Ethan's Pov

"Where is Amelia?" I asked the intern working at the front desk.

“Sir. She has just gone out to the balcony with Mr. Jared.”

The words disturbed me, making me feel restless inside. I clutched the wheelchair's armrest tightly. What on earth was she doing with Jared?

I rushed along the corridor, the metallic sound of my steps echoing against the gleaming marble floor. I reached the balcony doorway and hid from view behind the folds of the curtain.

There they stood.

Jared hovered uncomfortably near her, and Amelia's arms were folded and crossed tightly over her chest like they protected her from something. Their words floated through the doorway, indistinctly heard—hushed but full of emotion.

"I will not go through this again," Amelia asserted firmly.

You never even gave us a chance.” Jared's fingers stroked along her arm. "You may not be willing to admit it, but you feel it."

She backed away. "You're delusional."

"I might take care of you better than him," he said. "He's br

Amelia's POVI hadn't slept at all.Ethan sat at the end of the couch, elbows on his knees, face curled into his hands. Standing in my position across the room, I watched him, chewing at the inside of my cheek until the metallic hint of blood arose."Again, if you please," he said, his voice gruff. "Tell me why you want us to reject Veronica's offer. Don't you think it's the only choice we have now? I mean, I don't trust the woman, but she could get prove useful.”"Because we're not trading one monster in for another," I replied, my voice clipped. I didn't like Veronica and I didn't trust her. "Even with all her help, she'll bleed this company dry until we have nothing. We would have no power to fight against her."He did not argue, but I could feel the urge seething underneath. I could see it in the faint twitch of his jawline and the agitated clench of his fingers.I walked over to him and kneeled alongside him, wrapping my hand gently around his."We need not only strength, but an

Amelia’s POVMy heart pounded in my chest, even as the video vanished from the screen and Ethan hurled the phone across the room. It crashed into the wall with a sharp crack, the shards bursting everywhere."Dammit!" he shouted, putting a shaking hand through his hair.I hugged myself, attempting to regulate my breathing, but my mother's face kept flashing before my gaze—gagged, bound, helpless."I'm calling security," Ethan declared, already reaching for the landline and punching numbers into it. "We need all the surveillance tapes reviewed. Find out where this video originated. Trace the IP. Get all available recent footage from the warehouses—""Ethan,"I gently touched his arm.He turned to confront me. His jaw was clenched so tightly that I thought he would shatter it. His eyes blazed with cold anger, which I had not seen there before."He warned me," I whispered. "He threatened that if I spoke, that if I informed you about it."“This is not your fault,” he declared immediately, i

Amelia's Pov You're doing it again, I whispered, dropping to the floor beside Ethan's wheelchair."What's that?" His tone was slicing, verging on snappish.I tried to keep calm. "Pulling away. Shutting me out."He snorted and spun around, his fists clenched around the wheels. "You're dreaming.""No, I'm not." I stood, crossing my arms. "You've spoken barely two full sentences to me since last night."His jaw set, his gaze as unyielding as stone. "If you're here to psychoanalyze me, Amelia, you may leave."His words hurt. He'd never spoken to me like that in weeks. Not since he'd begun to trust me. Not since we'd confessed to one another about how much we loved each other."I'm not your enemy, Ethan."Then stop acting like my messiah. The air grew warmer between us. I leaned in closer, holding onto the armrest of his wheelchair. "What's wrong with you?"He lifted his eyes to encounter mine. There was frustration there, as well, and something else—pain, confusion… fear, even?"No, the

Ethan's POVIt started with a glance, which was a little longer than usual. Jared was always suave and cool, even charming when necessary—but I saw it. The way he couldn't stop staring at Amelia when he didn't think anyone was paying attention. And I was paying attention. It angered me that his throat would bob up and down like a thirty man being denied water whenever she entered the room. I knew Amelia was not the kind of woman who would pay him any attention…Or was she?It would have been simple to dismiss it as paranoia—God knows I'd had a fair share of that creeping into my chest of late—but something was different now. Something wasn't right. Particularly after the account. She was already showered when I saw her the morning after we returned home from the villa. I wasn't even out of bed when her face was strained as she pulled out the photocopied sheets."I found this in the corporate digital records," she'd whispered, pushing the folder along the table. "It isn't an easy thing

Amelia's POV"You didn't have to blindfold me," I laughed, tugging at the silk around my eyes as Ethan wheeled himself and helped me out of the car."You would have peeked," he said with that boyish grin I had come to love. "Just a few more steps.""You mean rolls?" I teased. He chuckled. "You're terrible. Alright, you can look now.”He took away the blindfold, and I stood with my mouth wide open. The villa materialized like something out of a dream, set in between great cliffs and overlooking an undiscovered beach. There, regal palm trees swayed gracefully in the wind, as the sun warmed the marble of the courtyard. It was nothing short of stunning—peaceful, secluded.“You brought me here?”"I yearned for us to get away from everything and go where the rest of the world could not find us," he told her. "Even for an instant."I bent and softly pressed my lips to his. "You did well."A warm mist surrounded the pool that night, steam curling elegantly upwards through the amber luminescen

Ethan's POVJared returned just as the sun set below my estate’s gate.He also seemed refreshed as well, too refreshed for someone who'd been sent over to seal off one of our largest foreign transactions. As soon as he stood in front of my office, I could sense the sting of betrayal seeping just below the surface. He wasn't pulling the wool over our eyes with his sly alibis and evasive maneuvers. No way."You have been away for days, Jared," I answered frostily, whirling around from my desk to glare at him. "And your name still comes up where it shouldn't."He raised an eyebrow, tugging on the sleeves of his designer jacket. "Ethan, I just arrived from a 14-hour flight. If this is regarding the Taiwan deal—"“It is about Ryan.”His eyes finally shifted. Flash of fear, of surprise, of guilt, then the mask returned over his features. "Still harping on about that? We have already spoken of everything."“Did we? Because somebody sent me an anonymous USB with footage of the fight between y

Amelia's Pov I rose to the sweet, earthy scent of coffee wafting down the corridor, a warm embrace enfolding me. I let myself linger in bed for an instant, enjoying the stillness as the aroma crept onto my lips in the form of a soft smile. It was calming, comforting—one of life's small pleasures I used to take for granted in my old life, but now presented to me, it felt so indulgent.I fell out of bed and stumbled into the kitchen, still wiping the slumber from my eyes. The sun streamed through the windows, lighting the room in warm, glowing light, and there at the counter sat Ethan. His wheelchair was positioned in front of him with perfect precision, a tray on his lap, and a mischievous crinkle at the corner of his mouth.“Good morning,” he whispered, his voice soft and low. “I made breakfast.”I stared in disbelief. "You didn't."He gestured proudly at the tray. "Scrambled eggs, toast, and a bit of bacon that may be a bit overcooked. Don't examine it too closely, please; I had to

(Amelia, First Person, Past Tense)The house felt heavier without him.His silence bore down on me like heavy mist that clung to my chest as I went by his empty room.I was awake. Not quite. I'd spent the day at the hospital after the surgery, but the physicians had released me to rest while he recovered. Rest—a harsh word.I sat in front of my vanity, brushing my hair with slow, rhythmic strokes, looking at my reflection but not seeing it. My thoughts wandered repeatedly to Ethan, who lay in that sterile hospital bed, as white as a ghost, lips parched, hand bound tightly where Veronica had cut him.He had rescued me. With his body. And before he lost consciousness, he told me that he loved me. That he didn't need a contract anymore. That he needed me.I should have agreed.I should've yelled it.But I had frozen. And now I had no idea what that silence cost.I sighed, pinning on the brush when some aspect induced hairs on my neck to bristle.A shadow. Movement. I turned to face the d
