Chapter 3 The Bet

Author: Mysterious Jellyfish
Celine smiled triumphantly as her eyes skimmed through the flood of insults filling the screen.

She turned her phone toward me and declared smugly, "See that, Evander? It's all of us against you! Get down on your knees and apologize to Lucian. Then, you'd better swear to turn yourself in. If you do, maybe everyone online will go easy on you."

Lucian put on an act too, tugging at Celine's sleeve. "Celine, don't. Evander is your childhood friend. We should give him a second chance as long as he's willing to change."

"A second chance?" Celine scoffed. "People like him won't give up until they're forced to face the consequences. He's getting on his knees today."

I watched their ridiculous little act and found it almost funny.

In the original story, the pressure from the public had driven me to a mental breakdown. It had gotten so bad that it wasn't an understatement to say that I was left with nowhere to turn.

But this time, I was different.

I looked straight into Celine's camera. I didn't flinch. Instead, I flashed them a bright smile.

"To those watching, by all means, keep the insults coming." I cleared my throat, my voice carrying clearly through the livestream. "Since everyone's here, why don't we make a bet in front of the internet?"

Celine frowned. "What are you trying to pull now?"

"Let's bet on one thing—whether Lucian really got that 324 himself."

I stared straight into Lucian's eyes as he avoided my gaze.

"If the investigation proves that I switched the scores, then I'll not only give his score back, but I'll also donate half of the Holloway family's assets to Lucian. I'll even livestream myself getting on my knees and crawling out of this neighborhood!"

The livestream went silent for a second. Then, the comments exploded.

"Now, that's a serious bet."

"Half the Holloway family's assets? That's billions!"

"Is this rich heir crazy, or does he actually know something we don't?"

Even Celine was startled by my wager.

Yet, when she glanced at Lucian, who was putting on an Oscar-worthy performance of a pitiful victim trying to stay strong, her sense of justice flared again.

"Fine! You've got a bet!"

Then, she growled through gritted teeth, "If you lose, you'll get out of this city and never show your face in front of us again!"

"And what happens if you lose?" I shot back, my gaze sharp as a blade.

Celine sneered. "How could we possibly lose? Everyone knows how good Lucian is."

"If you lose…" I pointed at the muddy puddle on the ground. "You two will kneel right here and lick all the water out of this puddle. Then, you'll admit to the entire internet that you're lying scum. How about that?"

Lucian flinched and instinctively tightened his grip on Celine's hand. "Celine, don't…"

He was uneasy.

After all, he knew better than anyone how he'd gotten that 324.

Alas, Celine was too consumed by anger to notice. She thought Lucian was simply kind and timid, which only made her feel more protective of him.

She assured him, "Don't be afraid, Lucian. You've done nothing wrong, so you have nothing to fear. We'll take his bet and make him admit defeat!"

She turned toward the camera and shouted, "I'll take the bet for Lucian! Evander, just wait until you're publicly disgraced!"

The comments erupted in cheers.

"The female lead is badass!"

"I can't wait to see this rich heir get humbled!"

"This bet is insane. I've already screen-recorded it. Whoever backs out is a coward!"

Celine and Lucian went stark white as soon as I brought up the bet.Tens of thousands of people had watched the whole thing unfold during the livestream. We'd bet that they would kneel in front of the mud pit, lick it clean, and apologize publicly across the internet if I hadn't tampered with Lucian's score. Now, it was their time to make good on that bet."Evander… isn't this taking things a little too far?" Celine forced a smile, trying to laugh it off. "We're all classmates. It was just a joke…""A joke?" I pointed at the phone that was still livestreaming."Tens of thousands of people are watching. Yet, you're calling it a joke? You two certainly didn't look like you were joking when you were so eager to make me kneel before you."The comments in the livestream started egging them on."Don't back out now! Where's all the bravado you had earlier, huh?""A bet's a bet! Keep your word!""Lick! Lick! Lick!"Lucian looked at the pit filled with muddy water and backed away in f

Celine swayed as she stared at the two test papers, nearly losing her balance. The truth spoke for itself.Lucian's image as a top student had been shattered into dust.Every word she'd said to defend Lucian just moments ago had become the blade of her own execution. Her fans who had supported her in the livestream chat began turning against her one after another."I'm unfollowing her! How could I ever have been a fan of someone this blind?""She falsely accused her childhood friend, a genius, just to defend a cheating, manipulative scumbag? What's wrong with her?""So, this is what they call true love? Looks more like stupidity to me."The evidence was undeniable, and public opinion turned against them.Lucian's reputation was in ruins. He slumped to the floor, staring at the flood of insults on his phone as his body shook with fear and despair. "No… That's not it. That's not what happened…"He reached for Celine's pant leg. I wasn't fazed in the face of Lucian's hysterical accusations. Instead, I tapped on my chin and wondered aloud, "Why should I have told you? Do I owe you an explanation? Besides, even if I'd told you sooner, would you have believed me? Would Celine?"I turned to Celine, who had remained silent this whole time. Her face was pale, her eyes vacant. She looked as if her entire worldview had just collapsed. However, she still refused to back down as she tried to find a way to justify what she'd done."Even… Even if you are a shoo-in for Kingswell University, that doesn't prove you didn't tamper with Lucian's score!"Celine gritted her teeth, her voice trembling."Maybe… Maybe you lowered Lucian's score on purpose just to humiliate him. You could've used your family's connections to do it! You've done things like this before. You've always been jealous of Lucian!"I almost laughed at her audacity. That was the female lead for them. She could still use her bizarre logic to find a wa

The admissions officer entered my information. My entire student record appeared on the screen the very next second."Name: Evander Holloway""Admitted to: Kingswell University—Computer Science Honors Program""Admission: Guaranteed admission—35th International Mathematical Olympiad Gold Medalist"Every word was a slap in the face to Lucian and Celine. The livestream chat exploded, with "No way!" and "Holy crap!" flooding the screen."It really is the official website! If that's fake, then I'll eat my keyboard!""An International Mathematical Olympiad gold medal? Holy crap, he's not a lousy student. He's a total genius!""God, this is hilarious! Didn't a certain someone accuse him of forging official documents? How does your face feel now?""Am I the only one who noticed what he did? He'd already earned a guaranteed admission, which means he didn't even need to take the college admissions exam! He really did just score 128 for fun!"The evidence was undeniable.Lucian's leg

The admissions officer walked up to me and handed me an acceptance letter with both hands, her tone respectful and enthusiastic."Congratulations, Evander. "I'm the head of admissions at Kingswell University, and I've come to personally deliver your acceptance letter."The entire crowd fell so silent that one could even hear the rustling of leaves in the wind. The ecstatic smile on Celine's face froze as her jaw dropped open wide enough to fit an egg.Lucian's sobs caught in his throat, ending in a strange hiccup.Linnea rolled her eyes back and nearly fell into a dead faint. The livestream chat went quiet for a second. The livestream chat, which had been filled with a constant stream of insults, suddenly went quiet for a few seconds. Then, the mood began to shift."Whoa… If he really solved it that fast, that's actually impressive.""I'm a math major. All three solutions show higher-level mathematical thinking. There's no way an ordinary high school student could've come up with them!""Wait… did we actually target the wrong person?""No way! He must've memorized the answers in advance! He must've staged this somehow!"Celine stared at the formulas on the ground. She couldn't make much sense of them, but even she could tell something was off.She just refused to face the facts. She couldn't believe that the boy she'd defended for three years was a complete idiot, and she certainly couldn't believe that Evander, who had spent all those years chasing after her, was a genius."You… You must've memorized the answers in advance!" Celine forced herself to say. "That doesn't prove anything! It only
