Chapter 2

Author: Thread of Moonlight
On the second day of filming, the production team dropped the first mission. It was called "Blind Match".

All 12 of us went into separate booths. Using voice changers, each person chatted with another contestant for five minutes, then wrote down who they felt the strongest spark with.

When I sat down in my booth, a deep male voice came through my headphones.

"Hey."

"Hey," I answered.

He went quiet for a second. "Your voice is… pretty distinctive."

I held the voice changer, listening to myself sound like a lifelong smoker with chronic bronchitis. I said, "Thanks. You sound like a tractor."

He went silent.

I'd planned to lay low and coast until I got eliminated, but my mouth clearly had its own career goals.

He chuckled softly. It was like an ice cube dropping into a glass with a little clink. He asked, "Are you always this blunt?"

"Depends on the person. You're lucky."

"Lucky how?"

"I haven't even started."

He laughed again.

In those five minutes, we covered the weather, breakfast, why the production team managed to make the coffee taste like some herbal concoction, and what we'd do with ten million bucks.

"I'd open a boxing gym," he said.

"I'd break my brother's legs," I responded.

He faltered, then asked, "What did he do to deserve that?"

"He made me come on this show."

"You didn't wanna come?"

I was honest. "I want the money."

He said, "Then you've gotta win."

"Are you gonna let me?"

"Sure."

I raised an eyebrow. "How generous."

"Well, I wanna win, too."

"Then what the hell are you letting me for?"

There was that laugh again in my headphones. It was low and weirdly nice to listen to.

I mentally slapped myself. Get a grip, Alexis. This guy was straight and doing his best to act like he was gay.

Five minutes passed, and Phil told us to write down our crush pick. My answer was simple—the prize money. When a staff member took my card, he looked like he'd just bitten into a lemon slice.

They announced the results at noon. I was the most popular contestant, which baffled me.

Seriously? Of all people to crush on, these guys had picked me?

Phil read the votes. "Wyatt Jamison picked Alex, Ethan Vaughn picked Alex, Mason Barrett picked Alex, Simon Hayes picked Alex…"

By the time he finished, my brain felt numb. Out of the 11 other contestants, 9 had voted for me.

The livestream chat went ballistic.

[Alex is out here breaking hearts left and right!]

[The colder he is, the hotter he gets.]

[He's the type of top who'll tell you to get lost but still tuck you in at night.]

[I'm calling it now—he's this season's ultimate dream guy.]

I tightened my fingers around my water glass just a little.

Tuck someone in? Nah. I'd just list the blanket online and sell it.

At dinner, Wyatt sat down next to me. He was the voice from the booth that morning. I recognized him the second he started talking, and it was clear he recognized me, too.

He pushed a plate of chicken breast over. "You barely ate at lunch."

I stared at the chicken breast, pale and depressing, like rock bottom in food form. "You call this dinner?"

He glanced down. "High protein."

"I'm here for a competition, not a prison sentence."

The corner of his mouth twitched. He took the plate back and then placed a honey-glazed pork rib on my plate. "How about this?"

I was about to say no, but my nose betrayed me first. The glaze was glossy, and it smelled way too good for anything cooked in a production cafeteria.

I picked it up and took a bite. It was tender and full of flavor.

I looked at Wyatt. "Did you make this?"

"Yeah."

"I thought you ran a boxing gym."

"Before that happened, I ran a small bistro for three years."

His résumé sounded even shiftier than this reality show.

Everyone else in the living room started giving us odd looks.

Ethan adjusted his glasses. "Do you two know each other well?"

"We've talked," Wyatt said calmly.

Mason immediately scooted over. "During the blind match?"

Simon slapped the table. "Aha! The winner of the blind match and Mr. Boxing already have a secret thing!"

I almost choked on my pork rib. "A secret what?"

Simon covered his mouth. "A secret… affair."

I looked around at this room full of straight guys forcing themselves to use vocabulary they'd clearly learned from binge-watching soap operas, not knowing how to feel. Honestly, I kind of wanted to laugh.

Before the evening vote, the production team pulled me aside for a solo interview.

"Alex, who do you think is the most likely to be the secret straight guy right now?" Phil asked.

"Wyatt," I said.

His eyes lit up again. "Why?"

"Because he gave me pork ribs."

"And that proves… what, exactly?"

I stayed deadpan. "Straight guys tend to show affection in very literal ways."

"Like?"

"Like feeding you meat."

Phil laughed himself silly.

Once the show aired, that interview clip went straight to the trending list.

Alex texted me from his hospital bed. "Lexi, you've gone viral."

I replied, "When's your leg gonna heal?"

"Not for a while."

"Great. Don't get too attached to the other one, either."

Right after I sent that, someone knocked on my door. I opened it to see Wyatt standing there with a bottle of antacid.

"You ate too fast tonight," he said.

I stared at the bottle, then at him.

He added, "Don't get the wrong idea."

"The wrong idea about what?"

He looked away. "I just don't want you to be too sick to film tomorrow."

"Uh-huh."

He shoved the bottle into my hand and turned to leave.

I called out, "Wyatt."

He stopped.

I lowered my voice. "You're straight, aren't you?"

The hallway light fell across his brow bone; his shadow stretched long over me, tall and close. He looked at me for a long moment, then asked, "Do you want me to be?"

Later on, many people asked me what the biggest thing I got out of that show was. Some guessed it was the money; some guessed it was the fame. Some even guessed it was Wyatt.I told them it was none of those. My biggest takeaway was that I'd confirmed one thing—most of the "rules" in this world were just made up to scare people. They said regular nobodies like me were supposed to do as we were told, said contracts were too complicated for me to understand, said the show's ratings mattered more than my dignity, said a young woman shouldn't make a scene, and said I should just suck it up because everyone did.But I refused to do that. Since I was a kid, I'd never been good at just taking things as they came and suffering in silence. If a customer at the auto shop tried to skip out on the bill, I could chase them for three blocks. Alexander had tricked me into competing in his place, so I'd tacked on an extra set to his physical therapy. The production team had tried to steal the priz

The shoot didn't continue in the end. More precisely, the original show was dead. But the viewers weren't having it. They wanted to see what happened next. After the platform got dragged so hard it nearly went offline, they swapped in a new production team and launched a new live reality show. The title was "Eleven Bros, One Queen".When I saw the name, I sat there in silence for a long time. "Who came up with this?"The new director raised his hand, looking sheepish. "It was the top pick in the audience poll.""What came second?""Queen Alexis and Her Hopeless Men.""…We'll stick with the first one."The new show had no script, no fake flirting, and no eliminations. It was just the 12 of us living in a villa, handling all the legal fallout, and livestreaming our daily lives on the side. The ten-million prize money was wired into a joint account under my lawyer's supervision. The 12 of us talked it over and decided to divide it based on contribution and losses. Wyatt and I got

The shoot had been shut down for three days when the platform finally sent someone. A director with the surname Rook showed up in a perfectly pressed suit, his smile as cold as if it had just come out of the freezer. He called all the contestants—those who'd been eliminated were contacted via video call—into the living room and started with, "This whole thing is just a misunderstanding."I sat on the couch munching on some nuts, while Wyatt shelled them next to me. With every one that I ate, he shelled three.Mr. Rook glanced our way, then went on, "There was indeed some miscommunication about the show's premise, but there was no fraud. As for the prize money, we'll reassess that based on the final broadcast results."Mason raised his hand. "Translations—you just don't wanna pay us, right?"Mr. Rook's smile remained in place. "Mr. Barrett, please don't get me wrong."Ethan pushed up his glasses. "The contract clearly states that the ten million is a guaranteed prize, not a perfor

The night before the third elimination, Ethan suddenly came to me. He handed me a folder and said, "Take a look."I flipped it open. Inside were the show's original application forms. All 12 contestants had filled out the "sexual orientation" field with the exact same thing—straight.I looked up. "How did you get this?"He adjusted his glasses. "My ex works in the platform's legal department."I said, "She's got a pretty wide job description.""She wants to get back together.""And you?"He was very calm. "I just want the money."Fantastic. Another straight guy beaten into shape by real life.Ethan added, "The production team knew from day one that we're all straight. They built the whole concept of this show around it on purpose. They wanna make the audience guess, make us act, and milk the drama."I frowned. "What about the so-called secret straight guy?"He looked at me. "There isn't one. No one is supposed to win this half-assed competition."My fingers tightened around

I only had one thought in my head—I was screwed. The interview room went so quiet it was like someone had yanked the plug on reality. Phil stared at me, the cameraman stared at me, and it felt like even the plant in the corner was staring at me.I slowly turned to look at Wyatt, whose jaw was clenched tight. He'd realized what he'd done, too.I asked him with my eyes whether he was out of his mind. He answered with his eyes that he could explain. I said with my eyes that he'd better do it.Phil was the first to return to his senses. "This woman?"I shot to my feet and slapped the table. "That's right."Everyone turned to look at me. I didn't even flinch as I lied, "To gay guys, their partners are all adorable women."Phil gaped at me, and Wyatt stared at me like I was the crazy one. The cameraman's shoulders shook suspiciously.I kept bullshitting. "That's just how it is with us youngsters. We're all about respecting diverse expressions."Phil clearly didn't buy it, but he did

Wyatt was last. When he stood up, the living room suddenly went a little quieter. He was tall, and he walked at an unhurried pace. Light pooled over his shoulders, giving him a heavy, pressuring calm.He wasn't holding any flowers. When he walked right up to me, every alarm in my head went off.No way. Was he really going to do this to me? He had to get a grip. We were rivals!Wyatt looked down at me. "Alex."I jumped in immediately. "I refu—"He stretched out a hand and held out a sheet of paper.I froze. Instead of flowers, he was giving me a photocopy of an IOU. It listed how much his dad owed, the interest, the creditor's name, plus a line of handwritten notes at the bottom.I looked up at him. He said, "I checked the contract we signed for the show. If a pair of temporary partners make it to the end, they split the prize money."Phil's face darkened. Production hadn't announced that rule.Wyatt went on, "I need the money, and so do you. Let's team up."The romantic atmos
