Chapter 4

Author: Shell Flower
"You're resigning? Has Ms. Seinfeld agreed to let you do so?" my superior asked.

"By the way, you won't get much of a bonus for this month if you resign now. I'll transfer the rest of your salary to your account."

I frowned. There was too much information, and it took me a while to process everything my superior said.

What did she mean by transferring it to my account? Since when did I receive bonuses?

More importantly, why had she mentioned Tessa?

When my superior saw how confused I looked, she looked equally puzzled.

"Aren't you dating Ms. Seinfeld? She was the one who gave the finance department special instructions to pay you your salary separately.

"You were given your basic salary, but any bonuses and salary increments were put in a different account. She said you needed to save money.

"I didn't expect you to still be so frugal with someone like Ms. Seinfeld as your girlfriend. That's rare to see."

That was why I had only received my starting salary for so many years.

I had requested again and again for an increase in my salary, to no avail. It turned out that it wasn't because I wasn't diligent enough at my job. It was because Tessa had transferred all of it to a different account.

When I went to the finance department to request my payroll records, I saw "two thousand dollars" written in bold letters in the box that indicated the amount of my expected bonus.

A few days ago, I had been one day late in paying the hospital because I had been scrambling to find the last two thousand dollars that I needed.

As a result, my mother passed away before she could get her operation.

What was even more laughable was that the total amount of the bonuses I should have received over the past seven years, which Tessa had withheld, would have been more than enough to treat my mother's condition.

I had been a complete fool.

I had been so foolish that all I had done was to work hard. I had been terrified of being fired and losing my means of making a living.

I had been such a fool that I had not realized Tessa's deception.

I had never spent her money so that she wouldn't think of me as a leech, but she had been the one who had transferred away all the fruits of my labor.

I had actually persisted for seven years in a relationship that was full of nothing but lies and humiliation.

I was on my way to find Tessa with my payroll records so that I could settle the score with her when she strutted up to me.

"Ethan, all we had was a minor argument, and you left home? You even resigned! I think you're becoming more and more hot-tempered."

Zeke was behind her, looking gleeful at my discomfiture.

He walked over and said insincerely, "Ethan, you really have no conscience at all. You spent Tess' money and lived in the place that she rented for you. Without her, could you even survive in Jetland?"

He was so thick-skinned that he could lie with a straight face.

I laughed out of sheer anger. I was about to defend myself when Tessa interrupted me.

"Zeke's right. If I hadn't been around for the past seven years, you'd have starved to death long ago. I'll just think of today as you throwing a tantrum, and you can have the day off. Come home with me. I won't dock your pay for not going to work today."

The more I saw Tessa's true colors, the more I wondered how blind I had been over the past seven years.

People around me began to point and mutter amongst themselves. Since Tessa did not stop them, their voices became louder.

"Ms. Seinfeld hid her identity because she didn't want Ethan to feel insecure. She also told us to keep it a secret, which shows just how much she cares about him."

"He lives off Ms. Seinfeld, and yet he's losing his temper with her?"

"If he wants to go from rags to riches, he should reflect on whether or not he's capable of doing so. He'd be nothing without Ms. Seinfeld."

The more the people around us speculated, the more triumphant Tessa was.

Zeke kept egging them on and heaped a pile of false accusations on me. "Ethan, didn't you lie because you wanted two thousand dollars from Tess? You even said that your mother was about to die and needed the money to survive."

"I truly do love you. I can give you everything that you want," Tessa said.Shannon was still standing in front of me, looking disdainful."Ms. Seinfeld, I know a little about what went on between the two of you. I never mentioned it because I didn't want to hurt Ethan."But if you really did love him, you wouldn't be wondering all the time about whether or not he was a leech. Even if someone deliberately sowed discord between you, the auction proved that you don't love him."When I give him presents, I never ask for anything in return. I just want him to be happy, and I don't mind how much I spend on him. I just want him to smile upon receiving the gift."You can't even do that. Money means too much to you. If you like someone, you would want to give them the best. But you can't even do that."Every single thing that Shannon had said seemed to hit Tessa in the chest like a sledgehammer. When Tessa saw me holding Shannon's hand tightly, she knew I would never return to her again.

Shannon always stuttered when she was nervous."Alright. I'll wear my favorite clothes tomorrow. Don't overthink it, and I won't either."…Early the next morning, I clapped a hand to my forehead and smiled wryly when I looked at my wardrobe, which was filled with clothes that Shannon had given me. Which one was her favorite?I tried to recall her reactions to my outfits whenever she gave me a present, but I couldn't settle on any. She seemed to only care about whether or not I liked her presents. After three hours, I finally made up my mind. I wore an elegant, pale blue shirt which went very well with the watch that she had given me. Shannon had been planning to pick me up, but I declined. I wanted to go on my own and give her a surprise. I wanted to show her through my actions that I liked every single one of her presents very much. However, I unexpectedly caught sight of Tessa when I was about to enter the estate. I tried to leave quickly, but she grabbed my wrist.I st

Once I was done with my report, I was served a grilled cheese sandwich.Halfway through my meal, Shannon smiled and asked, "Are you full now?"I would always slow down while eating if I was feeling stuffed.Since she had made it for me, I would finish it. Even if I were full, I would eat it slowly. "Stop eating if you're already full. You'll feel ill if you eat too much."I laughed out loud as I bit into my sandwich. "Shannon, can you read my mind? You understand me so well.""I can't help it. What you feel is written all over your face, and you're so guileless. It's impossible for me not to know."Was I guileless? It was the first time someone had described me that way. Tessa had always thought of me as a calculative leech. If I were the way Shannon described me, why had Tessa never cared about how I felt over all those years?Shannon noticed that I looked rather upset, so she asked quickly, "What's the matter? Did I say something wrong?"I smiled and shook my head as I

I would be lying if I said that I wasn't touched. Shannon was so busy that she could have just come up with an excuse to get rid of me. I got changed and went to the fish pond with Shannon."Your fish pond is about five acres in size, and you should maintain the depth of the water at about eight feet. You'll need roughly two thousand pounds of quicklime for each acre to disinfect the pond. However, the pond isn't deep enough for you to raise fish."I took out a notebook and nodded as I recorded everything down. I asked quickly, "Are there any requirements for the kind of fish I should get?"Shannon thought for a moment before answering. "Generally, fish ponds of this scale should have 2000 carp, 1500 breams, and about 20 silver carp. "Since you're just starting out, you can raise fish that are more likely to survive. You don't have to worry about getting workers. I'll introduce you to a few experts."As for the premium fishing spot that you're planning to build, you'll have to

I went back to my hometown. I opened the gate to the house where I had once lived with my mother, and where we only had each other. The familiar scent in the air made my eyes fill with tears once more. I hugged my mother's ashes helplessly and crouched down, weeping bitterly.Sorry, Mom. I did not give you a good life.Sorry, Mom. I couldn't get enough money for your operation at the most crucial moment.Sorry, Mom. I didn't get married while you were still alive.…There were so many ways in which I had let my mother down. After I was exhausted from crying, I saw a little stool in the courtyard. There was a smiley face on it, which my mother had drawn for me. It was covered with moss because it had not been used for a long time.I picked it up and walked over to a small stream. I used a brush and began brushing vigorously again and again at the grime on it. Slowly, the smiley face on the stool became more and more discernible. It resembled my mother. I reached out and ge

Zeke said, "Tess, if you hadn't given Ethan a job opportunity, he wouldn't even have been able to stay in Jetland."His mother's dead, but that's no big deal. He won't ever be able to use that as an excuse to get money from you again."If you go after him now, you'll be giving him a chance to lord it over you. I'm a man, and I understand how men work best. Ethan's just guilt-tripping you."Tessa suddenly felt that Zeke seemed like a stranger to her. She knew how accomplished I was. The company had gained incredible market value over the past few years under my leadership. It was Tessa who had been secretly holding me back and oppressing me. Zeke had spoken as if a human life was not worth anything at all. Tessa had been reflecting carefully on our history together. She had never spent a single cent on me, and I had never tried to leech off of her. She realized that, under Zeke's manipulation, every hysterical outburst and all my accusations and explanations had been twisted.
