Camilla

I heard the front door bang somewhere below. I tried to peek from the top of the stairs, but couldn’t see anything. I walked to the window at the end of the hallway overlooking the main gate and saw a car whoosh out into the dark. I stood there a second longer than I needed to. Ignoring why I was concerned that Rowan rushed out of the house at this hour. Shaking my head, I walked toward Luz’s room.

I don’t care where he is going. Is he meeting someone? I don’t care!

CamillaI heard the front door bang somewhere below. Shaking my head, I walked toward Luz’s room.I don’t care where he is going. Is he meeting someone? I don’t care! The light was still on, low, the night light Elsa keeps going because Luz won’t admit she still wants it. I saw her tangled in her Barbie blanket. She was on her side, one hand holding on to her stuffed rabbit for dear life. I could see her fighting her sleep. I knew she was waiting for me. She always waited for me.I smiled and walked towards her bed. “Mija,” I whispered, sitting on the edge of the bed. “You awake?”“Yes. Hmm. I am awake.” She blinked her eyes, trying to open them wide.I tried to hide my smile, b

  • Wife for Hire   Chapter 13

RowanI was at the kitchen table working when I heard footsteps coming my way. Camila.I was up early at six today, as I had a meeting. I like to be prepared, even if that isn't what most CEOs do. They rely on someone to do their work; I like to do my work on my terms. I generally worked from my office but somehow walked to the dining table.Camila stopped in the doorway when she saw me. She looked a bit stunned but covered it quickly. Her shoulder squared, and she looked me in the eye. We held the contact for a second, and I went back to my papers."You're up early," she said. She was wearing a powder blue dress I hadn't seen yet, a bit worn but professional enough. The dress looked great on her. I ignored the thought and filed it away."So are you," I replied without looking up from the papers. She crossed to the fridge, pulled a bottle of water, gulped it, then came to the dining table. We occupied opposite ends of the kitchen in silence that had too much in it to be comfortable an

  • Wife for Hire   Chapter 12

CamillaI fell asleep around 2 o'clock, still going through that conversation again and again, like a Ferris wheel going around with the same music. My alarm blared at five. I set it because it was the first day of my second job. My eyes blinked, coming to sense of my surroundings. Soon I remembered why this room felt too big, too unfamiliar, too not mine.Married. Contract. Nine days until a hearing that could determine the next several years of Luz's life. Rowan.I got up, and the weight of everything settled on my heart again. After getting ready, I walked into the kitchen, knowing it had come to life with Elsa running around and ordering the staff with only her eyes."Good morning, Mrs. Blackwood," Elsa greeted me with a slight surprise in her eyes. "Good morning, Elsa. Hmm... can you please wake Luz up in an hour or so just for today? I have an early shift at my second job and need to get there in like 10 minutes." I said, feeling guilty that she had to pick up my slack. "I wil

  • Wife for Hire   Chapter 11

Rowan Why did you marry me? The real reason, please.I looked at her for a moment, unsure. I knew why, and I knew why not, and I had decided it since the day I saw those words. My jaw set, and I put my hands into fists so that I wouldn't burn the world for what happened to my family because...no.I saw my father's handwriting. Not the words themselves. Not at first, just the shape of them. The ends of his sentences would lean more angled towards the right when he was writing something he didn't want to write. I found the journal among his possessions three months after burying him, and I hadn't opened it for over a year. Touching it meant opening it, and opening it meant being able to do nothing because he was already gone.Marco sat across from me today. He lied to my face with the same composure he's used for six years.Camilla wasn't going to get the truth tonight. She wasn't going to get it for a long time. She will learn everything when I ruin her the way her father ruined my

CamillaLeaning back against the window, Danny slunk over and slid a plate towards me, with more of a flourish than necessary considering he'd only been asked for a burger joint."So." He cocked his head towards the window, then towards the car sitting half a block away, then back to me, too casually. "That story that was flying around... That article on all the sites: Billionaire, secret wedding, mystery bride. You don't suppose that mystery bride could be someone who just so happens to grill burgers a couple days a week at the grill line?""I don't know what you're talking about.""You're the world's worst liar, Reyes." He grinned, not pushing, just enjoying himself. "You could've told a guy you married into money instead of letting me find out from my mom's F******k feed. I'm not saying I know anything. I'm saying the math is doing a lot of interesting things in my head right now, and I'd hate for it to land somewhere embarrassing for both of us.""The math should stop doing things.

Rowan I didn't sleep well. That wasn't unusual on its own. I've run this company on five hours a night for most of the last decade, but the reason behind it was replaying a conversation I'd already had once in my head. Standing in that kitchen the night before, watching Camila's face go from anger to something colder and more controlled once I'd handed her a justification instead of an apology.Low-income family. Demonstrated pattern. I'd heard the words leave my mouth in real time and understood, even as I said them, that I was reaching for the nearest available weapon rather than saying anything close to what I actually meant. I don't know what I actually meant because I have thought exactly the same thing about her family for a decade. Then why did it bother me when I said the same to her? That's the part I hadn't managed to work out by the time I gave up trying to sleep around four.I hadn't gotten as far as fixing it before morning arrived instead. The dining room was already s
