Chapter 4

作者: Luna V
"Impossible…" My fingers shook as I kept searching.

Ethan came over and gently placed his hands on my shoulders. "Lily, the pressure of trying for a pup… it's been affecting you. Creating fantasies."

I shoved his hands away and ran out of the tavern.

Back to the shrine. Find the Seer. Find the acolyte.

They have to remember.

I burst into the infirmary wing. The acolyte was helping an elderly she-wolf with a healing poultice.

I grabbed her sleeve. "You. You remember me."

She jumped, looking at me with blank politeness. "Luna? Have we met?"

"Of course we have! This morning, you took remembrance images with me—"

She thought for a moment, then shook her head, cutting me off. "I've been in the herbarium all morning, Luna, preparing remedies. I haven't been to the Blessing Chambers. Are you here for a fertility reading?"

The world tilted.

"The Seer, then! The woman who did my scrying!"

The acolyte checked a wax tablet. "The only Seer on duty today is Elder Corvus. He's male. There have been no female Seers in the Chambers today."

A roaring sound filled my ears.

A she-wolf waiting nearby whispered to her companion, just loud enough. "Is she touched in the head?"

"Desperation can do that. My cousin's mate couldn't conceive, started claiming she was having phantom pregnancies…"

"But her belly is flat…"

I fled to the washroom. I stood before the polished metal mirror, hauled my tunic up.

Smooth skin. As if the last seven moons had never happened.

I slid down the wall onto the cold floor, mind empty.

No. There has to be something. A piece I'm missing.

My communication rune buzzed. My mother.

I scrambled to answer.

"Lily, did the patrol deliver the venison?"

I swallowed, a fragile hope blooming. "Mom… you remember I'm carrying, right?"

Silence on the other end for two beats. Then, confused concern. "Carrying? You and Ethan are still trying, aren't you? You haven't been blessed yet."

My hand holding the rune began to shake violently.

"Mom, I sent you sketches yesterday. My belly."

Her voice grew more worried. "No, honey, you didn't. The last time you pulsed me was to ask for the venison. That's all."

I pulled up our mind-link log. The image transfers were gone.

"Lily, are you overtired? Don't push yourself so hard. A pup will come when the Moon wills it…"

Sitting on the floor, a deep, penetrating cold seeped into my bones.

Was I destined to relive this nightmare? Trapped in the same cruel design?

No. I will not just lie down.

I splashed water on my face and walked out. Immediately, I heard raised voices.

"That's her, the one causing the disturbance…"

"Fetch the Enforcers. Her mind is clearly unwell…"

I followed the sound.

A small crowd had gathered near the Blessing Chambers. At its center, Ethan was speaking calmly to a senior Healer. He saw me and hurried over.

"Lily, where did you go? I was searching everywhere."

I looked at him.

My mate of five years. Always gentle, always caring.

Now, his eyes held only deep concern and a patient, aching pity.

I held his gaze. "Ethan. Tell me the truth. You truly don't remember the Blessing? The pup?"

He sighed, reaching for my hand. "My heart, let's go home. You need rest."

"Answer me!"

He hesitated. A flicker of something—not memory, but resolve—in his eyes.

"Lily. You are not pregnant."

I closed my eyes. Of course.

"Luna, you are disrupting the sacred peace." Two Pack Enforcers in leathers approached. "You must leave the shrine. Now."

I took a step back.

Everyone was staring. Whispers slithered through the air.

"Such a shame, she was pretty…"

"I've seen this before. They end up in the isolation caves…"

"Poor Alpha, tied to a broken mate…"

Ethan stepped forward, addressing the Enforcers. "My apologies. My Luna is unwell. I will take her home."

He took my wrist, his grip firm, and began leading me away. I moved like a puppet.

Just then, something on the wall caught my eye.

A large lunar calendar hung in the main hall—etched stone, updated daily with the moon’s cycle.

I stopped dead.

My fingers shot out, grabbing the sleeve of a passing acolyte. My voice trembled.

“That… the date on it… is it accurate?”

She startled at my grip, eyes widening. “Y-Yes, Luna. It’s updated by the Grand Seer every day. Why?”

My breath hitched.

So that was it.

I finally understood!

It wasn’t that my pup had disappeared without a trace!

  • Who Stole My Pup?   Chapter 10

The Enforcer, a she-wolf with kind eyes, seemed to understand. She didn’t press, just sat nearby, a silent vigil. The waiting was an eternity. Finally, an Elder Healer entered, carrying a bowl of moonlit water and silver dust—the tools of the Blood Trace. His expression was solemn.“The blood sings true,” he announced to the hall. “The pup is of Luna Lily’s direct line. A female, born under the Frost Moon, one year past. A forced moon-tide birth.”I took the formal parchment he offered. The words swam before my eyes. Lineage confirmed. Matriarchal link: absolute.A sound broke from me, a raw, wounded thing. My daughter. She was real. She had lived a year. Learned to walk. To make sounds. To look at a face and call it…I gripped the parchment, my tears falling on the official seal.“Luna,” the head Enforcer said. “Alpha Ethan and Seer Seraphina have confessed to the conspiracy. The High Priestess and two attending Seers have admitted to accepting silver to alter scrolls and perform the

Ethan trembled, a full-body shiver of a wolf caught in a silver snare. His mouth worked, but no sound came out.I had anticipated resistance. My shadow-walker, on a separate retainer, had already mind-linked the Enforcers about Seraphina. As if summoned by the accusation, Seraphina appeared at the hall entrance. Two senior Enforcers flanked her.She looked ghostly. Her eyes were red-raw. And in her arms, swaddled in a soft grey pelt, was a pup.A little female, about a year old, with curious dark eyes that took in the crowded hall. One glance. One heartbeat.I knew.My legs almost buckled. I took a step forward, but Ethan grabbed my arm. “Lily, wait, let me—”“Let you what?” I ripped my arm from his grasp, the tears finally breaking free. “Explain how you stole her? Explain the moon-tide induction that nearly killed us both? Or explain how you and your never-forgotten she-wolf used my daughter to patch the hole your son left?”Seraphina clutched the pup tighter, shrinking back. “It’s n

Ethan arrived swiftly, bursting into the hall with perfectly crafted alarm. “Lily! My heart, are you unharmed?”He turned to the Enforcers and the High Priestess, offering a shallow bow of contrition. “Forgive this. My mate… her wolf has been grieving a barren den. It has manifested a false-pregnancy phantom. She believes it was real…”“Ah, a phantom womb… poor creature.”“He’s too good for her. She should release him from the bond.”“Moon-touched, for sure.”The crowd murmured. The moon-stone glowed brighter, feeding the pack-link.Ethan approached me, his hand outstretched, his face the picture of loving concern. “Lily, come home. Please.”I looked at that face. The perfect, caring mask.Last time, this mask made me believe I was the most cherished she-wolf in the world. Not again.“Home?” I knocked his hand aside. “Which den, Ethan? The one you share with Seraphina in your heart? Or the empty one you keep me in?”Ethan’s smile froze. “Lily, what are you saying?”I pitched my voice t

The High Priestess of the Moon Circle entered, flanked by two Law-Speakers. Her silver robes were immaculate, her face a mask of solemn authority.“Enforcers,” she intoned. “We received a mind-link that our sacred order is being slandered in this hall. We demand rectification under the Ancient Code.”Her cold gaze found me. “Luna Lily. You came to our grove before, distressed. We attributed it to moon-sickness and showed mercy. We did not invoke the penalty for disrupting a Consecration. Yet here you are, escalating fantasy into formal accusation.”“Accusation?” A harsh laugh escaped me. “Your Circle took eighty-thousand in silver from my mate! You performed a forced moon-tide birth on me and stole the pup! And you dare speak of slander?”The High Priestess’s composure flickered for a nanosecond. “Eighty-thousand? Forced birth? Luna, where is your proof?”“I…”I was trapped. The silver trail was the shadow-walker’s find, its origins murky, not direct proof. The birthing record? The Cir

“There’s more,” the shadow-walker slid another file across the table. “They had a son. Six years old. He suffered from Moon-Wasting Sickness. He needed a Shadow-Meld ritual.”“As I understand it,” he continued, his voice low, “for such rituals, the essence of a full-blooded sibling works best. Especially a newborn. The Moon’s Breath in the blood from a first cry… its potency is unmatched.”The parchments slipped from my fingers.Every shattered piece snapped into place.Ethan’s son from his previous bond was dying. He needed a sibling’s essence to survive. But his bond with Seraphina was severed. They couldn’t produce another pup.And I… I was pregnant.“The boy?” I managed to ask. “What happened?”The shadow-walker shook his head. “He faded last moon-cycle.”I closed my eyes. The heat behind my lids was unbearable.“One more thing,” his tone turned grave. “Your mate, this past year, made three transfers to a private account held by the Seer’s Circle. A total sum that would purchase a

"Luna, you will leave." The Enforcer's hand landed heavily on my shoulder.Ethan was at my side, voice soothing. "Lily, please. Just come home…"I couldn't tear my eyes from the stone carving. The Great Moon Cycle: Year 472.The day of my Blessing had been Year 471.A full turning of the seasons.I hadn't dozed for a few hours. I'd been lost for an entire year.A new, more terrifying suspicion clawed its way into my mind."Lily?" Ethan's voice was cautious. "What is it?"I slowly turned my head to look at his face, so full of tender worry.Last life, he'd looked at me just like this before they took me away.If I fought now, the outcome would be the same.I forced the storm inside me into a small, locked box. A weary, defeated smile touched my lips. "Nothing. You're right. I'm just… exhausted. My mind is playing tricks."The relief that washed over Ethan was palpable. He slipped an arm around me. "Let's get you home."I let him guide me out, the whispers of the crowd following us like
