Chapter 1

By the time I came back to my senses, Henry Milford had already shot a modified compound bow straight through my mother-in-law’s head. The arrow had contained such force that her face was completely unrecognizable. Her clothes were immediately soaked through with blood and filthy water.

The scene quickly descended into chaos while Henry posed flirtatiously for his phone’s front camera. “Oops! I accidentally killed the hostage, but at least I stopped the kidnapping! I’m still the hero!”

He had just committed something utterly outrageous, yet he still acted innocent and carefree. It made my blood boil. I felt it was a complete injustice for my mother-in-law to die like this.

However, when I recalled everything Claire Carter did to me in my past life, my hatred only deepened. There was no need for me to fight for justice on her behalf anymore.

I even wondered what face Claire would make when she found out the one who died was actually her mother.

Just as I was about to leave, Claire, who was supposed to be on a business trip overseas, appeared in front of me. I froze for a moment. In my previous life, she did not come back until nightfall.

Before I could react, she handed me a document. It was a waiver of liability.

“Kevin, even though Henry accidentally killed your mother, he was acting heroically. You should be grateful he gave her a quick death! Otherwise, she might have been tortured by the kidnappers! Sign this waiver.”

Her line of reasoning was the exact same as before.

I did not even bother asking why she came back early. I just looked at her coldly. “Aren’t you going to see her one last time?”

To my surprise, Claire scoffed. “And what would that change? Seeing her won’t bring her back. The dead are gone! We should cherish the living instead. Your mom lived for over 50 or 60 years anyway. She’s had enough. Stop being so petty!”

Petty? Everything she said made my blood boil.

Just as I was about to curse her out, Henry walked over with tears streaming down his face. “Kevin, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I just wanted to save her.”

The moment she saw Henry’s tear-streaked face, Claire’s heart tightened. She wiped his tears away gently, like she was soothing a child, and said, “Henry, you did nothing wrong. At least she wasn’t stabbed to death by the kidnappers. To die at the hands of an angel like you, she must be at peace in the afterlife.”

No, she would rather have been stabbed to death. At least her body and face would be intact.

I rolled my eyes and finally told her the truth. “Claire, the one who died is your mother. Go see her one last time.”

She froze for several seconds before suddenly exploding in rage. “My mom would never go to this kind of low-end market! Only your mom, that money-grubbing peasant, would come here just to snatch discounted groceries!”
