Chapter 1

After I got out of the ICU, I was moved to a regular hospital room. My childhood friend, Mark Beckett, came to visit me every day, chattering nonstop in my ear.

He said that Alyssa Reinhart was a snake—pure evil. Not only did she not save me, but she didn't even bother to visit while I was in the ICU. Instead, she was off on vacation overseas with her old flame.

Lying in bed, I was really confused. 'Who the hell is Alyssa? Is she some new idol from a reality show? Why don't I remember a single thing about her?'

"Come on, Connor. Are you seriously telling me you have amnesia? Do you at least remember who I am?" Mark stared at me, worried.

"Get out of here! I don't have amnesia. I remember everything. It's just this girlfriend you keep talking about—the one I am supposedly head over heels for, Alyssa—I don't have the faintest memory of her."

Shocked, Mark called the doctor to run more tests. In the end, they confirmed it was real amnesia—selective amnesia.

I had selectively forgotten the most intense pain in my memory, along with the person who caused it.

"Eh, maybe it's for the best. Forget her. Now you can live a normal life."

Mark actually seemed relieved, like the accident had been a blessing in disguise.

"You have no idea. Back then, you were a total lovesick fool. A good-looking guy, sure, but a complete idiot. You let Alyssa walk all over you without a single complaint. To keep her, you'd trail behind her and her old flame like a pathetic dog—a total lost cause."

Listening to Mark's story, I was blown away. Was I really that much of a sucker? Such a lovesick fool that I'd help my girlfriend chase after her old flame?

Suddenly, the hospital door burst open. The sharp, rhythmic click of high heels hit my ears before anything else.

I turned to look, and a delicate, beautiful face came into view. Big eyes, bold red lips, loose, wavy hair naturally spilling over her shoulders. So stunning I couldn't look away.

I was mesmerized. Now this—this was the kind of woman I could see myself being lovesick over.

But before my racing heart could even get started, she walked straight up to me, raised her hand, and slapped me across the face. The sound rang out like a bell, drowning out the whole room.

"Connor!"

Her pretty face twisted into something ugly. Her eyes locked onto mine, and her shrill voice seemed to fill the entire floor.

"You coward! You pathetic coward! What, you got a little hurt? And that useless friend of yours had to blow up my phone every day, begging me to come see you? And now, you're pretending to have amnesia? Well, you're not dead yet, are you? You could've at least died before calling me here!"

Then she jabbed her index finger into my forehead and shoved me hard back onto the bed.

The stitches on my waist hadn't healed yet. With that kind of force, blood started seeping through the bandages.

I let out a low groan, gritted my teeth against the pain, and looked up at this woman who'd appeared out of nowhere. Totally baffled, I asked, "Who are you?"

She seemed shocked. She let out a scoff of disbelief.

"Keep pretending. Keep it up. I just went overseas to celebrate Dylan's birthday. Is that really worth you acting like you're dying, Connor?"

Judging by her reaction and the way Mark had shrunk back into the corner like a bystander, it finally clicked. So this was Alyssa—the one Mark had been talking about.

The girlfriend who pushed me, her actual boyfriend, into a fire to save her old flame, then didn't look back. The one who was vacationing overseas with her old flame while I was in the emergency room.

I couldn't help but laugh coldly. At first, yeah, I was drawn to her looks. She was the kind of woman who'd make your heart skip a beat if you saw her on the street.

But then, she opened her mouth. Then, she raised her hand. And that good first impression went straight out the window.

I didn't see some stunning, captivating beauty anymore. I just saw a low-class, trashy bully. Every bit of that initial attraction vanished on the spot.

"Miss, I really don't know you. I think you've got the wrong person. If you keep acting crazy like this, don't blame me for having security escort you out."

My voice was cold. I stopped looking at her. But she didn't seem willing to let it go. She grabbed my collar and yanked me up again.

She leaned in close, her tone softening, almost like she was trying to sound sweet.

"Connor, you used to love it when I hit you and yelled at you. What's wrong with you now? Are you actually mad? I told you before—Dylan is just an old friend from school. There's nothing going on between us. I just went to celebrate his birthday. You're the one I've always loved."

I could hardly believe it. Something this insane, and it was happening right in front of me."Why would he do that? I thought he and Alyssa were in love," I said."For money. Dylan knew that as long as Alyssa stayed with you, she'd always have money. So he kept stringing her along. Even that request for Dylan to become the company's financial advisor—that was his idea too. He never loved Alyssa. He loved your money," Mark explained. It was a bombshell. I was completely stunned."Right now, Alyssa has been committed to a psychiatric hospital. Dylan was sentenced to prison for manufacturing unknown drugs to control another person's mind."Hearing that, I fell silent.I thought that if Alyssa didn't love me, fine—we'd just break up. But I never imagined she'd end up locked away in a mental institution.Everything had seemed so calm on the surface. But underneath, there had been this huge danger lurking the whole time.I held Jasmine's hand by her hospital bed and sank into my thou

"Jasmine!"By the time anyone could react, Jasmine was already on the floor, blood pouring from her abdomen. I rushed over and pulled her into my arms."Jasmine! Are you okay?"Jasmine was in agony, her face turning pale. She slowly reached up and touched my cheek."Don't… cry… I'm… okay…" She forced out a weak smile. "Your grandfather… gave me one more… assignment…"Her voice was so faint, so broken, that I had to press my ear to her lips to hear what she was saying."Jasmine… just hold on…" My heart was clenched tight, aching. I wished I could take that knife for her."Call an ambulance!" I roared at Alyssa and Dylan.Alyssa had calmed down by then, completely stunned. She immediately took out her phone and dialed 911."Con… nor…" Jasmine whispered my name as tears slipped from the corners of her eyes. "Tell your grandfather… I'm sorry… I couldn't… drag you back… to marry…"Her hand slid off my face. She lost consciousness."NO!!!"The ambulance arrived quickly. Jasmine w

I didn't fully understand what Jasmine meant by that, but when I looked into her eyes, I thought I saw it anyway.I caught a glimpse of something there—hope and excitement."Your grandfather is still complaining that you spend all your time messing around instead of giving him a grandkid to play with. And now, you're breaking up? You're just going to upset him even more.""I don't love her anymore." The words came out fast, loud, and certain, echoing through the office. And right at that moment, Alyssa and Dylan appeared in the doorway. Alyssa stared at me in disbelief."What did you say? Connor, say it again. Who don't you love anymore?"I used to let Alyssa play me like a puppet. I looked the other way while she strung me and Dylan along, because I loved her down to my bones. But not anymore. I was finally awake. My heart should go to someone who deserved it—not someone who trampled on it for fun."Alyssa, I should have told you a long time ago. The way I used to spoil you di

"I want to bring Dylan on board as our company's financial advisor. He's about to get his PhD, and I really think he's up for it," Alyssa said.No ulterior motive, my foot. I was speechless. What kind of twisted logic makes someone ask their ex-boyfriend to hire their current boyfriend?I just smiled and didn't say anything. Alyssa looked at me expectantly."Okay, I got it. You can leave now."Alyssa thought I'd agreed. She happily came over, stood on her tiptoes, and planted a kiss on my cheek."Love you."Her whisper lingered in my ear, and then she was gone, strutting out of my office in her sky-high heels."Unbelievable."My fists clenched. This was disgusting.I ran into the bathroom in the break room and scrubbed her lipstick off my face, over and over.I looked at myself in the mirror—furious. And then, the memories I'd buried for a while started playing back in my head like scenes from a movie.Last night, I had a dream. I dreamed I was trapped in a fire, burning ali

She handles everything related to my inheritance.Back in the day, I cut ties with my family because I didn't want to take over the family business. I started my own company after college.Jasmine had called me several times on my father's behalf, urging me to come home. I turned her down every time. This time, I needed someone I could trust to get back the shares of my company that Alyssa had taken. And no one was better suited for that than Jasmine."No, I've told you before. I'm not taking a single cent from my family. There's something else important I need your help with."Jasmine let out a soft laugh and didn't press further. She's the one person in the world who just gets me. I didn't want to waste any more breath on them. I quietly told them to leave. But only Dylan heard me. Alyssa was too worked up—she just stared at me like she wanted me dead."Connor, don't kick her out. If you're angry, just hit me instead!"Dylan seemed to know exactly what he was doing. As long as he played the victim, Alyssa would come to his defense. So he lunged at me, grabbed my hand, and tried to make me hit him."What the hell are you doing?"This was insane. I tried to pull my hand away, but Dylan held on tight."Connor, if you promise not to blame Alyssa, you can hit me, yell at me—I'll take it!"Dylan pulled me away from Alyssa, creating some distance between us. And in the middle of all the tugging, he shot me a smug little grin. Then he let go of my hand and threw himself down the stairs.Alyssa snapped out of her rage and came running down after him."Dylan!"Dylan tumbled to the bottom. There was blood on his head. He looked up at me with a pitiful expression a
