Chapter 2

Autor: June Wilder
Zoe grabbed a plate of sliced cake from the table and smashed it against me.

The suit and hairstyle I had put together so carefully for my anniversary with Naomi were now a ridiculous mess.

"You're mean! Don't you bully my dad!" Zoe threw her arms wide in front of Elias, glaring at me like I was the enemy.

"You're just jealous of my dad! You ruined our party! You're a jerk!"

Sticky frosting slid down my collar.

I looked down at myself, then at my daughter's face, guarded and hostile.

The razors I had been swallowing all evening felt like they had finally dropped into my chest, cutting all the way down.

"Zoe, what did you just call him?"

Naomi did not spare a glance at the mess on me.

She pulled Zoe behind her first, then reached out to steady Elias, who looked ready to collapse.

"Wyatt, why are you picking a fight with a child?"

Her expression was cold, her voice full of disappointment. "Elias still hasn't recovered. Do you really have to upset him right now?"

I wiped the frosting off my face. "Ms. Holden, my lawyer will draft the divorce papers and send them to your office. Sign them when you get a chance."

I did not look at any of them again. I turned and walked toward the restaurant exit.

"Wyatt!" Footsteps followed behind me.

My sister, Cassie Raines, and Jay chased me down and blocked me at the entrance.

"Are you done making a scene?" Cassie's voice was sharp.

"Elias is a sick man. Can't you show a little compassion? Naomi gives him some extra attention and you threaten her by bringing up divorce?"

I yanked my hand free.

"Being sick gives him the right to shove his way into someone else's family?"

I looked at her. "Cassie, whose sister are you, exactly?"

Jay let out a cold laugh and stepped in front of my sister.

"Wyatt, I am so sick of this victim act of yours.

"You want to know the truth? When Naomi lost the second baby, there was nothing wrong with it."

My heart dropped as I stared at him.

Cassie's expression changed, and she grabbed for Jay's sleeve.

"Let him talk." I stared at Jay, my voice barely above a rasp.

Jay shook Cassie off and laughed again.

"That baby was perfectly healthy.

"But Elias had just found out his illness meant he could never have children. If you and Naomi had a second baby right then, it would've destroyed him."

He held my gaze. "So, your sister, being the OB-GYN, made sure you both believed there were serious complications and talked Naomi into terminating.

"You only got to marry Naomi back then because Elias went abroad. You already got one kid out of the deal, but that wasn't enough. You wanted another one.

"We were all just protecting Elias. It's your own fault for being so selfish, always trying to compete with him."

A ringing swelled in my ears until it drowned out everything else.

Jay's mouth was still moving, but I could no longer make out his words.

Five years ago, Jay was fired from his job. I was the one who begged Naomi to find him a position at her company.

That day, he grabbed my hand, so grateful that he was nearly in tears. He swore he would always look out for Naomi for me.

I looked at my sister's evasive eyes and felt the acid rising in my stomach.

That was a baby I had spent three months looking forward to, a baby that was also her own flesh and blood.

After Naomi lost it, I blamed myself every single day. She would hold me and tell me gently that we would have another one.

All along, every single one of them had known the truth.

I was the only one, grieving like a fool for a child that had been murdered.

A commotion erupted from the private room. "Elias fainted!"

Naomi came rushing out with Elias slumped against her. Zoe trailed behind them, sobbing so hard that she could barely breathe.

Cassie ran over immediately and helped Naomi carry him out.

When Naomi ran past me, she did not spare me so much as a glance. Her shoulder caught my arm, and since I was already unsteady from the fever, I went down hard on the scorching asphalt.

Blood beaded along my knees.

Naomi's car sped away.

A waitress from the restaurant came out and helped me to my feet. "Sir, I think you're running a really high fever. Can I help you get to a hospital?"

I thanked her politely and declined.

My phone buzzed inside my bag. It was Zoe's kindergarten teacher.

"Mr. Raines, I'm sorry to bother you so late. Zoe left her art portfolio in the classroom, and the school is closing for summer break soon.

"I tried calling her mother and her secondary emergency contact, Mr. Sawyer, but neither of them picked up.

"I had to call you as the third emergency contact. Would you be able to come pick it up tomorrow?"

I went still for a moment, not quite processing what I had just heard. "Ms. Torres, I'm sorry. What number did you say I was?"

  • Wind, Rain, and the Years Between Us   Chapter 10

The day before I left the city, I went back to St. Callen's.A year ago, I had crashed my car on the road leading up to this place and nearly died in the pouring rain. Now, the sky in fall was clear and bright, and sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, falling in patches across the stone steps.I lit a candle at the altar. I did not pray for love or for wealth. I only asked for peace in whatever years I had left.I had barely stepped out of the chapel when I saw Naomi standing at the bottom of the steps. She looked worse than the last time. Her hair was tangled, and she was clutching a red blessed medallion in her fist. The moment she saw me, she staggered up the stairs."Wyatt..." She dropped to her knees in front of me, her voice wrecked. "I got the medallion. You said if I brought it back, you'd forgive me."Her hands were trembling as she held it out to me.I looked at the medallion that had been stained with sweat and dirt."Ms. Holden, you're remembering

I heard about Elias' ending from Cassie. After Naomi cut him off for good, he fled to some rural backwater to hide from the loan sharks. They found him anyway.During a scuffle, he fell down a flight of stairs, broke his leg, and triggered his old condition. He had no money for treatment and no one willing to help. The last anyone heard, he was bedridden in a rented room, surviving on handouts from neighbors."Wyatt, I'm so sorry. I really am. If I hadn't helped them cover up what happened, you never would've gone through all of this."I was watering the succulents on my balcony. The sun was warm on my skin."Dr. Raines," I cut off Cassie's apology. "What's done is done. Going forward, let's just be distant relatives. I'll send you a text on the holidays."The line went quiet for a long time, then came a single bitter sigh."All right. I respect your decision."After I hung up, Ava came out of the kitchen carrying two mugs of warm milk. "Dealing with more of that mess?"

I moved into a studio apartment that Ava had helped me find. It was far from the city center, but it was quiet.Naomi did not come pounding on my door. She found another way into my life instead. Every morning, a breakfast I had apparently loved would appear at the security booth. Every evening, a handwritten letter would be stuffed into my mailbox. She wrote about eating the fondant cake I had left behind, having an allergic reaction to the peanuts in it, and ending up in the emergency room that same night. She wrote about sending Zoe to boarding school because the girl was still calling me a bad man. She wrote about kneeling in front of Dad and Cassie and demanding they answer for what they had done to me.I locked every letter, unopened, in a drawer. I threw every breakfast in the trash.A month later, it was my birthday.Ava booked a quiet restaurant and sat with me while I cut a small cake."Make a wish."Ava lit the candle, her gaze warm.I closed my eyes and clasp

Mr. Gentry did not come alone. When the doorbell rang, Naomi was trying to slide the wedding ring back onto my finger. I pulled my hand away and went to answer the door.Standing outside next to Mr. Gentry in his tailored suit was Ava Lennox. Back in college, Ava was a year ahead of me. We later worked together at a design firm before she moved abroad to start her own company. She happened to be back in the country when I had the accident and recognized me at the hospital."Wyatt."Ava was wearing a simple white blouse and carrying a small thermos bag. She did not ask how my recovery was going. She just held out the bag, as naturally as if she had done it a hundred times before."Butterscotch pudding from that old bakery on the south side. Less sugar, no cinnamon. I know you hate it."I blinked, then took it from her. "Thanks, Ava."Naomi came out of the living room. The moment she saw Ava, her eyes went cold."Who are you?"She strode over to my side and reached for my

The day I was discharged, Naomi drove me home. The house was full of traces Elias had left behind.A pair of dark gray slippers by the front door, a designated mug on the coffee table, and his favorite gardenias on the balcony. Naomi scrambled to shove them all into the trash."Wyatt, those were all things the housekeeper picked up. I'll have everything replaced by tomorrow."I gave them a passing glance. "It's fine. However you'd like to handle it, Ms. Holden."Ms. Holden.Naomi went rigid. She turned to face me, a flash of pain in her eyes. "Wyatt, you used to call me Naomi.""Did I?" I walked over and sat down on the couch, my tone pleasant but detached. "I suppose it'll take some time to adjust."Over the days that followed, Naomi cancelled every engagement and came home on time every evening to be with me. She tried to do what I had apparently done for years and stood in the kitchen making soup. She cut her finger slicing vegetables, rinsed it carelessly, and still b

The coffee cup slipped from Naomi's grip and crashed to the floor. She turned toward the emergency room doors that had just swung shut, unable to believe what she had just heard. She did not know yet that those doors had not only sealed off the doctors who were fighting for my life. They had also sealed off everything between us that could never be taken back. The red light above the emergency room stayed on for seven straight hours. Naomi stood outside the entire time. The blood on her shoe had dried to a dark brown.Cassie was holding my medical chart, her hands shaking so badly that she could barely keep the paper still. "How did this happen... How could he get into an accident..."Her voice cracked. "I just wanted him to be a little more considerate toward Elias..."Dad sat on a bench with his face buried in his hands, sobbing.Naomi stared at the sealed doors, her mind completely blank. She thought about how just a few hours ago, she had sent a voice message accusing
