Chapter 8

Author: Alma Finch
Theodore was anxious, whipping out a tissue, aiming for my face.

Before I could even object, he caught a fist square in the jaw.

Frank had come out of nowhere, and after decking Theodore, he spun around, all concerned.

"Was he bothering you? Don't worry. I've got your back."

I could not focus on Frank. I was too busy helping Theodore to his feet as he apologised over and over.

"Theodore, there's no need for apologies. What happened back then was a deal we both walked away happy from. It wasn't an insult. Honestly, I'm touched you even remember," I said.

Theodore let out a sharp breath and waved it off.

Frank tried to step forward, but I instinctively moved to shield Theodore, eyeing the man who had grown leaner and seemed wrapped in restlessness.

"Why are you here?" I asked, my voice icy.

Frank, a towering figure, suddenly stooped, his voice a whisper.

"I... I got permission to come see you from across town. I've waited so long. They said my good behavior earned it. I know I

"You're not sorry, Frank. You just lost your gamble. You thought you had it all under control, but when you fell flat on your face, you suddenly remembered me."It's because deep down, you know I'm the best you'll ever have. However, a mistake is a mistake. Why on earth would you think I'd give you another chance after everything?"Frank looked down, unable to meet my eyes, just shaking his head over and over."You know what, Frank? The love I wasted on you would've been better spent on animals. At least they'd appreciate it, but you? You always wanted more."With that, I walked past him, letting go of all my pent-up frustration.I had no idea what went through Frank's mind after that.He started showing up at the office every day with flowers, waiting for me.When I was too busy with my designs to eat, he would bring food right to the security desk.Anything I ever mentioned I liked, he found a reason to send it my way.I sent everything back or threw it away.In the office,

Twenty minutes after Frank left and shut the door behind him, Susanna was on the phone."It's all good, and the deal's sealed. Frank's clueless about the fake contract set to trip him up. Once it blows up, we'll swoop in and take over, just like we planned."I'm not head over heels for him. If he had the brains to ditch his girl, I might've considered keeping him as a pet. It's too bad. I guess I'll have to step in."Relax, you're still my number one."I shot up, hit replay, and my emotions swung from tears to laughter at the ridiculousness of it all.Frank's grand scheme, all that plotting and planning, was just a con. However, I was worn out too. He had messed up, and he had to face the music. When Frank decided to betray me, I was done playing his games. It took three days to wrench my heart free. That last revelation was a parting gift, though it came a little late.As Frank scurried off, my friend gave me a knowing look and a thumbs up."You're something else, you know t

Frank stayed silent, probably because he knew it was all a bunch of lies. He tried to speak, his despair evident, but all that came out was a feeble attempt."I'm not married to Susanna."Did being married automatically mean he was off the hook? That seemed way too easy. However, I had never been one to settle for less. The more I heard, the more my heart sank, and Frank seemed like a stranger to me.I remembered the old Frank, who came home thrilled after seeing a wedding in a park, lifting me up and twirling me around in joy.He said he had caught the happiness bug and wanted to walk through life with me, insisting I was the only one for him.I found out later that the bride at that wedding had dashed into a burning building to save her groom, scarring her face in the process. They got married without a second thought, and a colleague of mine ended up designing their wedding. On that same day, Frank and I experienced the power of love in our own ways. However, people chang

The emcee nudged Frank to speak, but he was pale, fixated on the video. He stumbled and fell on the stage, clutching the card like a lifeline. The murmurs started among the guests, they knew something was off.Susanna, trying to maintain her composure, marched over to Frank, her complaints spilling out as she tried to pull him up."What's gotten into you? Look, no matter what's going on, you're sticking with me until this wedding's over."Susanna, with a guilty flicker in her eyes, glanced at the bouquet Frank was holding, as if she wanted to grab it and hide it away. However, the moment her hand reached for it, Frank slapped it away with a forceful swipe. He even shoved Susanna, catching that fleeting look of guilt, and snarled at her."Didn't I warn you to keep your mouth shut about her? You got a death wish or something?"Frank's voice boomed so loudly that it echoed through the microphone and filled the room. The wedding was turning into a complete circus. Susanna, in a fi

Susanna's eyes flicked my way, her smile a secret shared with the air."What's up, Frank? Spot an old friend?" she teased."Nothing. My mistake," he said, shaking his head. His phone, usually buzzing with replies, was silent. That was not like the me he knew. His brow creased with a worry he could not place.I looked up once more, taking in the fairy-tale scene, and murmured to myself, "Dream fulfilled, in a way."I was not the one in the bridal gown, not the one saying 'I do', but that dream—that day—was my creation.Five years of love, five years of life—I had given it all. Then, I had my answer.I was lost in a haze of confusion. Every little detail of their wedding seemed to echo with my presence, with the ghost of my memories with Frank.I could not help but wonder if they would ever fight over those shadows of me in their future. However, it did not really matter anymore. Tomorrow was their big day, and it was also my cue to exit.'Frank, here's to your blissful union
