Sungirl's body felt unbearably light in Maya’s trembling arms — light, like life was already slipping away from her.

She lowered her carefully to the floor, her hands sticky with blood. It was hot and thick, and Maya could feel it soaking through her sleeves.

Sungirl’s breathing was shallow. Each inhale rattled like a dying engine. Her mouth quivered, and red trickled from the corner of her lips.

“Why?” Maya’s voice cracked as tears blurred her vision. “Why would you do this? You don’t even know me. You didn’t have to…”

Sungirl blinked slowly, her eyes already starting to lose focus. “Because…” she rasped, “this isn’t life, Maya.”

Maya leaned in, holding her face with both hands.

“I don’t want to live like this anymore,” She whispered. “You’re… strong, Maya. Not like me.”

“No, don’t say that.” Maya’s voice shook. “You’re stronger than me, Sungirl. You’re brave.”

“I’m not going to make it,” Sungirl said, her breath growing thinner. “But… my mom. Help my mom.”

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Thirty Four

Maya reached the corridor split....left or right. Bright had said “right.” But Maya didn’t trust her. After what Desire did? Trusting either of them could be fatal. Without a second thought, Maya turned left and ran. Her lungs burned. Her legs screamed. Her heart pounded like a war drum. And she was very thirsty. But she kept running, weaving through the endless maze of halls, praying that every step took her farther from Nico. Meanwhile..... “Maya! Maya, where are you?” Carlos spun around every time he heard footsteps. His grip on the gun tightened. Every second counted now. He could feel her...she was close. And in pain. Inside, Nico stepped out of the room, blood seeping through the cloth he’d tied around his neck. He staggered, then straightened, rage twisting his face. “Enough of this hide and seek,” he growled. He fumbled in his pocket, pulled out the same device, and pressed a button. A soft beep. Then another. And another. The bombs were live. H

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Thirty Three

Carlos stood outside the shattered glass, gun in one hand, the other clenched into a fist as he paced back and forth. Every second felt like a lifetime. 'Where is Manuel?' His eyes scanned the corners, breath shallow, heart pounding like a war drum. Then....movement. Manuel appeared, breathless, a small, tightly packed device clutched in his hand. Carlos rushed toward him. “The bomb?” Manuel nodded and passed it over. Carlos gripped the device like salvation. “How’s the perimeter?” “Still hot,” Manuel said, eyes sharp. “Nico came prepared. There’s a whole army out there.” Carlos cursed under his breath. “Alright. Step back.” He turned toward the glass wall again. The one Maya had been trapped behind. It looked calm now, but he knew she was there. She had to be there. He raised his voice. “Maya. If you can hear me, step back. Please, move away from the door.” He crouched and carefully placed the small bomb at the base of the glass. Every motion was calcula

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Thirty Two

As the door creaked open, Maya’s heart lurched. Her gaze darted to her gun on the floor, and her blood-slick fingers closed around it. Her hands were trembling, torn and raw from the door, but she forced them to obey. She raised the weapon and fired at Nico. Bang! There was no sound. Just a dull click. Nico ducked, but the dodge was unnecessary. The gun was empty. Her breath hitched. Her eyes flicked to the chamber. No bullets. She’d used them all trying to shoot through the locked door earlier. Her stomach dropped. Nico’s laugh filled the room....low, smug, and chilling. “Aw, princess. Were you trying to kill me?” Maya’s finger kept squeezing the trigger. Useless. Hopeless. But she couldn’t stop. She wanted a miracle. A bang. Anything. Click. Click. Click. Nico strode toward her, undeterred. When he reached her, he grabbed a handful of her hair and yanked her up off the floor. She cried out, pain exploding through her scalp. Her gun clattered to the floor ag

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Thirty One

Inside, Maya’s hands were raw from trying to force the door open. Her shoulder throbbed where she’d slammed into the unmovable frame. Beside her, Star whimpered, clutching Maya’s sleeve, eyes wide and terrified. The gunshots outside sounded like thunder. And then...another sound. A high, slow whistle. It drifted through the silence like a snake in the dark. Maya froze. The whistle turned into a voice. Icy and familiar. "Maaaayaaaaa..." Nico. He was close. Maya's blood ran cold. "Come on, Star!" she hissed, yanking her sister behind her. "We have to move!" Frantic, she scanned the room...there! A narrow, dimly lit hallway, barely noticeable. She bolted toward it, pulling Star with her. Her heart thudded painfully in her chest. But halfway through, she stopped. That sound.... Nico's voice was coming from the same direction. She spun on her heel, dragging Star back. "No...no no no....he’s coming from there!" Another hallway. Another door. They ran. M

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Thirty

Carlos lay still on the cold concrete floor, his heart pounding beneath a mask of unconsciousness. Then he heard a voice say... "We should start beating him before Nico comes. He wants him roughed up," It was from the leader of Nico's loyal men, his voice gravelly and cruel. Carlos’s eyes snapped open. Through his lashes, he saw a boot swinging toward his face. Wrong move. In a blur of speed, Carlos seized the man’s leg mid-air, twisted it hard, and yanked him down. He sprang to his feet, using the man as a shield just as the others opened fire. Bullets tore through the body, but Carlos was already moving. He dropped to a knee, reached beneath his waistband, and drew a silenced pistol. Thwip. Thwip. Thwip. Muffled shots echoed in the room. Four bodies hit the ground, collapsing like puppets with their strings cut. Silence returned. Carlos exhaled, standing over the heap of dead men. He scanned the room—no cameras, no signs of reinforcements yet. He moved quickly

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Twenty Nine

Carlos sat frozen on the other end of the call, every muscle in his body stiff with dread. He heard Nico’s voice....smooth, manipulative, soaked in poison....and something cold slithered through his veins. The venom Nico was feeding Maya about him... it was almost unbearable. But it only deepened Carlos’s belief that he’d done the right thing by confessing everything to her earlier. If he hadn’t, Nico would have sunk his claws in and shattered her trust completely. That thought filled him with a burning rage. And yet, even through the haze of fury, he caught the sharp edges of Maya’s responses. Some of the things she said made his pulse race with fear. She was walking a tightrope in enemy territory, but she hadn’t fallen… she sounded as though she had foolishly fallen into Nico's trap, but she was smarter than that. She had to be smarter than that, right? Then came the voice. Small, fragile, and alone with the enemy. Star. Carlos’s heart cracked open. He could hear her
