Chapter 2

作者: Lolly
I pressed a hand over my mouth and forced the lump in my throat back down.

Chris came back a few minutes later. Snow clung to his shoulders, frost crusted his lashes, and he crouched in front of me, cupping my face in both hands.

"Kate, it's too windy out there. We might have to wait a bit longer."

The gesture looked tender. It felt cold-blooded. My stomach turned.

I looked away from him. "Is that right? Did you see the rescue team out there?"

Something flickered in his eyes before he smiled. "Visibility's too low. I couldn't see a thing. But don't worry. The second that helicopter shows up, I'll get you out first."

A dull cracking sound rolled out from deeper in the cave. Chris's expression shifted, and he immediately crossed to Angelina's side, pulling her farther from the entrance — completely forgetting he'd just promised to get me out first.

I watched his back with a cold, distant feeling, then quietly switched on the miniature geological scanner strapped to my wrist. Its red indicator light blinked faintly as it began mapping a backup escape route.

[Yes! That's the scanner!]

[The underground river route is deeper in the cave. Don't run for the entrance!]

[Kate's finally using her brain. Let's go!]

The temperature dropped to twenty-two below zero. Chris opened his personal emergency pack and dug an extreme-cold-weather parka out from the very bottom — the spare gear I'd had custom-made just last month. Without a second's hesitation, he draped it over Angelina's shoulders.

Angelina was still holding the lighter I'd given Chris, clicking it on and off, a thin blue flame flickering with each press. The light caught the faint, satisfied curl of her lips.

I walked over. "Chris, that parka is my size."

His hands stilled on Angelina's buttons. He turned to look at me, impatience creeping into his voice.

"Kate, don't start throwing a tantrum right now. Angelina's new — she's got a weak constitution and mild asthma. She can't handle the cold. You've spent years out in the field. Your cold tolerance is way better than hers."

The comments scrolled past.

[Good cold tolerance doesn't mean she can't die!]

[Watch Angelina — she's about to fake being sick any second.]

My voice came out edged with frost. "Good cold tolerance doesn't mean I won't die out here. My hypothermia symptoms have already started. Give the parka back."

Angelina shrank back, shoulders hunching, eyes brimming with tears.

"Mrs. Hanks, I'm sorry — I didn't know it was yours. Here, take it back. I'll be fine, it's not a big deal if I have a flare-up—"

She didn't even finish the sentence before a violent coughing fit doubled her over, and she collapsed into Chris's arms.

He caught her at once, then rounded on me. "Kate, are you determined to see her dead? Once we're back, I'll have ten of the best parkas made just for you. You're usually the one telling everyone to think about the bigger picture — why are you being so heartless today?"

Todd mumbled under his breath, "Yeah, Mrs. Hanks, Angelina's coughing like that and you're still fighting over a coat?"

I looked at the two of them, standing shoulder to shoulder against me, and found the whole scene almost funny. In their logic, stripping me of the gear that kept me alive was simply me being reasonable and thinking of the group.

I pointed at the lighter still in Angelina's hand.

"Fine. She can keep the parka. Give me the lighter — I need it to start a fire and stay warm."

Chris frowned. "It's just a lighter. So what if Angelina borrows it for a bit? Her hands are cold. Why do you have to fight a young girl over every little thing?"

He came closer, took my frozen hand in his, and tried to tuck it against his chest to warm it.

"Come on, don't be angry. My body heat will do more for you than that little flame ever could."

He'd stripped me of my right to survive and expected a scrap of cheap affection to pass for devotion.

I yanked my hand back.

"No, thanks. Your body heat is too precious for the likes of me."

His face darkened. "Kate, you are being completely unreasonable."

He turned and went back to Angelina's side, and didn't look at me again.

I retreated to a corner against the ice wall, my fingers quietly finding the spare communication battery hidden in an inner layer of my coat.

[The career glow-up is just as satisfying!]I smiled, shut off the display, and turned back to the next round of work.…At year's end, as the new lead of the expedition, I brought my team aboard the icebreaker and set out for the polar region once more. This time, there was no two-faced hypocrite playing favorites. No sniveling little schemer putting on a show of innocence. Everyone around me had clear eyes and steady hands — the kind of people you could actually trust to watch your back. The new team members were sharp and well-trained. Some checked equipment, some verified supplies, others ran through the emergency evacuation routes again and again.Todd had come along too. After the incident, he'd cooperated with the investigation on his own, testified honestly, and admitted that Chris had misled him back in the cave and that he'd joined in blaming me. Afterward, he'd asked to step down from the core team and started over from the most basic logistics work. Before we set out

"—the Kate who loved you was the one you froze to death in that cave. YOU killed her."Chris staggered and dropped to his knees at the mouth of the storm drain. Ignoring the filthy runoff, he shoved his arm in up to the shoulder, desperate to fish the lighter back out. His fingernails tore and bled from scraping at the pipe, but he came up with nothing.Security carried him off, and he was still shouting my name over and over. I didn't look back. The comments drifted by, slow and quiet.[Good.][That hurt him worse than any slap could have.][Kate's really free now.]…Chris's academic fraud scandal was confirmed beyond any doubt. Not only was he stripped of his professorship, he now faced a massive breach-of-contract settlement. The academic connections he'd once been so proud of turned on him overnight, avoiding him like the plague.Worse still, investigators found multiple records on his personal computer showing repeated attempts to bypass security and illegally duplicate

  • Whiteout   Chapter 9

By the time I left the National Convention Center, reporters had swarmed the street outside so thick you couldn't move. Investigators led Chris away. Angelina was taken into custody by police on the spot, suspected of sabotaging rescue communications equipment. As they put her in the squad car, she was still screaming his name. Chris didn't even turn his head.A line of gold text drifted across my vision.[Satisfaction unlocked: the scumbag's career collapses, the schemer gets arrested on the spot.][But it's not over yet. Chris still has a whole world of regret coming!][Kate, don't give him too much screen time. Three days is plenty!]Back at the research center, I got straight to work rebuilding the core data team. The project couldn't stop. Those hundred-year climate secrets buried under the ice didn't deserve to be lost just because two terrible people had made a mess of things.Over the next three days, Chris camped outside the research center every single day. On the f

I pulled a stack of documents out of my briefcase and dropped them on the table. On top was the data analysis report Angelina had submitted before joining the team."Did you really think you'd covered every angle?"Angelina's crying cut off instantly. I flipped the file open."You deliberately hid your physical exam results and lied about a history of asthma — all to win Chris's sympathy and, when the moment counted, secure yourself a seat on the rescue chopper. And here's the worse part: that core code you turned in, the code you claimed to have written entirely on your own—" I paused a while before continuing, "—is stolen garbage, lifted wholesale from an overseas open-source database and localized."Angelina's face went bloodless."That's a lie! I typed every line of that myself!"I kept my voice level. "Whether it's a lie or not, the technical review team has already issued their final determination. Your code comments still had the original author's initials left in them."

I took half a step back, and two security guards immediately moved to block Chris from me."What I've been through?" I said, my voice flat. "Weren't you busy in your office at the base, trying to crack my data password while you got ready to turn me into a convenient martyr for your acceptance speech?"Something in Chris's face went rigid. I turned to face the room."Of course Professor Hanks couldn't open the data. What he had on his workstation was only a sync cache, not the core source file. Full authorization has belonged to me, and only me, from the very beginning. I used an irreversible encryption algorithm designed for extreme field conditions — force it open, and the data destroys itself automatically."A low murmur rippled through the panel of experts.Chris's lips trembled. "Kate, you think ruining me means you take all the credit for this project?"I raised my hand. A recording played for the entire room. Chris's voice, cold and flat, rang clear through the hall."If

The most prestigious annual polar-expedition honors gala in the country was held at the National Convention Center. Chris stood in a crisp black suit, a white mourning flower pinned to his chest. Angelina, in a formal gown, stuck close to his side. The big screen behind them looped what Chris had billed as the last footage of me — carefully edited to keep only a silhouette from the moment supplies were handed out, casting himself as a tragic hero who'd made an agonizing sacrifice for the greater good.Camera flashes from the press nearly blinded the room."Professor Hanks, given the breakthrough this polar project has achieved, do you have anything you'd like to say to the late Ms. Kate Connery?"Chris took the microphone, drew a slow breath, and let his eyes redden right on cue."Kate wasn't just my wife — she was an irreplaceable part of this project. She left the chance of survival to a younger team member and left the glory to me. I'm standing here today to accept, on her beha
