Chapter 4

The horrific memories of my previous life came flooding back, making my body tremble uncontrollably.

Ben pulled me into his arms and apologized over and over again. "I'm sorry Lucy, but this is the only way! I only need one month, I promise. Once I compensate her enough, we'll get remarried immediately!"

Looking into his earnest eyes, the anxiety in my heart gradually eased.

That's right. This time, I wasn't being thrown out for what I did wrong, but doing something to save him instead. He wouldn't abandon me…

For the sake of Ben's future, we finalized our divorce.

To reassure me, he even told everyone around him that it was only a temporary arrangement, and that it was a fake divorce.

Just as he had predicted, the woman's family gradually stopped causing trouble.

The last of my doubts finally disappeared.

Stewing in my anxieties, I finally waited until the day we planned to remarry. Yet, after waiting until the sun went down, Ben never appeared!

My nails dug into my palms as the familiar voice echoed once more in my mind, confirming my worst fears.

"Dad's fallen for the woman he got in a fake marriage with, and now they're tying the knot for real. It's happily ever after for them, and I told you so for you!"

Ben had fallen for another woman?

But why? This woman wasn't even the woman he married in his past life!

My mind went blank, my thoughts in disarray. However, I only had one fervent thought that broke through the fog: I wanted to confront him!

The voice suddenly became frantic, "Mom, you should have more pride and leave together with me! If you cause a scene like a loser, I'll be so disappointed!"

I jumped onto my bicycle and raced toward the military compound.

Just as I caught sight of the wedding venue, a hand shot out from the darkness and dragged me into an alley.

"We've been watching you for a long time, you little witch. Finally got you alone!"

"We've been waiting for ages, and now we're going to have our fill!"

Several thugs pinned me against the wall. As their hands reached for my pants and I saw their lecherous faces clearly, my blood turned cold.

It was the very same gang of criminals who had caused my death in my previous life!

Why?

I had changed so much after being reborn, but why did my husband still fall for someone else and leave me instead?

Why was I still being targeted by these men?

As I felt a hand sliding down my waist, that revolting, slimy feeling disintegrated any rational thought I had left.

In one swift motion, I pulled out the dagger I had hidden on my body and drove it into his groin.

A bloodcurdling scream erupted from his throat.

Taking advantage of the chaos, I shoved him aside and bolted from the alley, shouting for help and attracting the attention of the people nearby.

Then, using the commotion as cover, I rushed straight into the military compound where the wedding was being held!

Inside, Ben was raising a toast, and when I saw the face of the woman clinging to his arm, everything finally clicked.

I finally understood the truth behind the voice I heard, and why, no matter how desperately I struggled, I could never escape the fate of being abandoned and ruined!

Finally, I understood everything.
