Chapter 3

Autor: Perfect Timing
I returned his smile, feeling a wave of relief inside.

As expected, trusting my husband had been the right choice.

This time, he hadn't been demoted. We should be able to live peacefully together. As long as we didn't divorce, he would never end up with someone else.

So when I found a package addressed to May in the mailbox the next day, the baby's voice immediately chimed in again.

[Mommy, this is proof that Dad and Aunt May are cheating on you! Look!]

Without the slightest hesitation, I handed the package directly to May.

I thought I had successfully avoided another disaster, but just as I stepped outside for a walk, her room exploded with a deafening blast!

I fell to the ground, staring blankly as the house was swallowed by flames.

Where did a bomb come from? Nothing even remotely similar to this happened in my past life!

Ben rushed back as soon as he heard the news, and when I instinctively reached out, hoping for comfort, he pushed me away.

"Lucy, as the family of a military man, don't you know that unidentified packages must be sent to the bomb disposal unit for inspection?

"After Jerry got in that accident, I swore to take care of May, but now she's dead! How am I supposed to face him in the afterlife?"

The tough man in front of me was filled with sorrow, and his gaze was beyond disappointed. "Let's get divorced, Lucy."

The words made my entire body tremble.

Why? I trusted my husband fully this time, and didn't do anything to ruin his career either, yet I was still about to be divorced!

Where had that bomb even come from?

There had never been such a thing in my previous life!

Panic clawed at my chest as I teetered on the verge of collapse.

Then the young voice echoed in my mind, "Mom, don't argue with Dad! He's angry now, so if you refuse the divorce, you're only going to push him away!"

In my previous life, after divorcing Ben because of my mistakes, those lecherous thugs who had been eyeing me no longer had any restraint.

That was what eventually led to my death.

This time, I would never let that happen.

I looked Ben straight in the eye. "No, I don't agree to a divorce!"

"Don't be like this, Mom! Dad's going to be angry!"

Ignoring the incessant voice, I took his hand and softened my tone, "I know you blame yourself, Ben, but a divorce won't bring the dead back to life. Give me a chance to brave this storm with you, please?

"We have an unborn baby, too! Don't you want us to raise our baby together?"

Ben's tightly knit brows softened slowly.

As though finally calming down, he pulled me into his arms. "Sorry, Lucy. I was just grieving… You're right. The dead won't come back to life, and the living should continue to live well…"

After that day, he never mentioned divorce again.

Had I really changed that tragic fate?

The realization filled my eyes with tears of joy.

To make up for my mistake that had led to May's death, I devoted myself to caring for Ben and managing our household, well and proper.

Meanwhile, our child continued growing safely inside me.

Just when everything seemed to be steadily moving towards a good direction, an unexpected crisis struck!

While carrying an injured woman down a mountain during a mission, Ben was maliciously accused of harassing her and reported to military authorities!

When he told me about it, his face was full of guilt.

"Their family couldn't endure the rumors, and they're kicking up a fuss at the military compound for an explanation. The higher-ups gave me two options: be suspended indefinitely…"

I didn't even consider the first option. "What about the second?"

His expression darkened as he revealed the solution: "I would have a fake divorce and get married to her."

I froze.

After all that… we were still getting divorced?

"I'll use your identity to sell information to the enemy! When that happens, I'll have it all, while you take the fall!""You heartless scum. That uniform is disgraced just by being worn by someone like you!"Ben's voice grew weaker and weaker, but the other man continued laughing. "I'm not a soldier anyway, so what does that matter? All I need to do is sell a teeny, tiny secret, and I get to profit!"I have you to thank for it, so I'll use your face and live a good life, don't worry!"With those vicious words, the spy dealt the final blow.Ben's voice was filled with pain, but even in his final moments, he remembered to activate the recorder. He believed that one day I would discover the truth, clear his name, and allow him to rest in peace.I fought back my tears and let the recording play to the end.The recording stopped, and silence filled the room. Then someone from the military reacted quickly and pointed at the man posing as Ben."He's a spy! Get him!"And so, the wedd

Hidden inside the pocket watch was something of great importance to the military, but my parents never told me what exactly was inside."Lucy, what's inside may cause you harm. It's better that you don't know."When my father handed the pocket watch to me, he also pulled Ben aside. "But I have to tell you what's inside, Ben, because you're a military man. Only then will you know its importance, and will be able to protect it and my darling daughter.""I will, Father!" Ben accepted the pocket watch with both hands, standing straight as a rod.Yet, in the present, the very same man who swore to protect me wanted me dead."Since you know what it is, hand it over. If you do, I'll still let you leave. Otherwise, you'll be sorry for what happens next!" He glared at me as he demanded I hand him the pocket watch."What if I don't?" I gripped the pocket watch tightly in my hands."Then I'll report you for attempting to steal military secrets! We're at the military compound, so there's no

"You used my guilt to make me believe that my brother died in such a horrible way because of me. "You comforted me at exactly the correct timing, using it as a chance to conveniently bring May into our home without inviting any suspicion."Finally, with May's help, you orchestrated that whole act of her dying to erase her existence itself from the world, before disguising her as an innocent woman you saved during a mission!""How much longer are you going to spout all that nonsense? It's about time to end this farce!" Ben shouted, cutting me off. "I'm in the middle of getting married, so stop acting crazy! Can't we part ways peacefully?"Come on, someone remove this madwoman from here immediately! She's already caused enough of a disruption to our ceremony today!"And so, I was kicked out.At that moment, the voice rang in my head again:"I can't bear to see you being humiliated like this, Mom! If you don't want to live, let's die together…"Why did the ending not change in th

The guests craned their necks to get a better look, and while the woman instinctively raised a hand to cover her neck, it was already too late. Everyone had seen it.Realizing the truth could no longer be hidden, she dropped the act altogether and glared at me viciously. "Yeah, I'm May! So what?!""What's going on here?" The guests were all shocked.May pointed at me and accused, "A month ago, after all the chaos, you were heartlessly afraid of getting caught up in Ben's troubles, so you abandoned him!"You deserted your husband and child. What was I supposed to do? If I hadn't stepped in, how was he supposed to explain showing up alone at today's wedding?""Oh, so that's what happened!" The guests under the stage exclaimed. In response to her baseless accusations, I laughed out of anger. "You worked together with my husband to make me believe that you were dead and changed your appearance to look like someone else. I was wondering why I had to wait for a month, and it was so tha

From the stage, Ben spotted me from afar, his eyes filled with disgust. "Why are you here? I'm marrying my wife today, so can a woman like you, who abandoned me, not cause trouble?"He branded me as a completely unrelated stranger that's crashing his wedding, but I knew that the real impostor was standing right next to him!"Aren't you leaving? The military compound isn't just some place you can barge in with abandon! If you don't leave, I'll have the right to use violence, so leave!" He ordered impatiently."Let's go, Mom. It sucks being treated like this by Dad, and I can't even take seeing it anymore! Let's go, you two don't have a future together!"I was reactionless, only standing there unmoving in the middle of the hall.Seeing this, Ben ordered the people next to him to throw me stacks of cash from the pile of wedding gifts on the table."You want money, right? Well, I've seen people like you in spades, so take this money and get out!"I looked at the pile of cash on the

The horrific memories of my previous life came flooding back, making my body tremble uncontrollably.Ben pulled me into his arms and apologized over and over again. "I'm sorry Lucy, but this is the only way! I only need one month, I promise. Once I compensate her enough, we'll get remarried immediately!"Looking into his earnest eyes, the anxiety in my heart gradually eased. That's right. This time, I wasn't being thrown out for what I did wrong, but doing something to save him instead. He wouldn't abandon me…For the sake of Ben's future, we finalized our divorce. To reassure me, he even told everyone around him that it was only a temporary arrangement, and that it was a fake divorce.Just as he had predicted, the woman's family gradually stopped causing trouble. The last of my doubts finally disappeared.Stewing in my anxieties, I finally waited until the day we planned to remarry.
