Chapter 2

Author: Corn 88
Wesley's POV

Norman had just posted a new update. In the photo, he lay comfortably in the hospital bed that should have been mine. He wore loungewear and was tucked beneath a down comforter.

Curled up in his arms was a puppy he'd just brought home. Moreover, the puppy was wrapped in an imported medical-grade thermal blanket.

I stared at the screen, unable to look away. Even my breathing hitched.

It was the imported medical-grade thermal blanket I'd spent three months trying to get my hands on. I'd bought it for my recovery after surgery. The blanket alone had cost me over two thousand dollars.

The caption read, "Amelia said the puppy gets cold easily, so she stayed up all night getting this blanket ready. It's unbelievably soft. She really gets me."

In an instant, everything I'd brushed off as coincidence came rushing back.

The day before, while packing for the hospital, I'd realized that the imported thermal blanket was missing.

I had searched everywhere in a panic.

Amelia, however, avoided my gaze and casually said the housekeeper had probably put it away in the wrong place. Then, she tossed a few cheap fleece blankets from a department store into my bag instead.

"You're a grown man. Stop making such a big deal out of it," she'd said. "These regular blankets are perfectly fine. You don't need anything fancy."

As it turned out, she hadn't misplaced it. She'd taken something I'd bought for my own recovery and given it to her precious Norman instead, just to pamper him.

To Amelia, my life mattered less than Norman's dog.

Rage and despair crashed over me until the pain in my chest became unbearable.

Suddenly, the taste of blood flooded my mouth. I coughed violently, and blood splattered across my hospital gown.

A nurse making rounds gasped. Her clipboard clattered to the floor, then she yelled, "The patient's in acute heart failure! Move! Get him to the resuscitation room!"

In an instant, the hallway descended into chaos.

The doctor came running. One glance at the monitors was enough to drain the color from his face.

"Acute heart failure with V-fib! His heart rate's dropping too fast! We need to get him to the OR for emergency bypass. Where's his family? Get them in here to sign the consent forms!"

The nurse was sweating bullets. "She was just here. She said she was going to one of the private suites."

"Then go find her!" the doctor barked. "Every minute we lose could cost him his life!"

Several nurses sprinted to the private suite and pounded on the door. They shoved it open, only to find an empty room. Norman was gone, and so was Amelia.

  • Woken up by a Heart Attack   Chapter 9

Wesley's POVBy evening, light snow had begun to fall over Parvain. After I politely declined Emily's offer to come up with me and headed toward my apartment alone, Amelia finally stepped out of hiding. She darted out from behind the hedges and blocked my path. "Wes…"The moment Amelia saw me, tears welled up in her eyes. Without hesitation, she fell to her knees in the snow right in front of me. I stopped, my expression unreadable. There was no surprise and no joy at seeing her again. "Wes, I know I was wrong. I'm sorry…" Amelia said as she looked up at me.Tears ran down her dirty cheeks, indistinguishable from the melting snow. Her hands trembled as she reached into the inner pocket of her coat and pulled out a grimy cloth bundle. Then, she carefully unwrapped it.Inside was a cheap silver lighter and a set of house plans, the paper yellowed and badly creased."I'm bankrupt… This is all I could buy after selling my last necklace."Amelia sobbed uncontrollably, stripp

  • Woken up by a Heart Attack   Chapter 8

Third-Person POVOnce Wesley had recovered, his parents arranged for him to relocate to Parvain, Falveria. He boarded the plane without a second thought. A few months later, his career at the company's Falverian branch had taken off. After he escaped the stifling marriage that had drained him for five years, the exhaustion he'd been carrying simply melted away. He looked healthier, happier, and more alive than ever.On a weekend afternoon, the riverside in Parvain was bathed in warm sunlight, with a gentle breeze drifting off the water. Wesley sat by the river, leading a video meeting with his branch team in fluent Falverian. Beside him, his colleague, Emily Brown, quietly handed him a file. Her admiration and feelings for him were written all over her face. She praised Wesley's business instincts in slightly halting Cielan, and her earnest attempts kept making him laugh. They mapped out the company's strategy for the next quarter, and Wesley made each decision with confi

  • Woken up by a Heart Attack   Chapter 7

Third-Person POVWithout the Bakers' connections and financial backing, Amelia's company came crashing down in less than a week. The banks seized her home and luxury cars. Creditors gathered outside her office every day, waving signs and demanding repayment. On top of that, all of her bank accounts had been frozen. She didn't even have enough money to buy a cup of instant mac and cheese. The fair-weather friends who had once fawned over her, calling her Ms. Price at every opportunity, now avoided her like the plague. With nowhere else to turn, Amelia thought of Norman. She sat alone on a bench at the corner of a street, trying to steel herself.Over the years, she had spent millions of dollars on him. She'd bought him a fully furnished condo downtown and a sports car, and she'd also given him more spending money than she could count. Amelia foolishly believed that growing up together in the same orphanage still counted for something. Even if they'd fallen out, surely Norm

His slippers were gone from the entryway, and the closet held nothing but her clothes.Amelia even rushed into the kitchen, only to find that his favorite ceramic mug was gone. "Wes… Wesley! Where are you?"Panicked, she grabbed her backup phone and called him. Yet, an automated voice answered, "Sorry. The number you have dialed is no longer in service."Even then, Amelia refused to give up. She frantically called Wesley's parents, only to discover they'd both blocked her.She opened their chat and sent a flood of apologies and desperate pleas. But every message failed to deliver. After

Third-Person POVKayla's desperate cries came from the other end of the line. Amelia froze as all the strength left her. Her phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor, the screen shattering on impact. Only then did it finally hit her. She turned and locked her gaze on Norman. The charge nurse's frantic shouts that her phone was switched off flashed through her mind. Then, she remembered Norman wearing her jacket in the hospital garden and how, for a while, he'd slipped a hand into one of its pockets. "So, it was you?" Amelia demanded, her voice trembling. "You knew he was in heart failure. You knew the hospital was desperately trying to reach me."She advanced on Norman, her eyes burning with rage. All at once, Norman's face drained of color. He instinctively backed up, his eyes darting around as he struggled to sound calm. "A-Amy… I don't know what you're talking about. I was with you downstairs the whole time. How could I have known what was happening upstairs?""D

  • Woken up by a Heart Attack   Chapter 4

Wesley's POVMy parents came rushing in, both of them out of breath. The moment Mom saw me lying pale in the bed and hooked up to countless tubes, her knees buckled. She collapsed to the floor, sobbing so hard that she couldn't speak.Dad's face had gone ashen, too. His hands shook so violently that he could barely hold the pen as he signed the emergency consent forms. I'd texted them as soon as the heart attack started, but rush-hour traffic had brought everything to a standstill. In the end, they abandoned the car and ran the last mile to get to me. "It's okay, Wes. We're here now. You're not alone."Listening to Mom's anguished sobs, I finally let myself slip into darkness.…The surgery was grueling. I'd gone into cardiac arrest twice on the operating table because I'd lost too much blood, and both times the doctors warned my parents that I might not survive. But after a brush with death, I pulled through. The bypass surgery was a success, and I walked away with my lif
