Chapter 67

Author: Summer Blossom
Nathan fell silent. He wondered if he had just wasted his breath as it seemed like Edward still didn't believe him.

Inside the elevator, Edward's expression remained dark.

He didn't think it mattered that Macie had explained to Nathan back then. After all, she hadn't said it directly to him. Instead, she had told Nathan not to tell him.

Edward felt that Macie could have just called him and cleared the situation up herself if she genuinely thought that he had wronged her.

He had already given her multiple chances to step down from her stubbornness. Would it kill her to take the initiative even once?

Frustrated, Edward drove to the restaurant where he had made a reservation.

Sharon had arrived early and was flipping through the menu.

Although they had argued in the morning, Edward had agreed to have lunch with her without much hesitation.

Sharon took it as a sign that they had no significant issues. She believed that if she kept pushing, she would reignite the love he once had fo

As Macie listened to Julian speak, she felt genuinely happy for him. His long-time dream had finally come true."Speaking of which, I have to thank Macie. She was the one who secured a ten-million-dollar angel investment back then," Julian said, looking at her."May, that's amazing! Why didn't you ever mention it?" Alice exclaimed in surprise."It's because she left to go abroad right after securing the investor. I was deeply touched and even wanted to make her a shareholder, but she disappeared so suddenly." Julian sighed.Macie's mind drifted back to two years ago when she heard this. At that time, she had planned to start a business with Julian. But then fate had dangled another opportunity in front of her—one she had foolishly taken. She had abandoned her career for love, only to become a caged housekeeper."Angel investment? May, how did you end up as a shareholder? Do you get dividends, too?" Alice asked, catching onto the crucial detail."Later, the angel investment turned

At the restaurant's entrance, Edward confirmed his reservation, and the waiter led him to his table. As he walked, he absentmindedly turned his head, scanning the room. His steps briefly faltered. His gaze locked onto a woman at a nearby booth. But just as he focused his sight, she lifted a menu, obscuring her face. For a split second, he could have sworn that he saw Macie. As he followed the waiter, he kept looking in that direction. Just as he was about to glimpse her profile, a large pillar blocked his view. When he looked again, he could only see the back of her head.He saw that the woman had short hair. With that, he concluded that it wasn't Macie and she had long hair. Moreover, he assumed that she was still in the hospital. So, there was no way that she could be there.Edward finally withdrew his gaze, expressionless. He figured that he must have been seeing things.Or perhaps he was just too fixated on her. She had blocked him, and he had spent the entire morning sulking

A smirk tugged at Sharon's lips as she plotted in her mind. The main course arrived, but Edward barely ate. Instead, he finished nearly an entire bottle of red wine. When a second bottle was opened, the alcohol began taking effect."No more, Sharon. I still have work this afternoon," Edward said, moving his glass away to stop her from refilling it."You seem stressed. I'm guessing that work has been overwhelming. A little wine and a nap in your office will help you feel refreshed," Sharon gently coaxed.Edward listened, though his bad mood wasn't because of work. It was because of Macie. She still hadn't reached out to him and wasn't answering his calls. It frustrated and enraged him, leaving him restless. In the end, he placed the glass back on the table and nudged it toward Sharon. She poured him another drink.Meanwhile, Macie and her friends had finished with their meals. Julian paid the bill as they got up to leave."I need to use the restroom. May, come with me?" Alice as

Edward's brows furrowed even deeper at Alice's words. He sternly clarified, "Ms. Hart, please watch your words. Don't make baseless accusations."Alice found his reaction amusing. "Oh? Then why are you two holding hands? I even saw the trending news this morning."Edward glanced down, realizing that Sharon had linked arms with him. He immediately shook her off.Sharon nearly ground her teeth in frustration, though she kept a smile on her face. Nevertheless, she shot a glare at Alice, the troublemaker who was stirring things up."Trending news is nothing but rumors, Ms. Hart. You shouldn't believe everything you read online," Edward said, his tone growing colder.Alice let out a scoff. She thought that Edward was clearly more than just slightly drunk. Otherwise, how else could he say something so self-righteous when the evidence was right in front of him?"Your little sweetheart is wearing the nine-million-dollar necklace, isn't she? Next time, if you want to deny something, at le

A knock on the car window startled Julian. When he looked up and saw Macie, he quickly unlocked the door. But instead of getting into the passenger seat, she hurried into the back, looking visibly flustered."What's wrong? Did something happen?" Julian asked immediately."No. It's nothing…" Macie said, trying to steady her emotions. "Julian, can you start the car? Just drop me off at the next intersection."Julian, though puzzled, started the engine. As he turned the corner, he spotted Alice walking into the plaza with a man and woman beside her. He recognized the man as Edward Fowler.Glancing at the rearview mirror, Julian noticed that Macie wasn't even seated properly. She was crouched low in the back seat, hiding.Alice had already come out, so why was Macie acting like she was fleeing? Who was she avoiding?"Macie, are you hiding from someone?" Julian asked."I—" Macie was about to answer when Julian added, "The only people with Alice were Edward and that woman. Are you—

Edward obediently followed Sharon and got into the cab.Meanwhile, at the next intersection, Macie declined Julian's offer to tour the company in advance, opting to wait for Alice instead. When the red sports car pulled up, she quickly got in."You're unbelievable, May! When I mentioned Julian, you acted like you wanted nothing to do with him, but then you happily hopped into his car just to talk to him longer," Alice teased.Macie had no words to defend herself. Bracing herself, she explained, "It was only for a few minutes. We barely had time to say anything.""Yeah, but that's enough time to sneak in a few kisses." Alice smirked.Macie fell silent."Come on, spill. What did you two talk about? If you don't tell me, I'll just make up my own version," Alice pressed. With a helpless smile, Macie sighed. "I swear, we only talked about work."The two women bickered playfully on the way home. The cab stopped outside a luxury hotel. Sharon helped Edward toward the entrance, but he

Nathan observed Edward closely. He said, "You don't seem drunk at all. You still recognized me."Edward had clearly meant to call Macie but had dialed Nathan instead."He's definitely drunk," Sharon insisted. "Otherwise, would he sit on the roadside with no regard for his image?"Nathan glanced at her and immediately saw through her intentions. If she took Edward home, he would be done for.Stepping in firmly, Nathan stated, "Mr. Fowler is perfectly sober. He has two international meetings this afternoon. He can't afford to take the day off."Sharon opened her mouth and was about to suggest postponing the meetings, but Nathan cut her off."These are multi-billion-dollar deals. Are you willing to take responsibility for any delays? Can you handle that?"Sharon fell silent.Multi-billion-dollar deals? If Edward sobered up later and realized she had dragged him home instead, she would be finished.Left with no choice, she watched in frustration as Nathan took Edward away. She sto

Caught in his own contradictions, Edward wrestled internally, torn between frustration and self-inflicted torment. In the end, anger won out. His face darkened as he wiped the coffee spill from his lips."Macie sure has grown some nerve. Four days in a row with this attitude. Has she forgotten who she is?" Edward scoffed under his breath. "With that temper, any other family would've kicked her out long ago. She has no family background and still doesn't know how to hold on to her place as Mrs. Fowler."If she won't even open her mouth to talk properly, what's the point of having one? This was all her fault, yet she acts like the whole world owes her something."Nathan, standing nearby, silently observed Edward, who had now fully transformed into a bitter, complaining husband. His lips twitched as he stared at the ceiling, barely restraining his disbelief.Every word Edward spoke was full of resentment and disdain. Yet, this was the same man who had spent his entire drunken afterno

Macie quickly adjusted her expression and tried to look perfectly calm, as if nothing was wrong. Then she gave a soft, polite smile."Just tell the truth," Sean said casually. "Even if you say that you dropped it down the toilet, I won't hold it against you."Macie was at a loss for words. She thought that Sean's intuition was rather scary and wondered if she should tell the truth or come up with a half-decent lie and roll with it."Did you actually drop it in the toilet?" Alice asked, peering over at her friend. "It's fine. It wasn't like you did it on purpose."Macie looked at her, then glanced at Sean. He sat there with a look that made it clear he wasn't letting this go until she gave him something—anything. And lying risked getting caught, which would be worse."It's… somewhere safe," she said, her smile stiff. "There's no need to worry about it ending up in the wrong hands.""Be specific," Sean replied flatly.Macie sighed. "It's in a trash can. No one's going to go diggi

"I'm your sister, and May is my friend. That's not the same thing," Alice muttered, shooting Sean a look of disbelief.Sean was so used to teasing her that now he was treating her friends the same way. He was just piling on the torment. He went straight for verbal jabs with Alice, but with Macie? It was all sly teasing and "playful" provocation.Macie listened to Sean's excuse and honestly agreed with Alice's rebuttal. She wasn't part of the Hart family. Sean was acting way too familiar with her, especially considering that he'd misjudged her at the start and stormed off like some arrogant tyrant.Facing Alice's complaint, Sean calmly offered his version of logic. "Well, she's your friend, so I'm treating her like a sister, too. There's no need for formalities."His one remark silenced Macie and Alice. The two exchanged a glance, momentarily at a loss for words.Macie thought that Sean was perhaps being too informal. After all, they weren't related by blood.Alice also found it

Sean felt wrongfully accused. He was completely exasperated and at a loss for words. "I'm not blaming Macie for anything. It was just a simple question, really," he said, trying to explain himself.Every time he said something, Macie always replied with such polite, measured courtesy that even when he didn't mean anything by it, she'd still apologize first."What's the point of asking if you didn't care?" Alice snorted.Sean fell silent. He really hadn't meant anything by it, but now it felt like he couldn't explain himself out of it, no matter what he said."I wasn't blaming you. Don't take it the wrong way," Sean turned to Macie and added calmly."And just like on that call, what I said wasn't a curse. It was a medical suggestion. That's all."Macie gave a slight nod. She hadn't actually been offended. She hadn't felt attacked, either. However, when it came to dealing with Sean, it was always safer to err on the side of caution. Admitting fault first gave him no room to twist h

Macie, Alice, and Sean didn't speak as they ate. The only sounds in the room came from the soft clinking of silverware against porcelain plates.Macie kept her head down, quietly enjoying the meal. The restaurant was expensive, but the food was worth it. Everything tasted amazing.Focused on her plate, she was completely immersed in the flavors. Across from her, Sean occasionally glanced up. His eyes drifted in her direction as he quietly observed her.Macie ate with poise and grace—an elegance that spoke volumes about her upbringing or self-discipline.Her speech was polished, and her manners were impeccable. She didn't fall short of the refinement you'd expect from someone raised in a wealthy family.Sean remembered Alice mentioning that Macie was an orphan, which made her self-taught etiquette and professionalism all the more significant. Moreover, she'd gotten into Arlington College, unlike Alice, who'd gone the arts route.Macie was undeniably sharp. She was off-the-charts

Macie looked at Alice with gratitude in her eyes. The latter had practically voiced everything Macie was thinking. She wanted to nod along so badly, but held it back, keeping her composure while mentally agreeing with her friend wholeheartedly."She wouldn't say it to my face, but she sure had a lot to say behind my back," Sean said lightly as he shot Macie a sideways glance.Macie said nothing. It had been one of those classic moments. She thought that she was venting safely behind his back, only to get caught in the act by the very person she'd been talking about. She had already known that he was aware since last week, but now that he brought it up again, she couldn't help but feel a little awkward. However, the awkwardness only lasted a few seconds. She knew that Sean could be a real menace sometimes. He had a whole track record of being impossible."You mean she can't call you out to your face, and now she can't even vent about you behind your back?" Alice shot back at Sean

The waiter had already taken their order and left. Alice turned to Macie with a half-guilty look. She said, "May, you really didn't have to splurge like this. Taking Sean to some casual diner would've been totally fine."Macie thought that something too casual wouldn't exactly suit Sean's stature. He was the CEO of Hart Group, after all. The man had done her a huge favor. If she invited him somewhere cheap and cheerful, she'd risk him calling her out for being stingy.Macie had always kept a respectful distance from Sean as he wasn't someone she could afford to offend. When it came to speaking with him or even the smallest gesture, she made sure to tread carefully, never leaving room for him to mock or twist her words."Mr. Hart has helped me a lot. A proper thank-you is the least I can do. Choosing a nice place is just a way to show my sincerity," she explained to Alice.Alice replied, "See? This is what I mean. You're always so meticulous. It's almost too much."Across from the

Edward scrolled through the photos, but when he saw that the man in the driver's seat wasn't Julian, he froze. The photo had been taken from an angle that caught the driver's side profile. Edward thought that the man looked vaguely familiar, but he couldn't quite place him.He wondered who this guy was. He didn't know where he had suddenly come from.He kept scrolling, hoping for a clearer shot, but there wasn't even a proper back view, let alone a front-facing one. He couldn't identify the man at all.Immediately, he grabbed his phone and made a call. The moment it connected, his voice was sharp with irritation as he said, "Are you trying to lose your job? What the hell is this? I'm paying you, and this is what you send me? You can't even get one clear shot of his face?"The person on the other end of the call, clearly unfazed by Edward's anger, replied evenly, "We just wanted to flag this for you because the man seen with the target today hasn't appeared before. He picked her up

"Macie is indeed fair-skinned," Sean said casually.Macie was so fair that she practically glowed. He found himself thinking that she was like fine porcelain or a wisp of cloud."I told you! Even Sean agrees with me," Alice chimed in smugly.Macie gave her a polite smile, and the two kept chatting as the car rolled to a stop at the restaurant.Sean parked in the private parking lot, and the three of them took the elevator up. A hostess guided them to the private dining room they'd reserved.Meanwhile, two men in plain clothes stood idly near the curb across the street, glancing toward the restaurant's front doors. The place looked clearly high-end, so they didn't dare enter without an invitation. They pulled out their phone to check, and as they had expected, the restaurant only accepted guests with reservations. Walk-ins weren't allowed, which meant that there was no way they were getting in that day. That left them with no choice. Since they couldn't get close, they pulled up

Alice couldn't take it anymore. She thought that Sean was seriously the worst. She couldn't understand why he would pick on women like it was a sport. What kind of talent was that? But before she could jump back in, Macie had already devised the perfect comeback. She smiled softly and said, "Mr. Hart, your charm doesn't come from your outfit. It comes from you. So, whether it's today or any other day, it all works."Sean's lips twitched up. He was unable to hide the grin. He didn't always mind a little flattery, especially when it was delivered like that. Honestly, it put him in a pretty damn good mood.Alice gave Macie a thumbs-up from the front seat. "That was a ten out of ten. You handled his question perfectly."Sean glanced at Macie. "Get in before you roast out there."Relieved the teasing had finally stopped, Macie opened the back door and slipped inside. The engine started, and the AC inside the car was blasting. Within moments, Macie felt a wave of cool relief wash over
