Chapter 4 The Hardest Question

Penulis: Mysterious Jellyfish
Once the bet was made, Celine immediately called the Department of Education's tip line and demanded that the entire process be livestreamed.

To make herself look impartial, she even called over the dean who lived in the same neighborhood—the same Linnea Ashcombe who had once accepted money from Lucian to help change his exam scores.

Linnea was a portly middle-aged woman. Perhaps it was all in my head, but I felt like I was watching a pig trot over when she rushed to the scene. Still, she immediately straightened and draped herself in an air of impartiality the moment she saw the camera.

"What's going on here? What's with all the commotion?" she demanded brusquely.

Lucian spotted Linnea and rushed over as if she'd come to save him.

"Ms. Ashcombe, you have to stand up for me! Someone switched my college admissions exam score. I only got 324… but I've always scored top ten in my grade!"

Linnea's expression changed instantly.

She knew what Lucian was really capable of, but she'd taken his money. So, they were in this together.

If Lucian had actually done badly on the exam and his cheating at school came to light… Well, she'd be finished as well.

Linnea's eyes shifted, and she immediately pointed at me with righteous indignation.

"Evander! You again! You've never applied yourself at school. You're always skipping class to hang around the Olympiad class. And now you've even tampered with the college admissions exam scores? This is outrageous!"

Celine looked like she'd just found her strongest witness. She excitedly turned to the livestream and blabbered, "Did everyone hear that? Even the dean says so! Evander has always been a lousy student! How could he possibly score higher than Lucian?

"There's only one explanation—he switched the scores!"

The comments exploded again.

"We've got proof! Even the dean has testified against that brat!"

"He skipped class to hang around the Olympiad class? That's hilarious. You can't just walk into the Olympiad class whenever you feel like it."

"His family must've paid to get him in there just so he could pad his resume."

I looked at Linnea's ugly expression and spoke calmly. "Ms. Ashcombe, accusations require evidence. You say I never apply myself. Then, tell me, which exam did I fail during my senior year?"

Linnea was momentarily at a loss for words.

I never once attended the regular class exams ever since I transferred to the Olympiad class.

My tests came directly from the Olympiad class, and they were infamous for being ten times harder than the regular class exams, and those scores weren't included in the grade rankings.

She stubbornly argued in an attempt to cover her mortification, "You were too afraid to take the grade-wide exams. What else could that mean? Lucian, on the other hand, has always been in the top ten in his grade!"

"Oh? Always in the top ten?"

I looked at Lucian with a faint smile.

"Lucian, since Ms. Ashcombe has so much confidence in you, why don't you solve an actual college admissions exam question right now, in front of the tens of thousands watching this livestream?"

I pulled up a picture of the final math problem from this year's exam and held it up to the camera.

"This was the toughest problem in this year's exam. If you really were wrongly given a 324 and a top student who normally scores in the 1500s, surely this problem wouldn't take you more than five minutes, right?"

Lucian's face went deathly pale as cold sweat trickled down his forehead.

There was no way he could solve it.

His grades had always come from cheat sheets and memorized answers.

Celine immediately jumped to his defense. "Evander, what are you trying to do? Lucian is clearly shaken right now, yet you're going to force him to solve a problem? You're deliberately putting him under pressure!"

Linnea chimed in as well, "Exactly! The college admissions exam is so difficult. Who could solve a problem like that in the middle of all this racket? You're asking too much of him!"

I let out a cold laugh. "You can't solve it? Fine."

I casually picked up a twig from the flower bed beside us and started writing rapidly in the dust-covered ground.

My movements were smooth and effortless, without the slightest hint of pause.

The dusty ground was covered in dense equations in less than a minute.

…

I'd given them three different solutions. Each one was simpler and more elegant than the official answer.

Once I was done, I tossed the twig aside, dusted off my hands, and looked at the stunned crowd. "I'm supposedly a lousy student who could only score 324, yet I can work this problem out easily. Meanwhile, this hoity-toity top student who scores in the 1500s can't? Ridiculous, don't you think?"

Celine and Lucian went stark white as soon as I brought up the bet.Tens of thousands of people had watched the whole thing unfold during the livestream. We'd bet that they would kneel in front of the mud pit, lick it clean, and apologize publicly across the internet if I hadn't tampered with Lucian's score. Now, it was their time to make good on that bet."Evander… isn't this taking things a little too far?" Celine forced a smile, trying to laugh it off. "We're all classmates. It was just a joke…""A joke?" I pointed at the phone that was still livestreaming."Tens of thousands of people are watching. Yet, you're calling it a joke? You two certainly didn't look like you were joking when you were so eager to make me kneel before you."The comments in the livestream started egging them on."Don't back out now! Where's all the bravado you had earlier, huh?""A bet's a bet! Keep your word!""Lick! Lick! Lick!"Lucian looked at the pit filled with muddy water and backed away in f

Celine swayed as she stared at the two test papers, nearly losing her balance. The truth spoke for itself.Lucian's image as a top student had been shattered into dust.Every word she'd said to defend Lucian just moments ago had become the blade of her own execution. Her fans who had supported her in the livestream chat began turning against her one after another."I'm unfollowing her! How could I ever have been a fan of someone this blind?""She falsely accused her childhood friend, a genius, just to defend a cheating, manipulative scumbag? What's wrong with her?""So, this is what they call true love? Looks more like stupidity to me."The evidence was undeniable, and public opinion turned against them.Lucian's reputation was in ruins. He slumped to the floor, staring at the flood of insults on his phone as his body shook with fear and despair. "No… That's not it. That's not what happened…"He reached for Celine's pant leg. "Celine, please help me… I love you. I only lied b

I wasn't fazed in the face of Lucian's hysterical accusations. Instead, I tapped on my chin and wondered aloud, "Why should I have told you? Do I owe you an explanation? Besides, even if I'd told you sooner, would you have believed me? Would Celine?"I turned to Celine, who had remained silent this whole time. Her face was pale, her eyes vacant. She looked as if her entire worldview had just collapsed. However, she still refused to back down as she tried to find a way to justify what she'd done."Even… Even if you are a shoo-in for Kingswell University, that doesn't prove you didn't tamper with Lucian's score!"Celine gritted her teeth, her voice trembling."Maybe… Maybe you lowered Lucian's score on purpose just to humiliate him. You could've used your family's connections to do it! You've done things like this before. You've always been jealous of Lucian!"I almost laughed at her audacity. That was the female lead for them. She could still use her bizarre logic to find a wa

The admissions officer entered my information. My entire student record appeared on the screen the very next second."Name: Evander Holloway""Admitted to: Kingswell University—Computer Science Honors Program""Admission: Guaranteed admission—35th International Mathematical Olympiad Gold Medalist"Every word was a slap in the face to Lucian and Celine. The livestream chat exploded, with "No way!" and "Holy crap!" flooding the screen."It really is the official website! If that's fake, then I'll eat my keyboard!""An International Mathematical Olympiad gold medal? Holy crap, he's not a lousy student. He's a total genius!""God, this is hilarious! Didn't a certain someone accuse him of forging official documents? How does your face feel now?""Am I the only one who noticed what he did? He'd already earned a guaranteed admission, which means he didn't even need to take the college admissions exam! He really did just score 128 for fun!"The evidence was undeniable.Lucian's leg

The admissions officer walked up to me and handed me an acceptance letter with both hands, her tone respectful and enthusiastic."Congratulations, Evander. You've been admitted to Kingswell University's Honors Program in Computer Science six months ago through our elite early-admission program for International Mathematical Olympiad gold medalists. "I'm the head of admissions at Kingswell University, and I've come to personally deliver your acceptance letter."The entire crowd fell so silent that one could even hear the rustling of leaves in the wind. The ecstatic smile on Celine's face froze as her jaw dropped open wide enough to fit an egg.Lucian's sobs caught in his throat, ending in a strange hiccup.Linnea rolled her eyes back and nearly fell into a dead faint. The livestream chat went quiet for a second. Then, the comments came pouring in."What?""Wait, what did I just hear? Early admission? The Honors Program?""That's Kingswell University's Honors Program! That's w

The livestream chat, which had been filled with a constant stream of insults, suddenly went quiet for a few seconds. Then, the mood began to shift."Whoa… If he really solved it that fast, that's actually impressive.""I'm a math major. All three solutions show higher-level mathematical thinking. There's no way an ordinary high school student could've come up with them!""Wait… did we actually target the wrong person?""No way! He must've memorized the answers in advance! He must've staged this somehow!"Celine stared at the formulas on the ground. She couldn't make much sense of them, but even she could tell something was off.She just refused to face the facts. She couldn't believe that the boy she'd defended for three years was a complete idiot, and she certainly couldn't believe that Evander, who had spent all those years chasing after her, was a genius."You… You must've memorized the answers in advance!" Celine forced herself to say. "That doesn't prove anything! It only
