Chapter 3

Author: Berilli
"Well! If that's what you want, don't blame me for exposing your shame!"

As Jennifer took out her phone to call her mother, I also called Harlan, who was in a meeting out of town, but no one answered.

I had no choice but to send him a message, asking him to come back quickly.

In a short while, Doris arrived at the school.

Jennifer took out a spare key and opened the door for her.

"Mom, don't be afraid! Tell everyone here, is Odelia the third party in your marriage?"

Doris bit her lip lightly, looking weak and helpless.

"Jennifer, just let it go! After all, it's a family matter. Airing our history in public won't do Odelia's reputation any good."

"Mom, she has bullied you, yet you are still thinking about her! She's only so bold in her affair because she thinks you're an easy target. With so many witnesses today, it's time to stand up for you, the rightful wife!"

Doris blinked, a tear escaping the corner of her eye. "I'm just a housewife, while Odelia holds a prestigious position as a vice principal. What can we do to fight against her?"

I couldn't help but chuckle at her ambiguous words.

My gaze was piercing as I bore into her. "Doris, tell the truth. Did you and Harlan ever obtain a marriage certificate?"

Doris, her lips pressed tight, shrank behind Jennifer, her demeanor suggesting I had struck fear into her very soul.

The male teacher, who had defended me moments before, now felt a surge of protectiveness towards Doris.

He pointed an accusing finger at me, his voice firm as he comforted her, "Don't be afraid. You have our support. If you identify Odelia as the mistress, we will collectively bring this to the attention of the authorities and ensure she faces the full extent of the consequences."

A fleeting sparkle of cunning danced in Doris's eyes, quickly replaced by a well of sorrow as she lifted her gaze.

With a dramatic display of despair, she dropped to her knees before me, her tears and snot mingling in a plea. "Mrs. Woolf, I beg of you, have mercy on us!"

This spectacle was a dagger to the hearts of all who witnessed it.

Doris was clearly sidestepping my question, yet the onlookers seemed to interpret her behavior as an admission of my alleged degradation.

Jennifer's voice rose above the murmurs, her arms waving with fervor. "Guys, if we turn a blind eye today, who will stand for us when our time comes? Today, we are the judges of the mistress! For this shameless mistress who wreaks havoc on others' family, we owe it to ourselves to mete out justice!"

Encouraged by Jennifer's impassioned words, the students jumped onto their desks, their chant of "Expel the mistress and make it right" echoing through the hall.

Amidst the turmoil, an anonymous hand hurled a rotten egg in my direction.

Doris, concealed within the crowd, offered me a smirk of triumph as I stood there, befouled and humiliated.

Seizing the opportunity, Jennifer delivered a swift kick to my abdomen.

A bolt of agony shot through me, and I doubled over, a trickle of blood seeping from between my legs.

As the situation became out of control, a handful of male teachers intervened, their presence a wall against the escalating chaos.

The pool of blood beneath me spread, and Jennifer, still just a schoolgirl, was gripped by panic.

"Mrs. Woolf, if you apologize to my mother with a bow and promise to keep away from my father after resigning, I'll consider our scores settled," she said.

I met their gaze with a surge of resentment. "You will pay for this!"

As my words fell, the classroom door burst open, and Harlan, drenched in sweat, rushed in.

"What has happened, Odelia?" he questioned.

Ignoring the ache in my body, I gestured sarcastically towards Jennifer. "Care to explain? Why didn't I know that you had an illegitimate daughter?"

Harlan paused, then, digesting the information, he turned and slapped Jennifer without delay.

"Where are you from, you unruly child? You're so ill-mannered!" he demanded.

I inquired, to which she replied, "She's not been herself lately, often talking to the air."Jennifer's eyes glistened with unshed tears, her voice tinged with melancholy. Our brief exchange was interrupted by a call on Jennifer's phone. I heard a woman's voice."Jennifer, your dad's online, claiming you're not his daughter, and he's suing for defamation!"The news visibly distressed her, prom

The live chat erupted with reactions."The mistress has come clean. It's time to rally against her.""Unbelievable, we've been wronging Mrs. Woolf this whole time!""Is she experiencing a change of heart, stepping forward to face the backlash?"Amidst the intensifying vitriol, Doris offered a woeful smile."I swear, I was completely unaware that he had another family! No woman willingly takes on the scorned role of the mistress. I was deceived by Harlan Woolf!""Naive and young, I was easily persuaded by his words and be with him blindly. I sacrificed my college dreams just to bear his child. We've been together for fifteen years, yet now I'm told that I've been the mistress all along, wreaking havoc on another woman's marriage.""I never intended this; I genuinely didn't realize I was destroying another woman's marriage."Her soul-crushing weeping and desolate demeanor swiftly drew the compassion of numerous online viewers. As she had expected, people began to change their mi

My gaze fell on the imprint of a hand on her cheek, and curiosity flickered within me."Are you addressing me from the standpoint of an illegitimate child? If I'm not mistaken, it's you who's intruding on my family, engaging in brazen and immoral conduct," I retorted. As I spoke, Jennifer's complexion flushed a deep scarlet. The very insults she had hurled at me that day now seemed to press down upon her. With a sneer, I was about to turn and leave, but her voice rang out, halting me in my tracks."I'm not wrong! Don't illegitimate children deserve humanity too? All I've ever wanted was a normal family! My mom was right— the one who isn't loved is the mistress!""Oh, so you take his hitting and scolding as signs of love; is that it? Then Harlan truly does love you both," I replied with a heavy dose of sarcasm.Without another word, I sidestepped her and went upstairs. The next day, as I was about to go to school to cancel my leave, Owen called."Odelia, someone posted the vide

I called the police and filed a report against Jennifer for intentional injury. The authority graded it as a minor, second-degree injury.Consulting with a lawyer, I learned that Jennifer's sentence would be lenient because she was a minor. However, her imprisonment wasn't my goal; that would be a mercy for her.The lawyer warned me that Jennifer's family might seek a lenient sentence, possibly asking for a letter of understanding.True to his words, Doris and Jennifer appeared at my door after my discharge from the hospital a few weeks later, pleading for my forgiveness."Jennifer's just a child; how could you report her to the police?" Doris chided.I didn't know what Harlan might have told Jennifer, but it was clear she persisted in believing I was the mistress."Mom, don't beg her!" Jennifer's voice was laced with disdain. "Her baby was nothing but an illegitimate child who should have never seen the light of day!""Odelia, you can mistreat me all you want, but you can't c

Stunned, Jennifer clutched her face, yelling at Harlan, "Are you really leaving my mom for your mistress?"I scoffed, "With an illegitimate daughter of such an age, you must feel aggrieved that you married me. Harlan Woolf, I want a divorce!"Doris, seeing her child in distress, immediately shielded her."Harlan, how could you strike our daughter to defend this mistress?"The gathered students and teachers glanced at one another, casting uncertain looks between Doris and me.Harlan roared at Doris, "Have you had enough of this madness, you psycho?"Then, softly to me, he urged, "Odelia, let's get you to the hospital. I'll explain everything once you're better."I shrugged off his supportive hand. "I can go to the hospital by myself.
