Chapter 5

Author: Doofus
Outside, the Chandlers watched as she stormed out and quickly told Finn, "Get some proper rest. We're going to check up on what Rain is up to."

They quickly left too, but Rain was dashing all the way out of the hospital, tears rolling down her dainty cheeks.

She felt endlessly humiliated—she was among the most beautiful in Longbeach College, but Finn had treated her with such indifference!

-

Meanwhile, Finn stayed in his hospital bed, unconcerned by Rain's departure.

After another series of checkups, Finn found himself in Dorian's office again. "Is there hope, doc?"

Dorian didn't meet his hopeful stare, his brow creased as he stared at the report.

Eventually, he sighed. "Canceration has begun, and I can't guarantee a full recovery. And we need to further test to determine if it will metastasize… Moreover, your health is poor in general, so spend a couple of months to improve your body's condition, as well as take suppressants."

Finn was also frowning after Dorian's report.

Staring at him for a while, Dorian eventually said, "This isn't a fever. Are you sure you're not telling your family?"

"I don't have family," Finn replied as soon as Dorian finished.

Dorian sighed. "Surgery and chemo are going to cost a lot. You should be prepared."

After getting a general diagnosis, Finn took a bag of prescriptions and went to get discharged.

The nurses who saw him leaving the oncology department were at once gossiping.

Seeker was on air recently, and Finn's appearance had been a hot topic.

There was already plenty to talk about with a rich kid having his place stolen for nineteen years, not to mention that Finn had good looks, so many in the hospital immediately recognized him.

"Don't you think the stuff in Seeker was scripted?"

"How could it be? His parents looked so emotional in the show!"

"In that case, why is he alone? And he has cancer too!"

"That's true… That's so cold of them!"

"Heck, my parents would dote on me if I caught a cold. Poor boy…"

Meanwhile, at the entrance, Finn was engrossed in his own thoughts when he felt a sharp pain on his forehead.

Even as he was yanked back to reality, he picked up a familiar scent.

It turned out that he had bumped into a young woman, knocking her to the floor!

Seeing that she dropped a stack of medical reports and medicine, he reached to help her up, but she smacked his hand away.

"Don't touch me! Stay away from me!"

It wasn't until she stood up that Finn recognized her.

She had a dainty face, pronounced chin, and facial features that were almost ridiculously pretty like a doll—a universal beauty in every sense of the term, if not for the prominent ferocity present on that visage.

She was Sue Cavill—Longbeach College's super heiress who was infamous for her pompous, domineering attitude!

Her family virtually ruled their city of Nublar, and it was alleged that even the dean of Longbeach College owed her due respect.

And now, she was snapping at Finn coolly, "Are you a bat? Watch where you're going!"

"I'm sorry…" Finn hung his head in apology, feeling a mix of different feelings.

After all, he was guilty of not watching where he was going.

Come to think of it, he had made her acquaintance in his previous life.

And Sue's mother, Mandy King, was a fellow cancer patient who had taken good care of him.

While Sue was herself sharp-tongued, she came to visit before his death.

And seeing that he was virtually skin and bones, she bought him a ton of stuff—hundreds of boxes of cherries, strawberries, and caviar… basically the most expensive of snacks.

It was nothing to her, but Finn never had been blessed with such luxury.

But now, Sue was standing akimbo as she got up, glaring at Finn haughtily. "What's that look for? Do you have a problem with me snapping at you? Or are you just that fearless?"

Her butler, Alfred Jones, felt a chill run down his spine, as the lady was a real handful!

It was certainly unlucky that Finn ran straight into her crosshairs, especially when Mandy's cancer was just confirmed…

Just the thought left him wondering who deserved more sympathy at that moment, but he was afraid to intervene when Sue had always been so overbearing.

Still, Finn held Sue's gaze for seconds and suddenly flashed a faint smile as he quietly said, "Yes, I'm just that fearless."

Sue was at first stunned, but she soon laughed. "Really? You're young, but you sure talk tough."

She reached down to pick up Finn's medical report, wondering what made him so audacious.

Could it be another terminal illness?

Still, shock showed all over her face when she got a good look.

Cancer…?

There was pain in her eyes just then, and she crumpled the sheet in her hand.

"What a jinx!" she snapped.

Finn, however, didn't linger since she clearly wasn't planning to punish him.

"He has cancer too, Ms. Cavill… Don't you think calling him a jinx is too much?" Alfred asked gingerly just then.

Sue snorted, looking even more upset just then. "You too? Telling me what to do now?"

She then noticed something else on the floor and picked it up to see that it was a student ID.

"Longbeach College, sophomore, mathematics department… Finn Lawson. He studies there too? And that name rings a bell…"

She was a sophomore too, but she couldn't remember the name at all as she was from the international faculty.

-

Finn headed to the finance department first to pay his tuition fees, and the accountants shot him weird looks. "Finn Lawson… from the mathematics department? You've defaulted for a week. Be careful not to default again."

Finn nodded. "Understood."

Still, he felt relieved that he didn't have to be pestered over paying his tuition fees again.

In his last life, his family had never given him money.

He had worked himself to death, but Joe just had to pout, and he would get thousands in pocket money—truly, only a crying child would get candies.

Arriving at the dorms, Finn was about to swipe his card to get in when he paused.

"Wait, where's my student ID?" he muttered as he searched himself. "Did I drop it at the hospital?!"

Oh, well. That was another twenty bucks for a replacement…

Still, even as he felt utterly terrible, he heard laughter nearby.

He turned to see a large group of boys, hovering around one who was wearing designer goods from head to toe.

Despite being of the same age, he looked like he had the wind in his sails, unlike his gloomy presence.

That was when Eli Holt—Joe's right-hand man—pointed at Finn and scoffed in disdain. "Isn't that brat the one who's trying to steal your girl Rain? Just look at how ugly he is! Does he ever look in the mirror?"

Naturally, Joe was their leader, and the gang was well aware that Joe had recently taken an interest in Rain instead of older women.

How would one put it… She was cute, but she wasn't the type Joe usually chased after.

"Heh." Joe snickered, his lips curling as his eyes flashed with resentment. "That loser will never have her, but she's at best just a passing fancy."

Finn felt a little angry right then.

He knew it. There was no way Joe would suddenly fall for Rain—Joe just wanted to screw with him!

Still, he had no right to intervene now…

That was when Joe walked to him, smacking his shoulder hard. "Heard you overworked and passed out. What, trying to win sympathy money out of the family?"

His tone was as hostile as he could as he continued, "As for me, I was out drinking and gaming, having the time of my life, but they were all begging me to come home. You really don't matter to them compared to me! Just wait. I’ll make sure you’re out of this family for good!"

Finn was quickly convinced that Ruby spoke a lot of sense and created an official Great Gate Instagram account. After parting ways with Ruby, he headed to the cafeteria. There were plenty of people there, and it wasn't easy to find an empty seat. However, he had barely started eating when a shrill voice rang behind him. "Hey, if it isn't Finn Lawson, the real son of the Lawsons!"The rowdy cafeteria abruptly turned silent as everyone turned toward the student who spoke out loud—even the ones waiting in line. However, the student continued with jealousy flashing in his eyes. "Just think about it. He couldn't find his parents for so long but suddenly found them… He must have seen how well off Joe was and wanted money!"The others sitting beside him quickly agreed. "That's right! How thick-skinned! How unseemly!""Kid has no principles. He's always demanding for more money—that's why the family resents him too!"Hearing that, the others began to clamor."Yeah. I heard the Lawso

Finn had been playing Great Gate ever since his team made it, and he even sent Yorick a link to the app.As it was not published yet, it was only available in offline mode.Yorick had stopped playing his favorite game since he smashed his mouse and was busy playing Great Gate since.Today, in philosophy class, in which everyone was left dozing off, he was playing it too."Tch!"He clicked his tongue as he lowered his phone, staring at the words 'Game Over' on the screen and scratching his head repeatedly, leaving his hair a mess."Your game's so hard!" he complained. "I can't even get past the second level!"And yet, he tapped on the replay button anyway, groaning as he did, "Ugh, I can do this! It's so addicting that I see it when I close my eyes!"Hearing him, Ruby Locke—the class princess—turned toward them as she was about to doze off from the class too."What game are you playing? Is it really that hard?" she asked, her face lighting up with interest. "Let me try it and s

Yvie was sulking as she returned home. The rest of the Lawsons had been waiting the whole night, and they quickly gathered in the living room when they saw her return.Seeing that look on Yvie's face, Vera promptly confirmed her own suspicions about Finn, and he had to bully Yvie on top of that! She promptly planted herself beside Yvie, putting an arm around her shoulder and rocking her. "Don't get so upset, sis!" she said, and then snarled through gritted teeth, "I knew Finn was a rotten apple all along. Now that you've caught him red-handed, he'll definitely do his worst to get back at us! How dare he try to slander me? I'll show him!""Wait, what?" Yvie blurted in surprise."Oh, Yvie," Joe chimed in just then, sitting on the armrest with a vague smile. "It was dangerous to talk to him alone. Who knows what he'll do…"Naturally, he wasn't at all worried like the rest of the family, and was absolutely pleased that they were going after Finn. With things carrying on like this,

Even so, Finn had always insisted on cooking for Yvie, and she suddenly wondered how long it had been since he cooked for her. That was when she remembered—after they made him sign that disownment agreement, and after which he never came home since.Yvie suddenly couldn't help but wonder if she was prejudiced against Finn the whole time, but that was when the food arrived. She ate after Finn had asked her to, and then thought about it before asking, "So Vera told me she bumped into you at Kite Tower, where you met a man called Malcolm Lock? What's that about?"Finn was eating too, and he paused. "So that's why you called me?"Yvie nodded, chagrined as she had never invited Finn anywhere like this before.Still, Finn shrugged and took out his phone, holding it in front of Yvie as he tapped on the Great Gate app. "This is a mobile game I'm investing in, and I'm discussing a viral marketing plan with Mr. Lock."As he pocketed his phone, he finished, "I guess you can call it a start

After finishing her work despite looking distracted, Vera quickly sent her staff away before rushing home.Zoe coincidentally finished work and got home as well, so Vera quickly stopped her and told her everything.Zoe frowned in turn. "Let's just calm down for now. We can discuss it with the rest of the family at dinner."Henry's bid for that major project was still ongoing since they managed to keep Joe's arrest under wraps. But if Finn were to publicize it, then Vera would lose her lead role, and Henry would lose his bid, while Zoe's own company might lose market value as well!-Once the sisters told the rest of the family during dinner, things tensed up immediately.Henry even slammed his fork on the table, his temple veins surfacing as he bellowed, "That rotten brat!"He could strangle Finn right then—was he so dead set on destroying their family? Was there even a sliver of that brat which measured up to Joe?!Ruth put down her fork too and patted Henry's arm to calm him

On top of that, it reinforced the public image that Vera was just a pretty face slash nepobaby, as her hopes to turn the tide of long-standing criticism against her fell flat.Instead, her reputation took a nosedive and her fanbase dwindled, with some diehard fans even becoming her worst detractors.Even as Finn wondered if he should tell Vera, she finished speaking with the press. After her staff escorted the press members away, she immediately spotted Finn standing nearby, her tactful smile immediately melting into disgust. Her tone was just as harsh as she snapped, "Finn! You're really persistent, aren't you? It's like there's just no getting rid of you! What is it now? Already using up all your money and you're now here to stalk me? How did you even find out where I am?!"I'm warning you—quit bothering me, and don't think you're getting anything from me!
