Chapter 10

Author: Bright Lights
I stared at the distance on the navigation screen, my heart pounding. Twenty more minutes passed before I finally spotted Naomi's car.

I slapped the back of the seat. "That one! The white car up ahead, on the left!"

The officer didn't hesitate. She swerved over and cut them off, forcing the car to a stop.

Through the glass, I saw Naomi's expression flicker.

I didn't stop to think about it. I jumped out of the police car and ran straight to hers. Grabbing a rock from the roadside, I smashed

When the money ran out, I was ready to sell the house, but Naomi stopped me. "What if Willow really is gone? If you sell the house, how are we supposed to live? Caleb's still so young. What about him?""I can't think about that right now," I said. "Willow comes first."In the end, I didn't sell the house. Willow was brought home that same day by someone from a nearby fishing town. I used to think we were lucky. Now, I knew that Naomi had planned all of it.My vision went red, and I hit her again. The officer stepped in only after the blow landed. "Mr. Gilbert, calm down. Don't interfere with the investigation." They pulled me out of the room.Naomi and Katherine were convicted of trafficking Willow and sentenced to five years in prison. The day the verdict came down, Caleb lashed out at me, kicking and hitting. "This is all your fault! Now we can't sell Willow, and Mom and Grandma are in jail!"I didn't hold back and slapped him. After that, I divorced Naomi and arran

Grabbing a rock from the roadside, I smashed the window and looked inside.Willow wasn't there."Where is she?!" The words burst out of me as I turned on Naomi and Katherine.Caleb flinched and buried his face in Katherine's arms.Neither of them said a word. The officers came over, showed their badges, and ordered them out of the car, but they didn't move. Just as everything fell silent, I heard a faint sound from the trunk. My chest tightened as I ran to the back and smashed the rear window. It took effort to force it open. Whe

Naomi let out a light laugh. "Mom saw all the other parents waiting outside the test center and insisted we stay, too. She wants us to be the first people Willow sees when she comes out. We probably won't be home for a while."I almost laughed. Before, I would have taken that at face value. Now, I realized most of what I knew about Katherine "spoiling" Willow had come through Naomi. If I didn't know the truth, I would have believed her without hesitation. I might have even been touched by it. But now that I knew it was all a lie, I didn't bother saying anything else. I gave Naomi a few absent-minded replies and ended the call. The moment the line went dead, I looked at the officers. "My daughter might be in danger."If Naomi and Katherine knew Willow was planning to harm them, they wouldn't just sit around. Besides, Katherine had already said she intended to marry Willow off after the SAT for money. Naomi's story about waiting outside the test center didn't hold up. They

Katherine said softly, "It's my fault. Willow insisted on climbing somewhere high today. I told her not to, but she wouldn't listen. I thought if she fell once, she'd learn it was dangerous and stop. So I let her climb. I didn't expect her to fall onto the mop and hurt her back."All afternoon, she cried and said I hit her, said she hated me. But I didn't touch her. I raised her from when she was a baby. I would never hit her."I had rushed to comfort her. "I believe you. Kids that age say things. Don't let it get to you."She still looked shaken. "If I'd known, I never would've let her climb."I kept reassuring her. "You didn't do anything wrong. This is on me. I heard what Willow said and jumped to conclusions. I shouldn't have confronted you like that. I'm sorry."After that, we let it go.Willow came to me a few more times, saying Katherine had hit her. I scolded her for making things up, and eventually, she stopped coming to me. I thought she had grown out of that phase.

After explaining, I took the box down and opened it for the officers. The moment the lid came off, I froze. Every piece of gold jewelry Katherine had given Willow was blackened and rusted. It wasn't gold at all, just cheap metal sprayed with a gold finish. All those gifts had been fake.A memory surfaced. It was the day Katherine had given Willow the jewelry."Every woman should have a little jewelry of her own. You never know when it'll come in handy."It was old-fashioned advice, but I had never doubted how much she loved Willow. And yet, every piece she had given Willow was fake.If that was true, then…Something clicked. I grabbed my phone and pulled up the surveillance footage from the past two days. Willow had been in such a good mood that I assumed she had given up on harming us, so I hadn't checked the feed. What I saw made my stomach drop.On the screen, Katherine walked into Willow's room with a warm, gentle smile, carrying a healthy snack. The door closed, a

The psychologist followed up right away and asked if Naomi and I had turned down any of Willow's requests recently.Naomi didn't hesitate. "No. With the SAT coming up, we've been giving her whatever she wants."I started to agree, then stopped. Two weeks ago, Willow had asked me for money to travel abroad. We were comfortable, but not enough to fund a trip like that on a whim. With the SAT so close, it wasn't the right time, so I refused.I told the psychologist, and he responded almost immediately. "That's likely the trigger. At her age, she doesn't fully understand how hard it is to earn money. If her peers have something, she expects to have it, too. When that expectation isn't met, it can create strong resentment."We had our answer, but it didn't bring any relief. If anything, it made it worse. I couldn't believe that Willow would kill our entire family over something as simple as not getting money for a trip.I felt a flicker of disappointment toward her, but thinkin
