Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
Although my mind was fixated on the alimony, it didn't stop me from calling out to the housekeeper. "Mary, prepare two more dishes for dinner."

When the lavish dinner was served, I took a piece of honey-glazed ham steak and placed it in my money tree's… no, Chris' plate. In a concerned tone, I asked, "Have you decided on which school you're going to?"

He lowered his head and hummed in acknowledgment, "Mmhmm".

"Which grade will you be in?"

"Junior year."

"Any problem keeping up with your schoolwork?"

His spoon stopped in midair.

"I'm doing fine."

I served him another spoonful of greens.

"It's getting cooler out. We have a thicker comforter in the wardrobe in the guest room."

Chris didn't reply, nor did he look up. All he did was focus on the food on his plate.

Shane didn't say anything either.

Like father, like son—they were both equally quiet.

After dinner, the dishes were cleared away, and I opened the refrigerator to look for fruit. I cut them up into even slices and arranged them neatly on a plate.

Footsteps stopped behind me.

"Aren't you going to ask me anything? Doesn't it bother you that he cheated on you?"

Chris' voice sounded raspy.

I cut an orange into eight wedges and arranged them on the white ceramic plate.

"That's between you two. I only have to go along with whatever Mr. Zimmer has decided."

"You really don't care? Not even a little?"

I turned off the tap and dried my hand on the hand towel, laughing cheerfully.

"Listen, kid. Your dad and I are in a contract marriage."

I hung the hand towel back on its hook and smiled meaningfully.

I continued, "It'd be considered a breach of contract if I cared too much."

Chris fell silent as he studied my expression.

As I was leaving the kitchen with the fruit platter, I spotted Shane standing at the kitchen entrance.

From that day on, Shane came home less often.

When Mary asked how many people she should cook for, I told her just two.

No one found it strange that the lady of the house was getting along with her husband's illegitimate son while he was away.

On Friday afternoon, Charles Turner, the lawyer I'd contacted, sent me a document.

"Mrs. Zimmer, this is the initial draft of the evidence list for the divorce proceedings. Please have a look."

I scrolled through it.

The seventh piece of evidence on the list stated, "The husband concealed the existence of a child outside the marriage, constituting serious marital misconduct."

"Aunt Wendy."

Upon hearing Chris' voice, I quietly closed the document.

He was standing by the balcony, gazing intently at me. "What were you looking at?"

I put my phone face down.

"Just work."

He didn't move.

"You're lying. After you married Shane, he's been paying for everything. Since when have you been working? Aunt Wendy, are you divorcing Shane because of me? You can't divorce him."

"Why not?" I asked.

Turning his back toward me, he said in a lowered voice, "Because…"

That brat! He'd left me hanging! How could he just walk off without explaining?

The next morning, Chris woke up early. He watched me when I sat on the couch, flipping through some documents.

When I got up to pour myself a glass of water, he followed me and stood in the kitchen doorway..

Then, he followed me back to the couch.

Finally, I closed my laptop.

"Chris, what's gotten into you?"

He didn't retort. Instead, he repeated what he'd said the night before. "You can't divorce Shane."

I stared at him. "Wasn't that the whole point? You wanted me to find out he cheated on me, and you wanted to destroy our marriage?"

His lips pressed into a thin line. "That's true, but…"

"Then why are you stopping me from getting the divorce?"

He lowered his eyes and fell silent.

I went to the study and closed the door, shutting him out.

Five minutes later, he slipped a piece of paper under the door. It was folded in half, torn out of his school notebook.

He'd pressed so hard while writing that the pen had torn through the paper in two places.

Chris had worn the same clothes for two days. It was badly wrinkled now. From where I stood, I could see the back of his neck and his shoulder blades trembling beneath the fabric.Shane said, "Your mom left you in my care before she passed away. I failed to take good care of you. I'm sorry."Chris didn't turn around. His shoulders heaved once and relaxed.Gazing at the headstone, Shane continued, "Also, the money you've received over the years isn't from me. Your mother enlisted the help of a trust company when she was still around to transfer the money to you every month on the 15th. She said it was a little gesture from her as a mother, not the Zimmer family." Chris didn't budge. He stayed crouched there, like a tree bent over by a storm. After a long time, he said in a hoarse voice, "…Shane."His back sagged, as if saying Shane's name had lifted the weight he'd been carrying for eight years.Shane patted his shoulder. "Let's go home."On the drive back, Chris leaned agains

Chris stood rooted to the spot. Through clenched teeth, he hissed, "I don't believe you. You're lying."Shane pressed his lips into a thin line and said nothing.I sighed and walked to the cabinet. I opened the bottom drawer, and there was the old photo album. I took it out and placed it on the coffee table.Chris stared at it. His voice trembled as he said, "That belonged to my mom."He reached out, pausing when his fingertip touched the cover. As he flipped open the album, there was the faded Polaroid showing the woman's side profile and the baby in her arms, with the old apartment as the background. He gently ran his finger along the edges of the photo. He continued flipping through the album. On the last page, there was a letter.I peeked at it. It was Anne's letter to Chris just before she passed away.He took a long time reading it. When he looked up again, his eyes were red.Shane sat up straighter.Chris said in a low voice, "My mom said you're the only one who's in

Tracing the rim of his glass with his finger, Leo drawled, "He's part of the family too. He's been out there long enough. It's about time he returns home."I looked up.Leo was smiling gently, but his smile sent a chill down my spine. The moment he said that, everyone turned to look. Some sipped their drinks; others exchanged glances.Ivan, who'd passed away at a young age, had an illegitimate son. That news spread like wildfire among the guests.Shane set his utensils down. He was about to speak when I put my napkin aside and chuckled."You sure are well-informed, Uncle Leo. Chris is still young. His education comes first. There's no need to rush to bring him back into the family."Leo's smile froze.I met his eyes. "On the other hand, you've been so kind to Chris over the years. We appreciate the thought."He turned to look at me. He was still smiling, but his eyes gleamed dangerously. After a few seconds, he picked up his glass and downed it as punishment."You're too kin

I turned and entered the kitchen.20 minutes later, I set a plate of cookies on the coffee table in front of Chris. They were fresh out of the oven, piping hot and smelling of delicious butter. He looked from the cookies to me. "Wendy, you…"Before he could finish, I picked up my coffee and looked out the window. "Try it. I didn't put much sugar."He picked up a cookie and took a bite. Lowering his head, he took another bite.He didn't say a word.Suddenly, his eyes reddened. He turned away and pretended to look at the birch tree outside the window.I put my cup down."Chris."He hummed in response. His voice sounded thick."From now on, let me know if there's anything you'd like to eat."He didn't answer. Instead, he took another cookie and slowly munched on it.That afternoon, he curled up on the couch. His bag had slid off onto the floor.I went upstairs for a blanket. When I came back down, he was already asleep.17. What a wonderful age to be. I draped the blanket

Chris wrote, "I'm not Shane's son. You don't have to divorce him. If you stay, at least you won't have to worry about money. My mom refused to return to the Zimmer family back then. Later, she got sick and didn't have money for the treatment. Shane annoys me, but I don't want to hurt you."I clutched the piece of paper tightly and stood there for some time. When I opened the door, Chris was still waiting in the hallway."Your mom…" I began. He said, "She didn't demand to be acknowledged, refused the money offered to her, and stayed out of my father's marriage. She thought she could raise me without any of that. Then she got sick and couldn't pay the medical bills. Still, she said she didn't blame anyone for it." When Shane returned, I called out to him."Shane."He paused."About Chris' mother…" I said. There was no moon that night. The light from through the door gap shone on him, blurring his features.I asked, "What exactly happened?"Chris is Ivan's son," he said emotio
