Chapter 2

Author: Mabel Sterling
Scott's POV

In the end, both Queenie and Yvonne walked Wyatt back.

I opened the class group chat as soon as I returned to my room and submitted my exchange student application to my academic advisor.

Dad returned home at 8:00 pm and started making dinner for us.

Queenie came to my room to call me for dinner. She couldn't help but sigh when I ignored her. "You're still mad at Wyatt, aren't you? You know his personality, Scott. He may be loud and obnoxious sometimes, but he genuinely cares about you."

Wyatt transferred into our class during the first semester of sophomore year after his parents relocated for work. He made a strong impression on his first weekly test, taking my spot and putting himself, Yvonne, and Queenie in the top three.

At that time, a classmate I couldn't stand came over after looking at the test results and dropped a snide comment right in my ear.

"You're constantly so full of yourself just because you have two beautiful women by your side. You really blew it this time, didn't you? You won't even be able to hold onto third place in ranking anymore."

Wyatt happened to walk by and overheard his remarks. He immediately started a brawl with the classmate, and in the end, both of their parents were summoned to the school.

I was drawn to Wyatt's take-no-crap attitude, and before long, we became best friends.

Thus, from then on, our group grew from three to four. We even ended up at the same university after high school.

It went on like that until I suddenly realized I was being slowly pushed out of their circle.

Queenie reached over and yanked the blanket off my head. "Get up and eat dinner first, Scott."

I was genuinely hungry. I figured I shouldn't skip a meal just because I was upset, so I got up, washed my hands, and went to eat.

During dinner, Queenie casually mentioned, "A huge amusement park just opened in the city with a massive Ferris wheel. Wyatt invited all of us to go check it out tomorrow."

I was just about to refuse, but Dad suddenly spoke up. "I actually heard about that from a colleague of mine. You should go with them, Scott—and also keep Queenie company. She used to stare at the Ferris wheels on TV when she was little and always wanted to ride one.

"It's just a shame that there weren't any in our city back then. I've always been tied up with work, so I couldn't take you kids on trips outside the city much."

I couldn't bring myself to refuse anymore since Dad had already said so.

Our group chat was already blowing up by the time I finished dinner. Wyatt was stressing over what outfit to wear the next day, trying on a bunch of clothes and spamming the group chat with photos.

Queenie and Yvonne couldn't agree on anything, sending over a hundred messages arguing about it.

Wyatt angrily dropped a voice message into the group chat.

"Why are you two choosing for me? I sent those photos so that Scott could pick one for me. He's my best friend, so he knows what suits me best!"

He tentatively added, "You're not mad at me anymore, right, Scott? I swear I won't do that anymore."

Yvonne quickly answered on my behalf. "You don't have to worry about it. Scott isn't that petty. You actually helped him fix his awful sense of direction, so he should be thanking you instead—not getting angry. Isn't that right, Scott?"

Wyatt took her word for it and kept messaging me, urging me to choose the best outfit that suited him.

Yvonne tagged me in the group chat. "Doesn't this casual outfit look better on Wyatt, Scott? I mean, even the sales associate at the store complimented his good looks when he tried it on that day."

Queenie looked at the messages and sat down next to me, rolling her eyes. "That sales associate was literally just being polite, but Yvonne is clueless enough to believe it.

"You see, the black suit I picked looks much better! Hasn't she ever heard of how good a guy looks in a formal suit? Wyatt really loved it when he tried it on that day, too. You're like my brother, Scott, so you have to take my side on this!"

I shifted the conversation and suddenly asked her, "You guys bought both of these outfits in-store? When did you buy them? How come I had no idea about this?"

Queenie was replying to Wyatt's message, so she didn't even bother to look up. "We bought it at the store on the third floor of the shopping mall. You were there with us that day, weren't you? How did you forget about it already?"

Scott's POVI had walked pretty far off, but Yvonne remained standing on the spot with her head hanging. I had no idea what was going through her mind at that moment.Nathan teased me, saying, "You were holding out on me, huh? You never brought up the whole childhood betrothal thing before.""Yvonne personally shut that down years ago, so I didn't see any reason to mention it."I had gone on a trip with them after graduating from high school. Queenie and I ended up getting paired to buy drinks for everyone, and on our way back, we caught Wyatt telling Yvonne to keep her distance. "You're Scott's betrothed, Yvonne. I'm a man of principle, so I'll never lay a hand on my best friend's woman!"Yvonne scoffed and denied it outright. "What are you talking about? That was just something both of our parents said offhandedly. Scott's mother had already passed away many years ago. Who in their right mind would still take that stuff seriously?"Neither of us wanted to make things awkward,

Scott's POVNathan quickly explained, "I'm honestly not the type to badmouth people behind their backs, but since you're my friend, I need to point out a few things. "First, a best friend normally wouldn't ditch you for your sister or your childhood sweetheart. Second, a man with any decency wouldn't string two women along at the same time. Third—and last—I bet you're going to tell me that he just doesn't know they like him and views them as regular friends."I was caught off guard, as that was exactly what I had been about to say.Nathan shot me an exasperated look. "Come on, Scott! If even a dummy like you can figure it out, do you honestly think the guy involved is completely clueless? Those posts and messages asking who he should choose were just his subtle way of bragging in front of you! "He's probably only stringing those two idiots along because he hasn't scored a better option yet!"He reached out, patted my shoulder, and got to his feet. "He's just playing with you, s

Scott's POVDad called me after my classes that afternoon. "I've got some good news, Scott! Queenie's mother came back for her! She said she was struggling back then and had no other choice but to give her up. She's doing better now, so she wants to take Queenie back and make up for everything."Oh, right! Why didn't you tell Queenie that you were going on an exchange? She called me today just to ask about it."I hesitated for a moment before replying, "I've mentioned it to her before. I guess she must have forgotten about it." I had been prepping for my foreign language exams all through the fall semester of junior year. Queenie caught me reviewing my notes once and casually asked why I was still grinding vocabulary when I had already passed my foreign language proficiency test. That was when I mentioned I wanted to participate in an exchange program abroad.Queenie fell silent for a moment after hearing that, seemingly considering what I had said.Later, whenever Wyatt tried

Scott's POVNathan kept his word, dragging me out toward the beach early in the morning the day after tomorrow.I was checking the map the entire way.Nathan pointed out some landmarks along the way. "You should pay attention to these. These are the key things you need to remember about the route."He turned off my navigation on our way back. "It's your turn to guide us to the subway station, Scott."I took the wrong way three times, but thankfully we still made it safely to the subway station.Nathan exclaimed, "You've done it! You're way better at this than I expected. You have no idea—I took my brother the wrong way five times when he was training me. He got so frustrated he chewed me out and called me a lost cause!"We both burst into laughter again.I made a few edits to the beach photos once we got back to the dorm, and after getting Nathan's permission, I posted them on my social media.…Third-Person POVYvonne only bothered to check Scott's social media a week later

Scott's POVNathan continued, "It's way too hot these next couple of days, though. It'll be a little cooler the day after tomorrow. We can go together then." I looked up at him in surprise. "Are you for real? Thanks for coming with me!"Nathan grew up in Seabourne County, surrounded by the ocean. He was probably sick to death of beach sunsets and coastal views by now. He wouldn't have bothered making the trip if he wasn't doing it just for my sake.Nathan smiled sheepishly and said, "It's no big deal. I was planning on heading over there anyway."He cracked up when he saw the confusion on my face, doubling over with laughter. "You didn't actually think everyone from Seabourne County grew up on the beach, did you? I live in the center of the county, so I don't get to stare at the sea every time I look out my window. In addition, going to the beach with a friend has a whole different vibe than going by yourself."We locked eyes and started laughing so hard our stomachs hurt, and

  • Who Needs Traitors when You've Got Maps?   Chapter 5

Scott's POVI was on my way to the airport when Dad called me. It was pretty noisy in the background, so I assumed he was probably still working in the kitchen. "I'm sorry for not being able to take you to the airport, Scott. You have to be careful while you're out there by yourself—don't talk to strangers or take random people to your place. If you need anything or want a taste of home, just give me a call, and I'll send it over."I could feel my face flush as I held back a sob. "Got it, Dad…"Dad had already drilled these exact points into me several times the night before."I'll call you to let you know I made it as soon as I land."Just then, I noticed that Yvonne had posted another photo of the three of them in the "Together 4 Life" group chat once I ended the call, tagging me as well. They booked a three-seat row together again. Wyatt, sitting in the middle seat, snapped the photo. "I intentionally left a spot for Scott. Who wants to edit him into the photo?"The spot h
