Chapter 129

Author: Summer Blossom
"Shut up! Not you, too!" Edward exploded. "Are you deliberately rubbing salt into my wounds? Do you want me to have you pack up and leave?" With that, he furiously ended the call.

On the other end of the line, Nathan stared at his phone, his expression blank. His boss had finally realized what he'd taken for granted now that he had lost his wife. But it was too late to do anything about it.

Later that night, even though he knew that he wouldn't be able to see Macie that day, Edward still waited until 10:00 pm outside the office building before reluctantly heading home. Not long after his car pulled away, a figure stepped out from the building's main entrance and made her way toward the subway entrance.

Macie looked at her phone. Tomorrow was the last workday before the weekend. With two days off ahead, she was relieved she wouldn't have to worry about bumping into Edward. Nevertheless, she couldn't avoid him forever. She just hoped he'd stop acting crazy and give up soon.

"Is it true, Macie?" Macie's colleague asked.Around them, others subtly leaned in, clearly eavesdropping while pretending to work.Macie's voice was calm but firm. "Nothing is going on between Mr. Atkins and me. As for everything else, it's personal, and I'd rather not talk about it."That was all the confirmation anyone needed. She had been married. The group exchanged discreet glances, many of them visibly surprised. But it made sense. They thought that Macie was gorgeous and had heard that she graduated from a top university. Someone like that getting married young wasn't hard to imagine. As for her relationship with Julian… Well, no one believed they were completely innocent. Some whispered that he was pursuing he, while others were convinced they were already secretly involved. But no one really knew for sure. Soon, the rumors spread beyond the design department. "You've got the wrong person," Macie said under her breath before attempting to yank her arm away. "I'd never mistake you for someone else! Even if you turned to ashes, I'd still recognize you. If you've got nothing to hide, show me your face!" Edward gritted out. Before she could react, he grabbed both her arms, locking her in place. His grip was so tight that it made her wince, her brows drawing together in pain.Macie tried to break free or use her phone to call the police, but his hold was unrelenting, like iron. Her high heels didn't help either. In the struggle, she lost her balance and stumbled backward. Her back slammed into Edward's chest, and he took the chance to yank off her sunglasses. As soon as their eyes met—hers wide with panic and fury—he knew. There was no doubt about it anymore."You still want to pretend you're not Macie? Why else would you be covering your face like this?" he snapped. He reached for her mask next, but she had already regained her balance. M

Edward had one goal—to get Macie into the car, take her home, and tell her everything he had been holding inside. He wasn't going to let her hide anymore."Let go of me! Let me go!" she yelled as she stumbled along, attempting to wrench herself free. Her nails dug into his skin, leaving red welts on the back of his hand, but his grip didn't loosen at all. His grip was like iron. "What do you think you're doing, you crazy son of a bitch? Let me go, or I'll scream for help!" she threatened, looking around for someone to help."Go ahead! I'm taking my wife home. Let's see who dares to stop me," he growled. The way Edward addressed her made her skin crawl. Macie lifted her leg to kick him in the calf. But with one foot on the ground and the other midair, she lost her balance and pitched forward. The pavement was solid concrete, and it was summer. Her clothes were light, offering no protection. She was going to fall flat on her face. Macie shut her eyes tight and raised her arm to p

It was like someone flipped a switch inside Edward when he heard Macie yell Julian's name. His whole body tensed. He stopped fastening Macie's seatbelt. Instead, he slammed the car door shut and locked it. Then, he turned around and glared at the man approaching.Edward had seen Julian earlier that morning. Now, staring at his face again, it finally clicked. He realized why Julian had looked familiar to him. Julian wasn't a business associate. He was that guy from the college competitions Macie used to enter. Back then, Edward had watched some of her old footage, and this man had been in them... a lot. So, it turned out that this man was Julian. Edward couldn't believe this rotten luck."Mr. Fowler, may I ask why you're—" Julian started to say, frowning as he reached the car. But he never got to finish his sentence as Edward's fist came out of nowhere, slamming into Julian's face with full force. The blow was so sudden and clean that Julian stumbled back and almost lost his balan

Julian was helped to his feet by security. He looked at Macie's anxious, worried expression and managed a strained smile. "I'm fine," he said between breaths. "I can take it."Macie immediately stepped toward him, her hand reaching out to steady him. The way she moved, the care in her eyes, made Edward's blood boil all over again. He tried to shove past the guard. Rage burned through him like wildfire. He was determined to get to that man. He had to tear him apart. "That's him, isn't it? He's the guy you've been in love with all along, right? He's the one you called last time!" he bellowed at Macie, his jealousy boiling over.He suddenly remembered the journal she used to carry everywhere, even after they were married. The one with the high school entries that documented her years of pining over her secret crush. It turned out that it was Julian. It had always been Julian. "Macie, tell me the truth. Did you ever love me? Even just a little?" Edward's voice cracked."I've alrea

"No, I didn't mean that…" Edward shook his head frantically and looked at Macie."Oh? Are you denying your own words now? Should I call Sharon over as a witness?" she shot back coldly."I... That's what I said back then, but I don't mean it now! I don't want you back because I want to hurt you. I—" Edward tried to explain, but by then, the officers had already handcuffed him."I like you!" he blurted out as they led him away. He turned his head, desperate to meet her eyes. Unfortunately, Macie didn't return his gaze. She stood still, her arms stiff at her sides, as though his words never even reached her.Edward was shoved into the back of a patrol car while Macie stood frozen in place, clenching her fists and forcing herself not to look back. She wondered if Edward had lost his mind. She questioned if he had really just said that he liked her. She wanted to laugh. She thought that his words sounded fake. It was almost as if Edward thought that being nice would change her mind ab

Macie turned at the sound of Julian's voice and answered quietly, "I'm sorry, Julian. I'll explain everything to you later."Just then, Yosef looked over at the young man standing beside Macie, noticing the bruises on his face. With a frown, he asked, "Did Edward do that to you?"Julian met the older man's gaze and nodded. "Hello, Mr. Fowler Senior. I'm Julian Atkinson. We met briefly years ago during a competition at Arlington College when you were the sponsoring judge."Yosef studied him more closely. He sensed something familiar about the young man. "Yes, I remember you. You were a very impressive young man. I'm sorry about my grandson. If there's any way I can make this up to you, just say the word.""There's no need, really. Security arrived in time, and I wasn't seriously hurt," Julian responded. "Also, I'll be filing a letter of non-prosecution, so you don't have to worry."Yosef gave the young man another look before he turned to walk toward the interrogation room to bring

Yosef turned to Edward and shot him a sharp glare. He asked, "Well? Aren't you going to give your word?"However, Edward said nothing. His eyes were fixed on the woman standing just a few feet away. Her mask had come off, revealing her flawless, made-up face. She had cut her hair, put on makeup, and dressed in a completely different way. She was even wearing high heels. Back when she was with him, Macie never bothered with her appearance. But now, she was dressing up for that man to win over his favor. He had never realized just how obvious love could be or how brutal the absence of it felt. He clenched his fists, a dull ache twisting deep in his chest. Tears welled up in his eyes. "Don't worry, May. You have my word," Yosef said on Edward's behalf. "He won't bother you again.""I hope you mean that," Macie said, meeting Yosef's eyes. Then, she turned her attention back to the paper and signed her name on the statement. The officer took it, and the case was officially closed.

"Get out of my way! I'm going to a business meeting! If this causes a delay, can you afford to pay the penalty for breach of contract?" Edward snapped viciously. The bodyguards hesitated, doubt flickering on their faces. They wondered if Edward was really headed to a meeting. They questioned when a meeting had ever been that urgent without a heads-up from his assistant."Still not letting me through?" Edward barked again. The bodyguards exchanged looks and decided to follow him just in case."So this is why you've been behaving lately. You're being watched." Sean's mocking voice came through the phone."It's none of your damn business," Edward coldly retorted. "Is Macie hurt?" he asked. In the police station lobby, Sean looked at the woman now standing just outside the main doors and said, "Of course she's hurt. Think about it—your girlfriend sent three men to abduct her.""Sharon is not my girlfriend! Don't disgust me!" Edward snapped. "Is Macie seriously hurt? Where is she hur

Edward froze when he heard Sharon's name. He pressed his lips together and replied over the phone, "No. I have nothing to do with her."The finality of his words made Sharon break down completely, her sobs choking her voice."Yeah, sure. Who would believe that? Weren't you the one who made headlines with her in all those gossip scandals?" Sean sneered.Edward clenched his fists and gritted his teeth, replying weakly, "That was all a misunderstanding.""I don't care whether it was or not. Five million dollars. Transfer it now," Sean said."In your dreams! Whoever caused this incident should pay. Don't come to me like I'm some kind of lapdog!" Edward snapped. "I have nothing to do with Sharon anymore. We're done. Completely."He said it with complete determination, his tone cold and devoid of any emotion. And because the phone was on speaker, Sharon heard every word loud and clear. Her tears flowed even harder."Edward…"Her sobs hung in the air, but Edward's expression remained

Sharon's face turned pale under Sean's intense questioning. She trembled and stammered, "N-No, I didn't. I swear, I never meant for it to go that far. I just wanted to scare Macie into staying away from Edward. How could I do anything illegal? I'm a good person."Sean looked at her. He thought that if she truly were a good person, then everyone else in the world must be evil."Either resolve this with compensation or face it in court. Your choice," Sean said, throwing the decision to her.Sharon couldn't bring herself to say a single word about going to court. She didn't dare to. If Sean were to get involved, she would lose and probably have to pay even more. If he made this situation public, it would ruin her career. There was nothing to gain and everything to lose. After weighing all her options, Sharon clenched her teeth and asked the man, "Can I pay less? I can't come up with five million dollars."She turned on the charm, tears brimming in her eyes as she played the pity card

Sean thought that Edward was truly scum. Alice had said that the one who stirred up trouble that day was Edward's ex-girlfriend—the same woman he had flaunted publicly as his mistress while still married. Now, Macie and Edward were divorced, yet the mistress still showed up in front of the ex-wife, while Edward just stood by and did nothing. Sean really thought that Edward was a piece of trash. Not long after, the officer from the interrogation room emerged again, this time with a few others."Mr. Hart, Ms. Hart, Ms. Smith," he addressed them. "Surveillance footage confirms that the suspect was the first to lay hands on Ms. Smith and made a deliberate attempt to drag her into a car by the roadside. This establishes criminal intent."Also, our investigation confirms that the three men were not the suspect's bodyguards, but were hired by her. They've admitted to receiving payment from the suspect to abduct Ms. Smith."Alice immediately said, "I knew it! Sharon was still making excus

Alice knew that her own injury wasn't even worth mentioning, so she walked over to Macie and tugged up the sleeve of her shirt. She stated, "Look at this. May's arm is going to be all bruised by tomorrow."Sean looked at the woman Alice had pulled over. Her fair, slender arm was covered in several glaring marks. It was evidently caused by someone grabbing her forcefully. His brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.Macie felt uneasy under his stare and quickly pulled her sleeve back down. But the moment she did, Alice yanked it up again and turned toward the officers."Look at this. Does that woman look like she came just to talk things out? If she only wanted to talk, why did she get physical?"The officers glanced at Macie's arm. Just then, Sean's voice cut in, cold and sharp. "My sister and her friend were attacked. I hope your station handles this seriously and doesn't let the perpetrators walk away unpunished."The officers turned to Sean. The man had an overwhelming presence. Eve

"Who could possibly beat you?" Sean asked.Alice snapped, "I'm not joking! Edward's ex-girlfriend ambushed me and May, and she brought three thugs with her! May and I both got hurt! And they ruined my favorite handbag!"Sean furrowed his brow when he heard this. Alice kept going on, full of grievance and rage, until he cut in, saying, "Send me the location of the police station."Alice hung up and saw that the police had already arrived. They had come just in time.Sharon and the three men were all caught. Not a single one got away. The three of them headed to the nearby police station. It was the same one as before. Macie and Julian were already familiar with the place. In the lobby, Alice sent Sean the location. The three gave their statements while Sharon and the men were taken into an interrogation room. When they finished, one of the officers came out to mediate. When Macie heard that Edward had driven Sharon away, she was a little surprised. Alice was even more shocked, but Macie quickly said coldly, "I really did get divorced. He's the one who keeps pestering me. We're going to court next week." She glanced at Sharon. "Once that's over, Edward and I will have nothing to do with each other. Don't believe me? Come to the court yourself."Sharon frowned when she heard that, clearly unconvinced. What if they went to court and the divorce didn't go through? Then she would just end up being played yet again."May's right. She and that scumbag Edward are definitely getting divorced," Alice said mockingly. "You're the only one who still treats him like he's some kind of prize. No one else gives a damn. "You two had better lock it down. When you get married, I'll show up with a gift and wish you all the happiness in the world."Sharon shot Alice a glare. Wasn't this the same woman who had bragged last time that Edward was about to marry her?

Sean couldn't help but think to himself that he'd really gone too far. He wondered how he was any different from the bullies who had tormented Macie. He remembered how Macie had looked that morning with her anger held back, forced to endure his teasing with a fake smile. Meanwhile, he found it amusing, as if it were some kind of game to him.He couldn't believe what a monster he had been.Macie's quiet demeanor was the result of years of enduring suffering, with her anger only surfacing when she was pushed too far.Macie was a young woman with a vintage landscape as her profile picture—someone who had already seen the world's harshness and matured well beyond her years. And all of this was the result of childhood trauma and constant bullying. At this moment, Sean could no longer dismiss what Alice had told him. He fully believed her now. …After returning to her private office downstairs, Alice didn't dare admit to Macie how spineless she had felt. All she could do was firmly

"Stop it right now. Don't bully my friend anymore, or I swear I won't let you off easy," Alice warned. However, Sean didn't even flinch, arrogantly ignoring her threat.Alice was furious, but there was nothing she could do. She wouldn't win if she argued or fought with Sean. He could easily slap her down to the ground, and she wouldn't even be able to get back up. If anyone else had bullied Macie, she would have gone all in, but this person was Sean—her brother, the one who had always pushed her around since they were kids.Alice sighed, moving from anger to helplessness, feeling stuck and useless. She couldn't protect Macie and felt she wasn't a good friend. "Macie has already been through enough. Can't you show a little compassion? Stop bullying an innocent, vulnerable lady!" Alice tried softening her tone. "You don't know how much Macie has suffered. Do you even have an ounce of human decency?" She switched tactics, telling him everything she knew about Macie's past and th
