Chapter 1

Author: Hooray Seven
At the party celebrating the Luna's pregnancy, Nyla Ironcrest tripped me on purpose and ground her stiletto heels into my ankle with pinpoint accuracy.

I swore I could hear the sickening crack of my bones and couldn't help screaming.

"Ah!"

When Varkon Stormclaw heard the commotion and walked over, I looked up at him, hoping he would scoop me into his arms the way he used to.

Instead, he wrapped a protective arm around Nyla and glared at me with pure fury. "What madness is this now? Nyla is carrying a pup, and if anything happens to her, can you be held accountable for it?

"Did losing your wolf make you lose your basic humanity, too?"

His words cut deeper than any blade.

The witch once warned me that if my wolf didn't awaken within three full moons, I'd die.

The only way to wake it was through Varkon's constant, soothing pull through the mate bond. But no matter how many times I sought him out, he refused to see me.

On the night of the first full moon, he finally showed up, only to force me into the snow mountains, just because Nyla wanted a fire-fox pelt for her birthday.

When I was so cold that I lost all feeling in my limbs, he shot me an impatient look and said, "You're a descendant of the White Wolves, whose bodies are naturally strong. How could you be afraid of the cold?"

Heartbroken, I eventually collapsed in the snow from the freezing cold. Luckily, a passing wolf from the pack found me and saved me.

On the night of the second full moon, Nyla accused me of breaking her agate pendant.

She pointed at the shattered pieces on the ground and cried, "I know you hate me for taking Varkon away from you, but if you're upset, you can always take it out on me. This pendant was my mother's only keepsake!"

Varkon was livid. He ordered me to get on my knees and scrub the floor until it shone.

The shards cut into my knees, and blood ran down my legs as pain made me break out in cold sweat.

Varkon watched the entire thing without a hint of concern, while I ended up fainting from the blood loss.

Now, there were only three days left until the next full moon…

I sighed and took his hand. "I don't have much time left. The witch said—"

He shoved me away in revulsion. "Stop faking illness to get my attention. It only makes me want to stay farther away from you."

In a daze, I recalled our mating ceremony, the way he kissed my forehead and swore he'd never let me suffer the slightest again.

Was this really the same wolf?

After the party, I simmered Varkon's favorite venison soup and limped to his door. "You drank a lot tonight. Have some warm soup—it'll warm your stomach."

All he did was glance at me in disdain. "Do you really think a bowl of soup will make me forget the way you hurt me?"

He summoned the wolf guards and had me thrown out. As the heavy doors slammed in my face, my heart sank into a frozen void.

I returned to my shack and curled up on a straw mat, burning with a high fever.

From the castle, distant sounds of Varkon and Nyla's lovemaking drifted over. I covered my ears as memories of the past flooded my mind.

I remembered when the elders had cast me out of the Moon Goddess Church, I'd wandered for days before finding the chance to sneak back into the castle and see Varkon.

He was still lying in bed recovering.

The moment he saw me, he frowned tightly and snapped, "You ran off to meet another he-wolf while I was poisoned and unconscious, and now you have the nerve to come back?"

"Don't forget," Nyla rasped. "You were the one who handed her over to me. She begged you for help until her last breath, but you didn't even look her way."Her words drove into Vakron's heart like a blade. His grip loosened weakly, and Nyla collapsed to the ground in a fit of violent coughing. He knew she was right—he was the one who'd killed me, his fated mate, with his own hands. He collapsed to his knees and let out a hollow, agonizing wail. Then, as if struck by a sudden thought, he turned his bloodshot eyes to the Beta."Investigate the truth that happened after I was poisoned and fell unconscious back then."Soon, the Beta returned with the truth, and when Vakron heard, it shattered whatever was left of him.It turned out that the witch had been telling the truth all along. I'd been dying. Every time I'd tried to come close to him, and every plea I'd made had simply been an attempt to stay alive. He had had plenty of chances to save me, but he'd watched as my life drain

On the altar, Varkon suddenly snapped his eyes open and let out an anguished howl. The wolves around him jolted awake in fright. Then, as though Varkon had lost his mind, he ran toward the morgue behind the castle. When he saw the rotting corpse on the stone slab again, his legs gave out, and he dropped heavily to his knees. The wounds on the corpse pierced his eyes like needles. The bones in its foot were cracked, and its back was split open with whip marks deep enough to expose the bone.Large patches of rotted flesh covered the corpse as clear signs of burn from wolfsbane and silver. A flicker of sympathy flashed in the eyes of the Beta beside him as he quietly murmured, "Alpha Vakron, she… was tortured to death."Vakron snapped his head up, and his eyes were blood-red. "It must've been the lover she ran away with! That Rogue killed her!"Investigate and find him! I want him torn to pieces!"The Beta sighed and stepped back to carry out the order. In less than half a day,

My corpse was so badly decomposed that it was impossible to be identified by scent. The guard pointed to the fabric on the corpse and said, "Alpha Vakron, she looks like… Arinelle."Varkon froze for a second before his eyes flared with a deep revulsion. "No way! Why would she be dead?"She must've found a corpse, dressed it in her rags, and staged this whole scene to fool me so that she could run away with her lover!"Standing nearby, Nyla went pale when she saw the corpse. He assumed she was frightened and pulled her into his arms. "Don't be afraid, Nyla. I'm right here."Then, he whipped his head back toward the guard. "What did Arinelle promise you to help her stage this little act and lie to me?"The guard immediately dropped to his knees and knocked his head against the floor. "I'd never dare lie to you, Alpha Varkon!"He kicked him aside and roared, "Even if that's her corpse, I won't shed a single tear for a shameless she-wolf like her!"Soon after, Mother heard the ne

All Varkon found was an empty silver cage, as Nyla had arranged for the guards to move my body.Soon, the night of the full moon passed.Varkon and the rest of the pack shifted back into human form. When Nyla saw him frowning, she quickly stepped forward and said, "I only had Arinelle locked in the cage, but when I checked again, she was gone."I bet the Rogues that caused trouble earlier came to take her away. She's probably run off with some he-wolf by now."The panic in Varkon's eyes turned into seething rage. He slammed his fist into the wall and yelled, "Shameless slut! She pretended to be sick to lie to me, and here I was, worried she might be suffering in the dungeon. It turns out she planned this all along…"Before he could finish, he coughed up a mouthful of blood. His vision went dark, and he collapsed heavily onto the ground. The witch rushed over to treat him and diagnosed him with a soul-rending grief of the heart.Even while he lay unconscious, his forehead was

Nyla walked straight to my bedside and looked down at me. "Stop waiting. Varkon's busy preparing a blessing ceremony for my pup."You don't even have a wolf anymore, so what makes you think you're worthy of his love? Even if you die right in front of him this very second, he won't spare you a glance."My heart plummeted into a hollow silence. The blessing ceremony began shortly after. Despite my frailty, Nyla had the guards drag me out into the biting winds of the plaza.Varkon noticed and immediately waved for me to return to rest, but Nyla clung to his arm and swung it. "It's a day for the whole pack to pray for our pup. Let her stay and share in the blessing."Varkon nodded and shot me a cold look. "Nyla's always thinking of you, yet you're always trying to hurt her!"She noticed my lips turning pale from the cold and leaned close to whisper, "Varkon used to say your Eclipse Dance was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen, but what does that matter now?"He won't even tou

My back slammed into the corner of the table, and I sucked in a sharp breath from the pain.Varkon seemed to soften a little. A flicker of concern crossed his eyes as he reached out to me. "Are you alright? Let me see."I bit my lip and stepped back. His hand froze midair, and his expression darkened in turmoil. When Nyla noticed, her eyes reddened, and she immediately said, "She won't even let you touch her, Varkon. I suppose her heart's still miles away with some other he-wolf, isn't it?"Her words seemed to strike a nerve, and he had the guards force my head into a nearby barrel of water. As I thrashed, the icy water rushed into my nose and throat.Through the haze, a memory from years ago surfaced. Varkon carried me on his back by a stream. He cupped the water in his hands, gently fed it to me, and whispered that he'd guard me for all of eternity. My violent coughing dragged me back to reality. I couldn't tell if the wetness on my face was the water or my tears.Varkon h
