Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
After a brief inner struggle, I couldn't help but remind him. "You do remember you have to pay me double the alimony as stated in the agreement, right?"

He gazed at me, his expression dark.

I waited for several seconds. Feeling the weird tension in the air, I turned on my heels and fled upstairs.

Closing the door, I leaned against it and looked up at the ceiling light.

After we got married, Shane was so frequently on business trips that he wasn't home most of the time.

I thought our marriage was as pure as a blank page. It turned out he had already found his true love and even had a son with her.

I scrolled through my phone and opened my banking app. In the transaction history, there was a ten-million-dollar transfer from before the wedding. Doubled, that came to 20 million.

I'd only found out about his son now that the boy was 17. That clearly counted as a scam, no?

It wasn't too much for me to demand another five million dollars, was it?

It was 1:00 am, and I tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep.

After giving it much thought, I scrolled through my contacts and found Larry Barnes' number.

He was a lawyer whose number I saved three years ago when we signed the prenup. His profile picture was a photo of a golden retriever.

I opened the chat and typed and retyped my message several times. When I eventually made up my mind, I sent, "Mr. Barnes, I have a question. If it's inconvenient for you to answer me, you can pretend this conversation never happened."

Larry replied almost immediately, "Please, go ahead."

What a dedicated lawyer.

I chose my words carefully before typing, "Suppose my friend's husband had a child before they got married and kept her in the dark…"

"Okay."

"Wouldn't that count as withholding important information? Say their prenup included a clause where the husband would owe her double the alimony if he had another lover. Would that clause be enforceable?"

"Could you tell me what exactly your friend's agreement stipulates?"

I stared at the screen. I couldn't tell him I was the party involved, and I couldn't give him any more details either. If the legal community of Javensburg were to hear of this situation involving a certain "Mrs. Zimmer", I'd die of embarrassment.

I typed, "My friend didn't sign a written agreement. Her husband just promised he'd accept a divorce without a penny to his name if he had an affair."

That sounded fake, even to me.

Larry took a long time to reply. "Your friend is… quite trusting."

I had no comeback for that.

"Mr. Barnes, that's not the point. I want to know what kind of compensation she could get in this situation."

My fingers hovered above the screen. 20 million dollars… or maybe 25 million dollars would do.

However gorgeous Shane was, his looks paled in comparison to money.

I continued, "It'd be great if she could get twice the amount of the alimony."

"Is there evidence that the husband has admitted that the child is his?"

I remembered Chris' face and what Shane said previously. He'd said he would take care of it. He didn't deny that Chris was his son.

Did that count as a confession?

I typed, "She said her husband didn't deny it. Does that count?"

"A verbal confession can be taken into account, but it's much better if there's a recording, chat history, or a witness."

"A witness… Do I count as a witness?"

I pressed my phone heavily onto the bed.

Five seconds later, the screen lit up.

Larry replied, "Mrs. Zimmer, I'm not in a position to take up a case involving the Zimmer family, but I can refer you to a colleague who specializes in family law."

I was so mortified by my own stupidity that I laughed.

I busied myself contacting several lawyers for the next two days, asking about the divorce. Just then, Chris showed up again.

I was sitting at the dining table, swirling a glass of wine, when I heard the front door open.

Shane walked in first, with Chris behind him.

Shane pulled out a chair. "Chris has transferred to a school nearby. He'll be staying with us while the paperwork is being processed."

I gasped inwardly. Shane just brought his illegitimate son home, right out in the open. It wouldn't be long before his true love came knocking on the door and demanded to be acknowledged, would it?

I must proceed with the divorce!

Shane was silent for a moment. Then, he suddenly smiled. At night, Chris was reading a book on the couch, a half-eaten bag of chips lying by his feet.Shane came out of the study with a document. The document was A4-sized, and its front page was blank. He walked to the coffee table and placed it before Chris.Chris looked up. Shooting Shane a confused look, he flipped to the first page.I was going downstairs for a glass of water. As I passed by the couch, I stole a glance at the document. The title was in bold. Chris had worn the same clothes for two days. It was badly wrinkled now. From where I stood, I could see the back of his neck and his shoulder blades trembling beneath the fabric.Shane said, "Your mom left you in my care before she passed away. I failed to take good care of you. I'm sorry."Chris didn't turn around. His shoulders heaved once and relaxed.Gazing at the headstone, Shane continued, "Also, the money you've received over the years isn't from me. Your mother enlisted the help of a trust company when she was still around to transfer the money to you every month on the 15th. She said it was a little gesture from her as a mother, not the Zimmer family." Chris didn't budge. He stayed crouched there, like a tree bent over by a storm. After a long time, he said in a hoarse voice, "…Shane."His back sagged, as if saying Shane's name had lifted the weight he'd been carrying for eight years.Shane patted his shoulder. "Let's go home."On the drive back, Chris leaned agains

Chris stood rooted to the spot. Through clenched teeth, he hissed, "I don't believe you. You're lying."Shane pressed his lips into a thin line and said nothing.I sighed and walked to the cabinet. I opened the bottom drawer, and there was the old photo album. I took it out and placed it on the coffee table.Chris stared at it. His voice trembled as he said, "That belonged to my mom."He reached out, pausing when his fingertip touched the cover. As he flipped open the album, there was the faded Polaroid showing the woman's side profile and the baby in her arms, with the old apartment as the background. He gently ran his finger along the edges of the photo. He continued flipping through the album. On the last page, there was a letter.I peeked at it. It was Anne's letter to Chris just before she passed away.He took a long time reading it. When he looked up again, his eyes were red.Shane sat up straighter.Chris said in a low voice, "My mom said you're the only one who's in

Tracing the rim of his glass with his finger, Leo drawled, "He's part of the family too. He's been out there long enough. It's about time he returns home."I looked up.Leo was smiling gently, but his smile sent a chill down my spine. The moment he said that, everyone turned to look. Some sipped their drinks; others exchanged glances.Ivan, who'd passed away at a young age, had an illegitimate son. That news spread like wildfire among the guests.Shane set his utensils down. He was about to speak when I put my napkin aside and chuckled."You sure are well-informed, Uncle Leo. Chris is still young. His education comes first. There's no need to rush to bring him back into the family."Leo's smile froze.I met his eyes. "On the other hand, you've been so kind to Chris over the years. We appreciate the thought."He turned to look at me. He was still smiling, but his eyes gleamed dangerously. After a few seconds, he picked up his glass and downed it as punishment."You're too kin

I turned and entered the kitchen.20 minutes later, I set a plate of cookies on the coffee table in front of Chris. They were fresh out of the oven, piping hot and smelling of delicious butter. He looked from the cookies to me. "Wendy, you…"Before he could finish, I picked up my coffee and looked out the window. "Try it. I didn't put much sugar."He picked up a cookie and took a bite. Lowering his head, he took another bite.He didn't say a word.Suddenly, his eyes reddened. He turned away and pretended to look at the birch tree outside the window.I put my cup down."Chris."He hummed in response. His voice sounded thick."From now on, let me know if there's anything you'd like to eat."He didn't answer. Instead, he took another cookie and slowly munched on it.That afternoon, he curled up on the couch. His bag had slid off onto the floor.I went upstairs for a blanket. When I came back down, he was already asleep.17. What a wonderful age to be. I draped the blanket

Chris wrote, "I'm not Shane's son. You don't have to divorce him. If you stay, at least you won't have to worry about money. My mom refused to return to the Zimmer family back then. Later, she got sick and didn't have money for the treatment. Shane annoys me, but I don't want to hurt you."I clutched the piece of paper tightly and stood there for some time. When I opened the door, Chris was still waiting in the hallway."Your mom…" I began. He said, "She didn't demand to be acknowledged, refused the money offered to her, and stayed out of my father's marriage. She thought she could raise me without any of that. Then she got sick and couldn't pay the medical bills. Still, she said she didn't blame anyone for it." When Shane returned, I called out to him."Shane."He paused."About Chris' mother…" I said. There was no moon that night. The light from through the door gap shone on him, blurring his features.I asked, "What exactly happened?"Chris is Ivan's son," he said emotio
