Chapter Twenty-Six

I spend every day by my grandfather's bed and I am there when he opens his eyes four days later. He blinks, looking around confused. “It's okay Grandpa. You're okay!” I tell him, leaning over him to give him a huge hug.

“Cal-” His voice is dry and cracky from lack of use, but his words feel stilted. The doctor waned me that he might have to relearn to speak, just as he will have to learn to walk and move correctly.

“I love you, Grandpa.”

“I- love.. you.”

Tears roll down my face. I lean over to kiss his cheek
