Chapter 2

Penulis: Hyacinth
After Caden ended the link, Noah sent one message after another.

"Caden is handling an emergency, and you are still wasting his time because you cannot stand Lydia receiving one day of attention," Noah wrote. "Every woman near him becomes a rival in your head. Stop turning your jealousy into the pack's problem!"

I stared at his words until the screen blurred. Just moments ago, I had so much to say. Now, I was suddenly at a loss for words.

When the ceremony ended, Lydia rested against Caden and smiled at my parents and Noah.

"Tonight has been the happiest night of my life. Please don't be angry with Evelyn because of me."

The guests escorted her to the Alpha residence. My mother had already ordered my belongings moved to the old Hart house. Through the family mind-link, she explained that Lydia needed Caden's personal care, so she would stay in the room that had been prepared for Caden and me.

I returned to the staff quarters at Westvale and locked the pregnancy report I had never delivered inside my case file. Before dawn, the head of Pack Security woke me with an urgent summons.

The protective barrier surrounding Moon Hall had collapsed and injured several pack members. As the investigator assigned to that district, I had to return immediately.

He ordered me to establish the cause before the end of the day. If unauthorized construction had compromised the barrier, every approval document had to be submitted to the Moon Council unchanged.

That was the wonderful thing about a large pack. My mate could perform a ceremony with another she-wolf right in front of me, and I'd still be expected to drag myself to work.

Because the collapse triggered a security audit, the Moon Council released the ceremony's sealed record to my case file. In the image, Caden's hand covered Lydia's, matching rings gleaming on their fingers, while my parents and Noah stood behind them.

The old scar across Caden's hand was clearly visible. He had received it at eighteen when he shielded me from a silver blade.

The same blade cut my shoulder, and he spent the next two nights beside my bed, waking whenever I moved. For years, I had treated that scar as proof that he would never abandon me.

I closed the image, organized the previous night's patrol reports, and requested the construction records from the Moon Council. When I returned to the site, several moonstones that sustained the barrier had been removed. A new ceremonial lane ran directly across their foundations, and Caden's signature appeared on the authorization.

They had dismantled the support points three days earlier so Lydia's Luna coach could reach the hall. No additional guards had been assigned.

My parents arrived with Lydia while I documented the damage. Father ordered me to omit Caden's authorization from the Council report; Mother warned that another scandal could kill Lydia. When I refused, Noah seized my shoulder.

"You followed them to an accident scene just to find out whether they spent the night together? Stop chasing Caden and forcing everyone else to clean up your mess."

I calmly pushed his hand away and held my Security badge in front of him.

"I'm investigating the barrier collapse. Keep obstructing me, and your interference goes into the report."

Noah snatched the construction order from my hand. Even after he saw Caden's signature, he refused to move. Removing a few moonstones was harmless, he insisted. Everyone inside Moon Hall had escaped safely, and pursuing the matter would only distress Lydia further.

I took the document back and recorded his name in front of the patrol officers.

His expression changed, but he continued to block my path. When rogues attacked our training camp at thirteen, I had dragged his injured body through the fence and taken the wolfsbane meant for him. Lydia sat beside his bed for one night after he woke, and Noah decided she had been the one who saved him.

I stopped trying to explain. Instead, I removed the family-link token from my wrist and placed it in his hand.

"If Lydia is the only sister you recognize, then be her brother from now on."

Caden emerged from the damaged hall with one arm supporting Lydia. He paused when he saw me and glanced at the token I had removed. Then he said the border emergency and Lydia's condition had made him lose track of my birthday. Once the damage was handled, he would celebrate with me another night.

"Evelyn must have misunderstood," Lydia said, tightening her hand around his and turning the matching ring toward me. "Caden has enough to carry without accounting for every hour he spends helping me. You are lucky he is so patient."

Her fingers remained threaded through his, and my Luna mantle still covered her shoulders when I looked away.

"Forget it."

Three months later, I was inspecting Frost River's new northern barrier. Each section now rested on independent moonstone supports, allowing the remaining structure to hold if one failed. After the investigation team completed its final impact test, I signed the approval file and found a death notice from Blackridge waiting on my Council terminal: Caden had died in the pack infirmary the previous night.Once the silver poison reached his heart, his wolf weakened quickly. During his final two days, he could no longer maintain human form. At his request, Blackridge's healers sent no further contact applications to Frost River and notified the Moon Council only after his death.Back in my office, I opened the full file. Caden had left a public confession accepting responsibility for the secret Luna ceremony, the concealed removal of Moon Hall's support stones, and his attempt to stop my investigation, without using Lydia's deception to excuse his choices. He admitted using his Alpha autho

Three years later, I stood in the Moon Council's northern assembly hall to receive its highest commendation for cross-pack security work. The rogue network behind the moonstone-smuggling case had been dismantled, twelve illegal border routes had been sealed, and the pack officials involved were awaiting judgment. When the ceremony ended, my three-and-a-half-year-old daughter ran from the Frost River delegation and touched the medal pinned to my uniform. She could already control her young wolf, although excitement still brought two soft ears through her hair."Can it stay beside my bed tonight?"I promised she could hold it after we returned home, then sent her back to Frost River with our healer. Only after they left did a Council officer hand me a contact request.Caden had completed his three-year sentence that morning. He had not applied to enter Frost River or approach my daughter. He requested five supervised minutes with me at the neutral Council station on the border.I signed

The first evidence I submitted was Caden's authorization to remove Moon Hall's support stones.A Council Security officer projected the hall's structural plan before the tribunal and marked the four missing supports. Blackridge law required three inspections and a guarded backup barrier before any alteration. Caden approved the request eleven minutes after receiving it. His stated reason was to widen the route for the Luna ceremony.Patrol records showed no eastern-border emergency that night. Caden had used his Alpha authority to conceal the ceremony and stationed guards outside to keep me and other uninvited wolves away, leaving no one to inspect the weakened barrier."Did you sign these authorizations?" the judge asked."Yes.""Did the request mention structural risk?""It did," Caden said. "I believed one night would be safe."The judge asked what he had done after the first collapse, when I showed him the construction order. Caden looked toward me before answering."I ordered her

One year later, I led the Frost River investigation team in sealing the last moonstone-smuggling passage along the northern border. The seized ledgers exposed three transport convoys working with rogue wolves, and the Council suspended their travel rights after reviewing my evidence. When I returned to headquarters, the plaque outside my office still read: Evelyn Hart, Chief Investigator of Frost River Pack.My six-month-old daughter was asleep in the nursery next door, one hand curled around the healer's sleeve. As I took her, an envelope bearing the Moon Council seal arrived on my desk.Blackridge's case was entering its final hearing. The Council needed me to confirm my mate-contract dissolution, pack withdrawal, and bloodline severance in person, then state whether I sought compensation for Lydia's fraudulent Luna claim. The notice guaranteed that my daughter would remain inside Frost River's protected territory while I attended.I left her with the healer and carried only my case

Caden POVWhen the Moon Council barrier severed the mate-link, Caden's fingers crushed the pregnancy report into a ridge of creases. He called Evelyn three times, but the sealed wall returned every summons. The Council envoy gathered the dissolution papers and told him that Evelyn had completed her mate-contract dissolution, pack withdrawal, and bloodline severance before crossing the northern border. An emergency protection order now barred Blackridge from tracking her or the unborn pup until the final hearing. The examination date matched Lydia's secret Luna ceremony. Evelyn had been standing outside Moon Hall with this report while Caden accused her of checking his movements and warned her not to let her insecurity destroy them.Lydia stepped away from the altar and reached for his arm. "She only wants you to chase her. Once she calms down, she'll bring the pup home." Caden moved beyond her reach, his gaze settling on the ring he had placed on her finger the night before.Measured f

Before I could answer, Lydia laughed softly beside him."Evelyn loves you too much to leave. She only wants you to pay more attention to her. Once you go home and hold her, she'll withdraw the application."Caden accepted her explanation, and his voice hardened."Threatening to leave the pack only disappoints me. Keep this up, and tomorrow's mating ceremony is canceled for good. Blackridge is where you were born. Without your family or me, where would you even go?""All right. Cancel it."He had been waiting for an apology. My agreement left him silent instead. Lydia began coughing again, and he only managed to say that he would contact me later before ending the link.I submitted the dissolution of my mate contract, my application to leave the pack, and a declaration severing my blood ties to the Moon Council. I also accepted the chief investigator position that had opened in Frost River Pack. They had first invited me three years earlier, but I had stayed for Caden and my family. The
