself to be angry with him.

But she was still human. And getting hurt still hurt.

Madison took a deep breath, forced herself to stay calm, and walked into the room with deliberately heavy steps.

The two on the couch didn’t even bother to separate when they saw her.

Jake looked up and gave her an order, like it was the most natural thing in the world. “Xena’s been drinking. Go make her some ginger-infused broth.”

Madison kept her voice calm. “We’re still engaged. If people see you with another woman like this, it could damage the Zimmer Corporation’s reputation. And how do you expect me to explain this to Mrs. Cooper?”

Jake suddenly snapped. “Don’t throw Grandma and my parents in my face. If it weren’t for them pressuring me, I would’ve never gotten engaged to you. I would’ve waited for Xena no matter how long it took.”

It felt like her heart had been crushed into a ball. The pain was so sharp she had to raise a hand to press against her chest.

Jake shot her an impatient look. “You’re fine. Stop pretending. Just make the broth. Don’t make me say it a third time.”

Madison laughed quietly to herself, bitter and numb. She didn’t say a word. She simply turned and walked toward the kitchen.

After Xena disappeared, Jake had turned to alcohol. Madison had gone out of her way to learn how to make a soothing, ginger-infused broth from a chef.

Every time he drank, she made it for him. However long his drinking lasted, she kept making that broth until her skills rivaled a professional’s.

Jake had once promised her that after he sent that live streamer away, she would never have to make ginger-infused broth again.

But now, he wanted her to make it for Xena.

At least it would all be over in a few days.

Madison tuned out the voices in the living room, prepared the ginger-infused broth quickly, and poured it into a bowl. Just as she was about to bring it out, Xena’s voice rang out behind her.

“You didn’t actually think I’d drink something you made, did you?”

Madison turned to see Xena standing there, wearing a smug, mocking smile.

Before she could respond, Xena stormed over, snatched the bowl from her hands, and dumped the steaming broth all over herself. The bowl slipped from her fingers and shattered on the floor.

She let out a sharp cry and clutched her arm, wincing in pain.

A second later, Jake rushed in. “What happened?”

He took one look at the broth on Xena’s clothes and the broken bowl on the floor, then turned to Madison with fury in his eyes.

“If you didn’t want to make it, fine. But why would you go this far? Why would you throw hot broth on Xena? Madison, I never thought you could be this cruel.”

Without another glance at her, he helped Xena up and led her upstairs to change.

Xena looked back at him gently. “Jake, she is your fiancée after all. It makes sense that she’d be upset. Don’t be mad.”

Jake’s anger only deepened. “She knew from the beginning that I loved you. What right does she have to be upset with you?”

Madison stood silently in the kitchen, staring at the mess on the floor.

She listened to their voices fading as they went upstairs.

And in that moment, she finally understood.

Mrs. Cooper had been wrong.

Jake had never loved her. Not even a little.

The moment Xena returned, Madison should have stepped aside instead of staying and becoming the person he despised.

But at least it wasn’t too late to walk away.

Once Mrs. Cooper’s birthday passed, she would leave North City for good and never look back.

When Madison rushed Dylan to rinse the burns with cold water, she finally realized what had happened. Someone had slammed into him from behind, and scalding pear syrup had splashed all over his back.He had also been holding a steaming cup of ginger tea, which he said he brought for her because she had been coughing lately. But the impact knocked it out of his hands and spilled it all over him. His palms were red and swollen from the burn.Madison quickly called the front desk and asked them to pick up a set of men’s clothes. Then she rushed back into the office building to find some ice packs.Just as she stepped out, she ran into Jake.He looked shaken and awkward. “Madison, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to bump into him.”Only then did she realize it was Jake who had hit Dylan. Her brows furrowed. “What are you doing here?”Jake hesitated. “I remembered you liked baked pears. I searched all over the city to find a shop that still makes them. I wanted to bring you some.”“I don

As soon as Madison stepped inside, Jenny watched her closely. “You really let go of the Zimmer family heir?”Madison shook her head. “There’s nothing to let go of. Once I walked away, I never planned to look back.”Jenny beamed. “That’s more like it.”She scoffed. “That guy only comes running back when the influencer he picked over you ends up with someone else and calls him rich and gullible. He swore he’d never make the same mistake again, but the second Xena Ford showed up, he forgot all about you. Who knows—next time it might be a Jenna Ford or a Wendy Ford.”Madison gave a quiet laugh. “I’m not going back.”Jenny raised her voice. “And just to be clear, this has nothing to do with my brother! But if you let that man treat you like a yo-yo, calling you back whenever he wants, then don’t blame me for cutting ties. I’d rather skip meals than hear another word about you being hurt by him.”Behind her, Dylan nudged Jenny. “Come on, sis. That’s enough.”Jenny grinned. “Okay, okay

Madison shook her head and spoke evenly. “You’re the heir to the Zimmer family. If anything, I was never good enough for you. The engagement is over. There’s no need to joke about it, Mr. Zimmer. Goodbye.”She said the word “goodbye,” but everything about her tone and expression made it clear that she meant it for good. She had already started to close the door when Jake called out, “Wait!”He scrambled to take off his backpack, dropped to his knees, and quickly unzipped his suitcase.“I mean it. I know I messed up, but I’m trying to make things right. Look, I found everything you once threw away. Your sapphire earrings, the rings... I even worked with the same designer to recreate a brand-new set for us.“And here’s the preserved rose and the scrapbook you gave me…”Madison took a step back, eyeing the pile of mementos in front of him with a calm, distant look. “Those are your things, Mr. Zimmer. You don’t need to show them to me.”Jake stayed kneeling on the floor, looking up

Jake had imagined a dozen possible scenarios, but the one thing he hadn’t considered was that someone else might already be by Madison’s side. She really didn’t want him anymore. He stood frozen at the door, his mind spinning so fast he couldn’t even figure out what kind of expression to wear.Dylan looked at the man outside the door, dragging a suitcase and carrying a backpack. After a moment of silence, he asked again, “Can I help you?”Jake replied stiffly, “My name is Jake Zimmer. I’m here to see Madison Spencer.”At the mention of his name, something flickered across Dylan’s face, but it passed quickly. He gave Jake a polite smile. “Wait here.”Then he turned back toward the apartment and called out, “Maddie, Jake Zimmer’s here to see you.”Maddie.Jake blinked, thrown off. He had always called her Madison and never used a nickname.“Did she like it when he called her that? Or was it because they were especially close that he could?” he wondered.Without realizing it, Ja

Jake carefully placed the sapphire earrings back into the storage box with the other pieces of jewelry he had spent weeks collecting. Every item held a memory. One by one, he packed them away as if storing pieces of his past. Then, without wasting another second, he rushed out the door and headed straight to the jewelry company where Madison had once designed their custom rings. He asked to see Miss Lincoln, the senior designer. She was an elegant woman in her fifties, poised and thoughtful. When Jake explained that he wanted to design a new set of rings with her help, rings he intended to use to win back the woman he loved, she raised her eyebrows in surprise.“Didn’t Miss Spencer already design a pair?” she asked.Jake’s expression darkened. He paused, then said quietly, “I made a lot of mistakes. I lost her. Now I want to win her back.”The designer nodded in understanding and opened her notebook. “What kind of design are you thinking of? Any ideas so far?”Jake gathered his

It was only now, thinking back on his grandmother’s words, that Jake finally understood. She had been right about everything. He had been hiding in the dark, lights off, trying to pretend none of it had happened. If he stayed in the shadows long enough, maybe he hadn’t done anything wrong. Maybe he hadn’t lost her. Maybe the person he wanted back was still waiting somewhere, just as she had been before. But every time he managed to fall asleep, he would wake up in a cold sweat, haunted by the look in Madison’s eyes. Her gaze was so calm and distant. The nightmares came again and again. After wallowing in self-pity for what felt like forever, Jake finally accepted the truth. Hiding wouldn’t bring her back.So he returned to the Zimmer family estate. His grandmother was in the home theater, watching her favorite old musical on the big screen. It was one of those classic love stories she had seen a hundred times, and she never seemed to get tired of it. Sometimes, when she was in the
