Edward’s pov

“I don’t know,” I said coldly.

I nodded at her. “Goodbye.”

Then walked past her and through the front doors.

The morning air smacked my face as I approached the awaiting car, my driver standing patiently at its side before he opened up its door for me. He gulped and nodded. “Good Morning sir.”

I nodded back. “Morning, James.”

I got in the back seat and I closed the door.

The car started to pull out of the driveway and I looked out the window one last time.

Charlotte was still looking out the door after the car had driven off.

I sighed and closed my eyes. Something lifted off my chest as we drove off.

It was relief.

As we made our way towards the airport, James looked at me through the mirror.

“First time in weeks you’re leaving town, sir,” he said.

“Yeah,” I said. “And it’s good.”

“You having rough days?” he asked.

“Oh dear, I can’t say. It’s been crazy.”

"Perhaps some different air will help."

“I hope so,” I said.

I leaned back and looked at the window.

Edward’s povI looked around the table. At Gable, who was studying the table like it held the secrets of the universe. At Henshaw, who couldn’t meet my eyes. At the others, their faces were a mixture of discomfort and resolve. Carlson had gotten to them. He’d pre-sold this nonsense.“Is that what this is?” I asked, my voice dangerously quiet. “Is that why you called me in here? To propose we start treating our staff like potential felons?”“We’ve already discussed it, Edward,” Gable said, finally looking up. He sounded tired. “We think it’s a prudent measure. Given the circumstances.”“What circumstances?” I shot back. “The circumstance of a single disputed incident? This is a solution in search of a problem.”“The problem is a lack of accountability!” Carlson’s voice rose, losing its polished edge. “The problem is a culture where certain individuals believe they are above the rules! We are putting structures in place to correct that. The board agrees.”He swept his hand around the ta

Eloise’s povWe both winced, because we recognized that voice. Carlson's grin of triumph faded instantly as if a mask had dropped over his face. He practically jumped away from me.I turned my head. Edward was standing just inside the kitchen, too, his expression frozen, his eyes darting from Carlson's suddenly frozen face to mine. I knew my own face must have been pale, my eyes popping with rage that I couldn't hide. But Carlson recovered faster than either of us did. He straightened his tie needlessly. “Edward,” he said airily. “Was trying to talk to Chef Eloise about her kitchen efficiency. But I've got something vital out on the floor to attend to.”He moved to walk past Edward, but Edward didn’t step aside. He just stood there, blocking the way, staring at the board member.“What kind of issues?” Edward’s voice was calm and deadly.”Oh, you know. Post-incident follow-up. Standard procedure.” Carlson’s smile was straining at the edges. He sidestepped again at last, and this time E

Charlotte’s povI felt my own smile spread, cold and genuine this time. It was perfect—better than perfect. “I love it,” I breathed.“I thought you might,” he said dryly. He pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over the screen. “This is the point of no return, Charlotte. I make this call, and there’s no undoing it. We’re committing a very serious crime.”“Make the call.”He nodded to me and held onto his phone as he started talking. “Yeah. It’s me. I need that document we discussed. The Swiss one. Yeah… No, it needs to be ready by tomorrow. No exceptions.” He listened for a second. “I don’t care how. Just get it done.”He then hung up and sighed. “I’ll need some of your details so I can send it over to my friends who will proof it.”I nodded. “Thank you.”“Now don’t call me again. It will be ready tomorrow and when I’ve seen it as satisfactory I’ll call you.”He stood up. “I have to go to work. I’ll see you later.”I nodded as he walked away.***Eloise’s povThe kitchen was my s

Charlotte’s pov“I don’t know anything about your family Charlotte. Charlotte, be serious,” he hissed, and I could picture him pinching the bridge of his nose. “This is a terrible idea. It’s too dangerous. He’ll find out. He’s the CEO, for Christ’s sake!”“He will be too distracted with all that’s happening,” I said. “And it’s only dangerous if we’re careless. We won’t be. This just makes everything easier. I’ll be on the inside. I can keep an eye on things. I can make sure our… inventory relocation… goes smoothly. I will be the eyes and ears of this operation.”“I’m doing fine on my own,” he said.“Oh come on. I just don’t like feeling left out of things like this. Is that such a crime? Help me out here. Please.”I let the ‘please’ hang there, a tiny hook baited with flattery and feigned vulnerability. He sighed and finally said something. “This is madness. It’s messy and a huge risk for me. Edward finds out I went behind his back to hire his fiancée… my head will be on the block, no

Charlotte’s povI sat at the dining table with Edward as we ate dinner silently. He’d been home for a while now and he hadn’t said a word to me. I sipped my wine and sighed as I couldn’t let it stay like this. I needed to say something.“So,” I began, my voice light, conversational. “How was your day? Anything… interesting happen at the office?”He didn’t even look up. “It was a day. It happened. Nothing to report.”I knew that was a lie. Bryan had already texted me about the board meeting ambush, about Edward’s little white knight routine. The image of him standing up for her, defending her honor, made my skin feel too tight. Yet I couldn’t let him know that I knew about that.“Alright,” I said. “I was hoping for some corporate gossip. It’s so quiet around here.”He just grunted in response, finally stabbing a piece of asparagus.I let another few minutes of painful quiet pass. I needed to pivot. To plant the seed.“All this quiet time has me thinking. I’m a little bored. Maybe… may

Charlotte’s povIt didn’t take long before I got into my car and drove to the Le Marché.I noticed how beautiful the place was. They didn’t just allow anyone in.I parked and got in as I saw him sitting by the window and eating his very soft cake.I slowly walked up to him and stopped at his table. He didn’t look up at first, just frowned at the interruption.“Mr. Carlson?” I said, my voice smooth as glass. He looked up but clearly didn’t recognize me. “Do I know you?”I gave him a thin, cool smile. “Charlotte. Edward’s fiancée.”At that moment, he lost it and sighed. “You can’t be serious. If you’re here to deliver some message from that lovesick puppy, you can save your breath and get lost. I’ve had just about enough of the Bassett family for one lifetime.”I didn’t flinch. I didn’t move. I just kept smiling that cold little smile. “On the contrary, I’m here to ask you something. I just need you to give me your honest answer.”“What question?”I slid in to sit before hun and put my
