Chapter 458

Author: Summer Blossom
"Damn it! You never say anything nice," Kaleb teased, grinning.

Xavier looked at Alice. Speaking with the tone of a caring brother, he said, "You stay here and have fun. I'm leaving now. We'll get together with Sean another day."

"I'm leaving too. I've been here long enough, and I need to update him," Alice replied, her smile playful.

Xavier understood her meaning. He finally realized that Sean had forced her to attend that cruise party that evening.

She had mentioned not being allowed to go out alone on weekends and that her brother was strict. Everything she said aligned with Sean's character, but why hadn't Xavier connected the dots earlier?

He felt mixed emotions and thought he must've gotten out on the wrong side of the bed that day. Of course it had to happen right in front of her. He couldn't remember the last time he felt that stupid.

Xavier pushed his thoughts aside and grinned. "Let me give you a ride home," he said.

"No need. I drove myself, but we can head out toget

Edward was still in the detention center. So, Macie didn't know who else would send someone to tail her. And not just anyone, but a woman.Macie's sense that someone was following her was just a hunch for now, since she didn't have solid proof yet. She planned to watch closely during work and after work tomorrow to see if the woman was still following her. If she were, then she'd know for sure.Macie kept walking, and the woman followed her, maintaining just enough distance to avoid suspicion. Sharon was watching Macie closely, waiting for the right moment to make her move. Her gaze never left Macie's hair.Fortunately, Macie wore her hair down that day; loose strands were always easier to grab than neatly tied ponytails. After the train passed four stops, an opportunity knocked. Macie's phone rang, and she answered it, unaware of the shadow inching closer behind her. It was Xavier calling about the court hearing scheduled for the day after tomorrow. He asked if she wanted to atte

Having made up her mind and carefully planned her schedule, Sharon threw on something simple and headed out to withdraw some cash. She needed to get everything done that day so Elias wouldn't doubt her.Toting several thousand in cash, she walked into the director's office at the orphanage. The current director was no longer the one from years ago, but that didn't matter. Sharon wasn't here for a trip down memory lane. She was here for the records. No one could resist the allure of money, especially when it came in the form of a full suitcase packed with crisp bills and dumped unceremoniously on the desk. The director immediately gave in. It didn't take long for him to dig up Sharon's and Macie's files. Sharon watched as he carefully peeled off the photographs from the documents and swapped them—hers for Macie's.Sharon examined the file and stopped at the age section. Her scheme wasn't going to work. Even though she and Macie had entered the orphanage around the same time, she

Elias didn't question Sharon's request. He completely understood. Anyone would have a hard time accepting something like this. Especially after hearing the hurt in her voice, he could tell that she thought they had already given up on her. "Of course. I'll be waiting for your call, whenever you're ready," he said gently.Sharon then hung up the phone. Elias stared at his darkened phone screen, the reflection of his tear-rimmed eyes looking back at him. He had finally found her after 20 years. At last, their family could be whole again. Sharon Emerson… that was the name she went by now. But why Emerson? Then, he remembered that she had only been four when she wandered off and got lost. He figured that she probably had long forgotten her real name… She also mentioned that she had a fever at the time.A vivid image of a poor four-year-old girl formed in his mind, burning with a fever that wouldn't break, erasing most of her memories as she drifted near death. He clutched his chest

"I don't remember much, to be honest. After all, most people can't recall anything before they turn four, and I had a really bad fever afterward, so I remember even less," Sharon responded over the phone.Elias felt his heart sink a little when he heard that. However, he soon perked right up. Compared to memories, DNA was far more reliable. If he could just get a strand of her hair, he could confirm their blood relation.Having made up his mind, Elias was about to suggest meeting up when Sharon's voice came through. "I think I do remember something. I was wearing this beautiful pink princess dress with black lace-trimmed shoes and a pink butterfly clip in my hair. That necklace was on my neck at the time, so I know for sure it's mine."Elias' breath caught in his throat. That outfit… He hurriedly opened the photo gallery on his phone, tapping the wrong folders several times in his haste. In the end, he found a faded print scanned from a film reel and zoomed in to examine it.He loo

Elias was about to press the woman over the phone again when she answered exactly like he had expected. She said, "My name is Sharon Emerson."After hearing that, the glimmer of hope in his chest was snuffed out. He clenched his fists, his expression darkening with rage. "You lied to me! That necklace was never yours. Where did you get it?" he demanded. "You'd better tell me the truth. If you cooperate, not only will I let this go, but I'll even reward you." After hearing those threatening words, Sharon forced herself to stay composed. Reward money? Did he really think she'd settle for that? No, she wanted more, so much more. She wanted status and respect, too.Her eyes narrowed as a bold plan took shape in her mind. "The necklace is mine," she said calmly. "Do you have any proof that it isn't? You're the one who showed up out of nowhere and doubted me. Are you trying to walk away with it for free? "Let me make myself clear—I won't bow to your threats! This necklace is the only

"That's why I wanted to talk to you and find out exactly where the necklace came from. You said you've worn the necklace since you were a child. So, what is your name?" Elias asked on the phone.Lying in bed, Sharon's hands trembled as her carefully spun lie was about to be unraveled. Deep down, she had a feeling that Macie had come from money because from the first time she saw her, the latter looked just like a princess straight out of a fairy tale.Sharon wondered what she could do now. Because of this damn necklace, Macie's family had come knocking. Soon, they would realize that it had never truly belonged to Sharon at all.Guilt made her hands so weak that she could barely grip her phone. Part of her screamed to run—hang up before he learned her name, before Macie found out.But she was indignant. The necklace was worth a hundred million dollars, for crying out loud. Sharon didn't want to give it back. She had already lost Edward, her golden ticket, and now she might end up a
