Chapter 9

Author: Windie
Alarm bells went off in Wendy's head.

“Grace Jones! What are you planning to do?!”

“What am I planning?”

Grace burst into crazed laughter.

“I'm going to give you a little present, of course!”

With that, she actually rushed into the chapel and swept the Foster family memorial plaques off their shelves, sending them crashing to the floor.

Then she pulled out a lighter she'd prepared in advance and set fire to the hanging curtains.

The dry fabric caught instantly.

Flames spread rapidly through the chapel.

“Have you lost your mind?!”

Wendy tried to rush inside and stop her, but the thick smoke sent her into a fit of coughing.

Grace watched her struggle, a twisted smile of satisfaction spreading across her face.

Then, catching Wendy off guard, she grabbed a heavy incense burner nearby and slammed it against the back of her head.

Wendy's vision went black.

She lost consciousness instantly.

When Wendy woke again, she found herself kneeling beside Grace on the cold floor of the Foster family's main hall.

Both their hands were tied behind their backs.

Mrs. Foster Sr. sat at the head of the room, her face livid with rage.

“Tell me! Who burned down the chapel?!”

Grace immediately burst into tears and pointed at Wendy.

“She did it! Mom, it was Wendy! I saw her with my own eyes! She was angry about you pressuring her to have a baby, and she hates Felix, so she set the chapel on fire!”

Wendy looked at Grace's convincing performance, utterly disgusted.

She raised her head.

Her voice was hoarse from inhaling smoke, but remarkably calm.

“I'm not going to argue about this. There are security cameras in the chapel.”

Mrs. Foster Sr. immediately turned to the butler.

“Go! Get the security footage! I want to see who had the nerve to do this!”

The moment Grace heard about the cameras, all the color drained from her face.

She glanced frantically at Felix, silently begging him to help her.

Felix caught her look.

After a moment of silence, he suddenly stepped forward and stopped the butler before he could leave.

“There's no need.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Felix looked calmly at Mrs. Foster Sr., speaking with absolute certainty.

“I was passing by the chapel earlier. I saw the whole thing. Wendy was the one who started the fire.”

Wendy jerked her head up, staring at him in disbelief.

She'd thought that with actual evidence available, he would at least be fair to her this once.

But instead, he was openly protecting Grace in front of everyone.

He was willing to pin something as serious as arson on his own wife!

“Felix Foster...”

Her voice trembled.

“Say that again.”

Felix lowered his eyes, avoiding her gaze.

His voice remained perfectly steady, but every word cut through the last of Wendy's defenses.

“I said I saw you set fire to the chapel with my own eyes.”

“You ungrateful little monster!”

Mrs. Foster Sr. erupted in fury, pointing a trembling finger at Wendy.

“Wendy Walker! You've gone completely out of control! Today you burn down the family chapel. What's next? Are you going to start killing people?!”

She turned toward the servants.

“Drag her outside! Tie her up in the courtyard and make her kneel for an entire day and night! No one is to release her without my permission! Let's see if she still dares to behave like this!”

Wendy was roughly dragged into the courtyard and tied to a cold stone pillar.

The bitter early-winter wind cut through her thin clothes.

The wounds on her back, arms, and legs had barely healed. Now, with the ropes digging into her flesh and the cold seeping into her body, they began to ache with tearing pain all over again.

Through the brightly lit windows of the main hall, she could see Felix gently comforting Grace, who was supposedly still shaken by the incident.

He spoke to her so carefully, so tenderly.

Meanwhile, Wendy had been discarded like something worthless.

Treated like a criminal.

Forced to endure a punishment for something she hadn't done.

Little by little, the cold and excruciating pain began to overwhelm her.

Her consciousness faded.

Finally, everything went black.

She passed out again.

When Wendy next opened her eyes, she was back in the hospital.

Felix was sitting beside her bed.

“I hope you've finally learned your lesson this time. From now on, behave yourself and stop upsetting my mother.”
