Chapter 2

Author: Space Journey
It was noon by the time we woke up. Ivan carried me into the bathroom to shower, but we ended up fooling around in the bathtub for a long time instead.

I slumped against him, completely drained. His stamina was incredible. He seemed even more energetic than when we first got married.

That evening, he took me out to dinner. My legs nearly gave out when I stepped out of the car, but he caught me just in time. Ivan smiled, no longer able to hide the amusement in his eyes.

He had invited five close friends to the dinner, though I had only met them once or twice. During our two years of marriage, Ivan and I had spent most of our time in bed, with the occasional trip.

Then, what was this supposed to be? I understood him less and less by the minute.

However, Brenda arrived less than fifteen minutes later. She was even prettier than in the photo, with a fresh glow around her. Not that I felt inferior. I was beautiful, too. Ivan had said so the night before.

But… Was this some kind of ceremony to replace the old wife with the new one?

I had not realized Ivan cared so much about formalities. It almost felt like an official handoff.

"Brenda, you're staying for good this time, right?" One of his friends asked intentionally. It was quite obvious that that jab was meant for me.

I sat calmly beside Ivan and bit into the steak he held to my lips. I was not trying to put on a show. It was his fault I did not have enough strength left to cut my steak.

Brenda looked at me, emotions stirring in her clear eyes. She then asked with a smile, "I'm staying. I want to find a place and settle down. Can anyone recommend a good place for me?"

"Doesn't Ivan have an empty house in Southton?" The same friend asked, bringing Ivan into the conversation.

Ivan cut another piece of steak as he said, "My wife manages all my properties. I wouldn't know."

I blinked.

Everyone immediately turned and looked at me. He was certainly good at shirking responsibilities. I understood him less than ever now, though. Was he publicly backing me, or was he trying to make me step aside on my own?

He fed me another piece of steak, and I bit down harder than necessary, shredding it.

No other woman had any business moving into one of our homes.

But...

I glanced at Ivan as he cut another piece of steak carefully, looking like a truly devoted husband. The harder he acted, the more stubborn I became.

I looked at the friend who had started the conversation and suggested the house. Then, I said calmly, "Sure. It's empty, anyway. Someone might as well live there."

My casual answer stunned the table, and the friend choked on his drink.

Ivan's hands, which were holding his fork and knife, stopped midway through cutting the steak.

Even Brenda stared at me.

Was that really necessary?

I rolled my eyes but said nothing. They had probably begun plotting my replacement the moment Brenda returned. Their acting was so awful that even my nephew in kindergarten could have done a better job.

I had thought my generosity would give the hypocrites an easy way out, but Ivan stuffed a piece of steak into my mouth before I could continue. "Keep looking, Brenda. My wife and I used to live in that house. It wouldn't be appropriate for you to move in there."

Before I could finish chewing, he stuffed another piece into my mouth.

Ivan, you petty man. If you wanted me to give up my place, then let me. Are you trying to choke me instead?

Once the others realized the subject was going nowhere, they moved on to some other topic.

The rest of the dinner was just boring chit-chat, and I could not be bothered to listen, so I escaped to the restroom for some peace.

Warm water ran over my hands as I stared at the beautiful face in the mirror's reflection, full of confusion.

I had met Brenda, and Ivan and I had already slept together for the last time. This was my cue to exit.

The stage had been set for a showdown between the first love and the wife. I had delivered my lines exactly as expected, yet Ivan had suddenly refused to play his part.

What was he planning? Everything made less sense by the minute, and even I was getting confused.

When I returned to my seat, I realized Brenda was gone.

As for Ivan's friends, they had arrived eager for a show earlier, but none of them dared meet my eyes now.

Eventually, I got to my feet. This baby inside of me had a right to life, too. I should not be the one deciding all of this alone.By the time I reached Ivan's company, the workday had ended. His secretary was gone, but the lights in his office were still on.Before I could knock, I saw the last thing I wanted to see.Brenda's eyes were red, and Ivan had her in his arms. She sobbed so hard that I could make out only a few words. "I tried, but I can't forget. I really can't forget..."Forget whom? The man holding her?Fine. They could have each other!I could no longer control myself at the time and threw my handbag at them.Ivan had already noticed me the moment I entered, but it was obvious that he subconsciously tried to push Brenda away. Still, I was wearing sneakers and ran too quickly for him to catch up.I left the building without even taking the sports car he had given me.I rushed into the nearby subway station and took the subway to the end of the line. I had marri

After we signed the documents, Ivan took me back to the restaurant where I had caught him cheating.I stopped at the entrance and refused to go inside, no matter what he tried. Only after an employee came out and greeted me with an enthusiastic "Welcome, Mrs. Sanders!" did I finally go in.After dinner, Ivan took me to his tailor and asked him to measure me for a formal gown. "Mr. Turner, you know the rules... Of course. Anything except purple."I frowned, and the tailor explained. "The Sanders family will be holding a family gathering at the end of the year. The matriarch of the family always wears purple as that's her favorite color. So, her daughters-in-law are not expected to wear the same color."Daughter-in-law?Family gathering?I looked at Ivan. He had never mentioned taking me to any gathering."We hold it once every two years. You weren't my wife the last time we had the gathering," Ivan explained patiently while the tailor smiled at me.A man introducing you to his f

I turned toward Ivan subconsciously while we were both in bed and studied him curiously. He simply said, "I looked all of this up online. Tell me if there's anything you don't like, alright?"One of the most irresistible things in the world was seeing a completely different side of someone. It was especially hard when that someone was a powerful CEO who ordered everyone around during the day, then awkwardly rubbed your stomach in the soft evening light. Something inside me must have malfunctioned, because I started picking at him during such a tender moment."I don't like honey lemon tea. The honey has probably expired, too. And you should have cut the lemons thinner. Your hands aren't very warm either. You're only pressing on my stomach..."I complained about one thing after another, but Ivan did not argue at all. Once I had nearly finished the tea, he finally asked, "Are you done?"I nodded and waited to see what else he had planned. I had not expected that I was the clown. Ivan

Ivan was already home when I returned, and I smelled dinner as soon as I opened the door. He asked, "Why didn't you answer your phone?""I left it in the car and didn't notice," I said.Ivan let the lie pass and pushed me toward the sink to wash my hands. "Wash your hands, then come eat."The table was covered with my favorite dishes, but I had decided to be a bit rebellious today."I already ate. I'm not hungry." I closed the bathroom door and shut Ivan and the noises beyond out.The whirlpool tub was as comfortable as ever, and I thought over everything Mindy had said. "You only want to teach him a lesson. Just don't let him touch you..."She was right. I had been far too obedient all this while. So what if I spent his money? I was his wife, not his mistress. Ivan was my husband, not my boss. Why could he meet his first love openly, then come home and expect me to welcome him into my bed?I spat. "Scumbag!"A disgusting scumbag with far too much stamina! The memory of him we

"I simply can't tolerate emotional betrayal. Stop making wild guesses," I said as Mindy kept trying to persuade me with the same arguments after seeing my reaction. However, my thoughts had already drifted elsewhere.Had I really fallen in love with Ivan? Why wouldn't I?The questions hit me one after the other and left me shocked. I had always believed I was the one benefiting from our arrangement. I thought all I wanted was material comfort. But somewhere deep inside me, in the darkest corner, another voice shouted back.I could never have married a man I felt nothing for.Perhaps I had fallen for Ivan long ago without realizing it. Perhaps I had entered the marriage willingly from the very beginning. Perhaps greed had only been a cover for the feelings I had been too scared to admit.Or maybe…Maybe that had been the truth all along."I'm telling you, an old-money family like Ivan's must have an army of lawyers. Divorce him if you want, but you might end up without half of w

"By the way, my secretary has been quite careless lately. The remaining balance on several purchases still hasn't been paid."The remaining balance?Dang it! So this was his trap! The dress was so beautiful I would have skipped meals for three days to wear it, and it had cost nearly seven digits. Three-fifths of the price was still due, and it had to be paid all at once. There was no way I could come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars on such short notice. Was I supposed to watch them take back the dress when it was almost mine?Brenda's figure came to mind. She was about my size, too.I could give up the man, but never the dress!Ivan moved closer. "Ellena, is there something you want to tell me?""...I lost my ID, so I can't file for divorce yet," I said.He chuckled while I kept a straight face. What was my dignity compared with that dress? He pinched my cheek and turned my face toward him with a doting smile. "You little schemer. You're not getting away from me."
