Chapter 4

Author: Mabel Sterling
Scott's POV

In the end, even the ticket attendant couldn't stand watching it anymore and chimed in to back me up. "It's really no big deal! I'll call my son over right now to take a spin with you—I'll have him ride with you twice!"

He actually pulled out his phone right after saying that and was about to make the call.

I just smiled and waved my hand. "It's alright! I actually enjoy my own company more!"

I stepped off the Ferris wheel, only to find that the three of them had vanished again. I didn't freak out and hunt around for them like I used to. Instead, I just took out my phone, brought up a ride-hailing app, and headed home.

Dad happened to have the day off, so he was slightly surprised when he saw me return home alone. "Why are you back so early? Have you eaten? Where's Queenie?"

I said nothing and sat down beside him. "I want to spend a semester abroad as an exchange student, Dad. Is that alright with you?"

"Of course! It's great to get out there and see the world while you're still young! I also feel reassured knowing that you'll be going with Queenie!"

I shook my head and said, "Queenie won't be coming along with me. We're old enough to make our own choices now, so I can't just force her to go down a path she doesn't want for herself."

Dad lost his initial confidence, saying hesitantly, "You've never been far away on your own before. How can you suddenly go abroad by yourself?"

I quickly reassured him, "I won't be alone since other students from my university are going too. I've already found a travel buddy as well."

Dad finally gave in, though he still looked hesitant.

It was almost evening by the time Queenie returned home. "We just stepped away to buy some drinks, Scott. Why did you come back alone?"

I was filling out my exchange student application and didn't even bother looking back at her. "It's too hot out there, so I didn't want to stand around waiting."

I noticed that the group chat had more than 100 messages by the time I finished submitting everything. They were in the middle of discussing what to pack, which sunscreen to buy, transportation, and the local places and food they wanted to try.

I froze for a good while before sending a message in the group chat. "Where are you guys planning to go?"

Queenie yelled out a curse from the other room before barging into my bedroom. "We booked tickets for a trip this afternoon. You weren't with us, so we completely forgot to include you! I'll see if I can get you on the waitlist for a ticket right now!"

Just then, Wyatt sent over a voice message.

"Did you actually forget? We bought the very last three tickets this afternoon! You two are the ones to blame for this. You two wouldn't stop talking in my ear all afternoon, and I ended up forgetting such an important thing!"

Seeing that the three of them were about to start fighting again, I quickly sent a message in the group chat.

"You guys don't need to get me a ticket. It's so hot out that I'd rather stay home."

Queenie quietly breathed a sigh of relief next to me and closed the ticket site. "It really is ridiculously hot this summer. It's alright, Scott. I'll take lots of photos for you while we're there. If I spot any cool souvenirs, I'll be sure to bring them home for you!"

I happened to book my flight out of the country on the day they set off on their trip.

Queenie was still nagging me about one thing after another before leaving for their trip.

"You should go easy on the cold watermelon. Dad isn't around, so don't buy a whole one. Oh, and make sure you lock the door when you're home alone, Scott."

Yvonne came downstairs just then and scoffed. "You can stay here and keep fussing over Scott. I'll go meet up with Wyatt first."

Queenie gritted her teeth and followed right behind her.

It was only after their car drove out of sight that I leisurely wheeled my suitcase out of the bedroom and headed downstairs.

Finally, I didn't have to sit on the sidelines of their group dynamic this time around.

  • Who Needs Traitors when You've Got Maps?   Chapter 10

Scott's POVI had walked pretty far off, but Yvonne remained standing on the spot with her head hanging. I had no idea what was going through her mind at that moment.Nathan teased me, saying, "You were holding out on me, huh? You never brought up the whole childhood betrothal thing before.""Yvonne personally shut that down years ago, so I didn't see any reason to mention it."I had gone on a trip with them after graduating from high school. Queenie and I ended up getting paired to buy drinks for everyone, and on our way back, we caught Wyatt telling Yvonne to keep her distance. "You're Scott's betrothed, Yvonne. I'm a man of principle, so I'll never lay a hand on my best friend's woman!"Yvonne scoffed and denied it outright. "What are you talking about? That was just something both of our parents said offhandedly. Scott's mother had already passed away many years ago. Who in their right mind would still take that stuff seriously?"Neither of us wanted to make things awkward,

  • Who Needs Traitors when You've Got Maps?   Chapter 9

Scott's POVNathan quickly explained, "I'm honestly not the type to badmouth people behind their backs, but since you're my friend, I need to point out a few things. "First, a best friend normally wouldn't ditch you for your sister or your childhood sweetheart. Second, a man with any decency wouldn't string two women along at the same time. Third—and last—I bet you're going to tell me that he just doesn't know they like him and views them as regular friends."I was caught off guard, as that was exactly what I had been about to say.Nathan shot me an exasperated look. "Come on, Scott! If even a dummy like you can figure it out, do you honestly think the guy involved is completely clueless? Those posts and messages asking who he should choose were just his subtle way of bragging in front of you! "He's probably only stringing those two idiots along because he hasn't scored a better option yet!"He reached out, patted my shoulder, and got to his feet. "He's just playing with you, s

Scott's POVDad called me after my classes that afternoon. "I've got some good news, Scott! Queenie's mother came back for her! She said she was struggling back then and had no other choice but to give her up. She's doing better now, so she wants to take Queenie back and make up for everything."Oh, right! Why didn't you tell Queenie that you were going on an exchange? She called me today just to ask about it."I hesitated for a moment before replying, "I've mentioned it to her before. I guess she must have forgotten about it." I had been prepping for my foreign language exams all through the fall semester of junior year. Queenie caught me reviewing my notes once and casually asked why I was still grinding vocabulary when I had already passed my foreign language proficiency test. That was when I mentioned I wanted to participate in an exchange program abroad.Queenie fell silent for a moment after hearing that, seemingly considering what I had said.Later, whenever Wyatt tried

Scott's POVNathan kept his word, dragging me out toward the beach early in the morning the day after tomorrow.I was checking the map the entire way.Nathan pointed out some landmarks along the way. "You should pay attention to these. These are the key things you need to remember about the route."He turned off my navigation on our way back. "It's your turn to guide us to the subway station, Scott."I took the wrong way three times, but thankfully we still made it safely to the subway station.Nathan exclaimed, "You've done it! You're way better at this than I expected. You have no idea—I took my brother the wrong way five times when he was training me. He got so frustrated he chewed me out and called me a lost cause!"We both burst into laughter again.I made a few edits to the beach photos once we got back to the dorm, and after getting Nathan's permission, I posted them on my social media.…Third-Person POVYvonne only bothered to check Scott's social media a week later

Scott's POVNathan continued, "It's way too hot these next couple of days, though. It'll be a little cooler the day after tomorrow. We can go together then." I looked up at him in surprise. "Are you for real? Thanks for coming with me!"Nathan grew up in Seabourne County, surrounded by the ocean. He was probably sick to death of beach sunsets and coastal views by now. He wouldn't have bothered making the trip if he wasn't doing it just for my sake.Nathan smiled sheepishly and said, "It's no big deal. I was planning on heading over there anyway."He cracked up when he saw the confusion on my face, doubling over with laughter. "You didn't actually think everyone from Seabourne County grew up on the beach, did you? I live in the center of the county, so I don't get to stare at the sea every time I look out my window. In addition, going to the beach with a friend has a whole different vibe than going by yourself."We locked eyes and started laughing so hard our stomachs hurt, and

  • Who Needs Traitors when You've Got Maps?   Chapter 5

Scott's POVI was on my way to the airport when Dad called me. It was pretty noisy in the background, so I assumed he was probably still working in the kitchen. "I'm sorry for not being able to take you to the airport, Scott. You have to be careful while you're out there by yourself—don't talk to strangers or take random people to your place. If you need anything or want a taste of home, just give me a call, and I'll send it over."I could feel my face flush as I held back a sob. "Got it, Dad…"Dad had already drilled these exact points into me several times the night before."I'll call you to let you know I made it as soon as I land."Just then, I noticed that Yvonne had posted another photo of the three of them in the "Together 4 Life" group chat once I ended the call, tagging me as well. They booked a three-seat row together again. Wyatt, sitting in the middle seat, snapped the photo. "I intentionally left a spot for Scott. Who wants to edit him into the photo?"The spot h
