Chapter 1

My name was Alexis Callahan, and my brother was Alexander Callahan. He went by Alex, and I went by Lexi.

He'd signed up for this reality show, but the day before filming started, he broke his leg wrestling with someone at a bar and ended up in the hospital. So he shoved his ID, suitcase, and application materials into my arms.

"Lexi, you've gotta save my life here," he said.

I shot back, "Are you out of your mind?"

"You get ten million."

"Have I ever told you you're the best brother a girl could ask for?"

And that was literally all it took.

I'd thought I was just showing up to fill in for him. I would lay low the first week, get eliminated, and go home with 50 grand in appearance fees.

But ten minutes after walking through the door, I realized something was very wrong.

The first male contestant was Wyatt Jamison. He was six-foot-three with a buzz cut, and he looked totally ripped. He looked into the camera and said, "I'm gay."

Then he turned around, saw the female producer in the kitchen, and his ears turned red.

The second male contestant, Ethan Vaughn, wore gold-rimmed glasses and had that "clean-cut on the outside, trouble on the inside" kind of look. He said, "I've played for the other team for years."

The next second, his phone screen lit up. The caller ID said, "Ex-Girlfriend, Stop Calling Me."

The third male contestant was even more ridiculous. He introduced himself with, "I'm a bottom."

I glanced at the tattoo on his wrist. It said, "All My Exes Are Evil Witches."

I was speechless.

Seriously? Did the casting team just close their eyes and sweep people in with a broom?

All 12 of us sat down in the living room. The director, Phil Smith, told us to introduce, in order, our sexual orientation, job, and ideal type.

When it was my turn, I looked at the 11 pairs of eyes focused on me, all bright and innocent like a bunch of kids on the first day of school, and slowly said, "I'm Alex Callahan. I'm a freelancer. My ideal type is…"

I paused. Everyone stared at me.

I finished, "Whoever can give me ten million."

Behind the camera, Phil let out a cough that sounded suspiciously like a pig squealing.

The live comments flew by.

[LOL this dude is so real!]

[He looks real cocky.]

[Send help. Alex totally gives 'silent but could punch someone through a wall' vibes!]

[My money's on him being gay. No straight guy dresses that well.]

I looked down at the black hoodie I'd bought online for 20 bucks with free shipping.

Hey, being broke was also a fashion statement, wasn't it?

That first night, production set up an icebreaker game. The rules were simple—everyone drew a question card and had to answer.

The first question went to Wyatt. It read, "When was the last time your heart skipped a beat?"

He was quiet at first. His gaze drifted toward the kitchen, where the female producer was slicing fruit. His Adam's apple bobbed, and he said, "Just now."

Everyone went, "Whoa!"

Whoa, my ass. This guy was straighter than the telephone pole outside my apartment.

The second question went to Ethan. The card read, "If your crush confessed to you, what would you do?"

He pushed up his glasses. "It depends."

Phil pressed, "Depends on what?"

Ethan said, "On whether she's serious."

The room went quiet for a beat.

He scrambled to fix his blunder. "He. I mean, he."

I looked at him, and he looked at me. The air was thick with the kind of awkwardness that made us both want to call 911.

When it was my turn, my card read, "Who do you think is the most likely secret straight guy in the house?"

I looked up and did a slow sweep around the room. The other 11 contestants all sat up straight at the same time. I wasn't even joking—for a second, it was like watching 11 dogs that had stolen food off the table pretend to be innocent the moment their owner walked through the door.

I said, "Honestly, everyone looks pretty straight."

Phil's eyes lit up. "Why do you think that?"

"Because they're all trying way too hard."

Everyone laughed, except Wyatt. He just stared at me, a knowing look in his eyes.

Crap. Had he figured out I was a woman?

But all he did was lean in, drop his voice, and ask, "You, too?"

"Me what?"

"Straight."

I looked into his earnest eyes. Suddenly, I realized something even worse. Out of the 12 of us, aside from me, every single one of them probably thought they were the only hidden straight guy. And I was the only one who knew they were all straight.

But… I was a woman!

Later on, many people asked me what the biggest thing I got out of that show was. Some guessed it was the money; some guessed it was the fame. Some even guessed it was Wyatt.I told them it was none of those. My biggest takeaway was that I'd confirmed one thing—most of the "rules" in this world were just made up to scare people. They said regular nobodies like me were supposed to do as we were told, said contracts were too complicated for me to understand, said the show's ratings mattered more than my dignity, said a young woman shouldn't make a scene, and said I should just suck it up because everyone did.But I refused to do that. Since I was a kid, I'd never been good at just taking things as they came and suffering in silence. If a customer at the auto shop tried to skip out on the bill, I could chase them for three blocks. Alexander had tricked me into competing in his place, so I'd tacked on an extra set to his physical therapy. The production team had tried to steal the priz

The shoot didn't continue in the end. More precisely, the original show was dead. But the viewers weren't having it. They wanted to see what happened next. After the platform got dragged so hard it nearly went offline, they swapped in a new production team and launched a new live reality show. The title was "Eleven Bros, One Queen".When I saw the name, I sat there in silence for a long time. "Who came up with this?"The new director raised his hand, looking sheepish. "It was the top pick in the audience poll.""What came second?""Queen Alexis and Her Hopeless Men.""…We'll stick with the first one."The new show had no script, no fake flirting, and no eliminations. It was just the 12 of us living in a villa, handling all the legal fallout, and livestreaming our daily lives on the side. The ten-million prize money was wired into a joint account under my lawyer's supervision. The 12 of us talked it over and decided to divide it based on contribution and losses. Wyatt and I got

The shoot had been shut down for three days when the platform finally sent someone. A director with the surname Rook showed up in a perfectly pressed suit, his smile as cold as if it had just come out of the freezer. He called all the contestants—those who'd been eliminated were contacted via video call—into the living room and started with, "This whole thing is just a misunderstanding."I sat on the couch munching on some nuts, while Wyatt shelled them next to me. With every one that I ate, he shelled three.Mr. Rook glanced our way, then went on, "There was indeed some miscommunication about the show's premise, but there was no fraud. As for the prize money, we'll reassess that based on the final broadcast results."Mason raised his hand. "Translations—you just don't wanna pay us, right?"Mr. Rook's smile remained in place. "Mr. Barrett, please don't get me wrong."Ethan pushed up his glasses. "The contract clearly states that the ten million is a guaranteed prize, not a perfor

The night before the third elimination, Ethan suddenly came to me. He handed me a folder and said, "Take a look."I flipped it open. Inside were the show's original application forms. All 12 contestants had filled out the "sexual orientation" field with the exact same thing—straight.I looked up. "How did you get this?"He adjusted his glasses. "My ex works in the platform's legal department."I said, "She's got a pretty wide job description.""She wants to get back together.""And you?"He was very calm. "I just want the money."Fantastic. Another straight guy beaten into shape by real life.Ethan added, "The production team knew from day one that we're all straight. They built the whole concept of this show around it on purpose. They wanna make the audience guess, make us act, and milk the drama."I frowned. "What about the so-called secret straight guy?"He looked at me. "There isn't one. No one is supposed to win this half-assed competition."My fingers tightened around

I only had one thought in my head—I was screwed. The interview room went so quiet it was like someone had yanked the plug on reality. Phil stared at me, the cameraman stared at me, and it felt like even the plant in the corner was staring at me.I slowly turned to look at Wyatt, whose jaw was clenched tight. He'd realized what he'd done, too.I asked him with my eyes whether he was out of his mind. He answered with his eyes that he could explain. I said with my eyes that he'd better do it.Phil was the first to return to his senses. "This woman?"I shot to my feet and slapped the table. "That's right."Everyone turned to look at me. I didn't even flinch as I lied, "To gay guys, their partners are all adorable women."Phil gaped at me, and Wyatt stared at me like I was the crazy one. The cameraman's shoulders shook suspiciously.I kept bullshitting. "That's just how it is with us youngsters. We're all about respecting diverse expressions."Phil clearly didn't buy it, but he did

Wyatt was last. When he stood up, the living room suddenly went a little quieter. He was tall, and he walked at an unhurried pace. Light pooled over his shoulders, giving him a heavy, pressuring calm.He wasn't holding any flowers. When he walked right up to me, every alarm in my head went off.No way. Was he really going to do this to me? He had to get a grip. We were rivals!Wyatt looked down at me. "Alex."I jumped in immediately. "I refu—"He stretched out a hand and held out a sheet of paper.I froze. Instead of flowers, he was giving me a photocopy of an IOU. It listed how much his dad owed, the interest, the creditor's name, plus a line of handwritten notes at the bottom.I looked up at him. He said, "I checked the contract we signed for the show. If a pair of temporary partners make it to the end, they split the prize money."Phil's face darkened. Production hadn't announced that rule.Wyatt went on, "I need the money, and so do you. Let's team up."The romantic atmos
