Chapter 3

Author: Corn 88
Wesley's POV

The blood loss had made me dizzy, and my vision was getting blurry.

I only found out later that ten minutes before my heart gave out, Norman had turned to Amelia, pale-faced, and said, "Amelia, the smell of disinfectant out there is overwhelming. I feel like I can barely breathe."

She immediately helped him up, worry crossing her features. Without even acknowledging me, she took him downstairs to the garden to get some air.

While I was fighting for my life, all Amelia cared about was Norman—her childhood sweetheart who couldn't even handle the smell of disinfectant.

Third-Person POV

Outside the operating room, the red emergency light glared above the doors. The charge nurse paced anxiously down the hallway, holding the consent forms and critical condition paperwork.

Hospital policy was strict. For a procedure this risky, the doctors needed an immediate family member's signature before they could operate.

If something went wrong without proper authorization, the hospital would be left liable.

"Keep calling! Don't stop until someone answers!" the surgeon in charge shouted from inside.

The nurse repeatedly dialed the number Amelia had left on Wesley's admission forms. But all she heard was the automated message. "Sorry. The person you are trying to reach is unavailable."

Meanwhile, in the garden below, Norman sat on a bench. Amelia slipped off her designer coat and gently draped it around his shoulders, shielding him from the chilly November breeze.

"Feeling any better?" she asked. "Still feeling sick? Do you want me to get you something warm to eat?"

Her tone was nothing like the cold, impatient one she'd used on Wesley moments earlier.

Norman looked down and forced a bitter smile before nodding. "Much better, Amelia. I'm sorry. I hate that my health keeps becoming such a burden.

"Wesley is upstairs waiting for surgery, and here I am taking up your time again. If he knew, he'd probably blame me for it…"

Amelia reached over and gently ruffled his hair. Her expression softened with concern as she said, "Don't overthink it. They won't start the surgery that quickly.

"He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, so he's never been good at handling even the smallest inconvenience.

"Your old injury is what worries me. What if the pain gets so bad that you pass out again, like you did when you were little?"

No sooner had Amelia finished speaking than the phone in the coat pocket began vibrating nonstop.

Norman glanced down and immediately saw the caller ID flashing on the screen—"First General Cardiac Unit".

He knew Amelia better than anyone. He was certain that as long as the hospital couldn't reach her, Wesley would just have to endure the pain a little longer.

He couldn't fathom why Wesley had been handed everything on a silver platter. He had wealth, power, and the legal right to call Amelia his wife.

Meanwhile, Norman had grown up in an orphanage, living off whatever scraps were left behind. He was also forced to remain hidden as nothing more than Amelia's "younger brother".

And yet, all he had done was pretend his old injury had returned, and Amelia had immediately arranged a private hospital suite worth a fortune for him.

To Norman, it proved one thing. Wesley meant nothing to Amelia.

Norman's face gave nothing away as he slipped his hand into the pocket of Amelia's coat. Then, he held down the power button and turned off her phone.

The moment the screen went dark, he acted as though nothing had happened and turned to Amelia.

"Amy, it's windy out here. Can we stay a little longer? Ever since you got married, we haven't had the chance to spend time together like this."

Completely absorbed in caring for the younger man she felt responsible for, Amelia failed to notice anything unusual. She had no idea that while she sat beside him, her husband was fighting for his life upstairs because she could not be reached.

Wesley's POV

Inside the operating room, my consciousness had already begun slipping away.

Meanwhile, the surgeon's expression grew grimmer by the second.

I could feel the blood draining from my body, little by little. An unbearable cold spread through me, as if my entire body had been plunged into freezing water.

The surgeon clenched his jaw and made his decision.

"We can't wait any longer. His blood pressure is down to 50! Activate emergency protocol. If anything happens, I'll take responsibility. Prep anesthesia!" he barked.

Just as they were about to operate without waiting for consent, the doors burst open.

"I'll sign it! Let me sign! I'm his father."

Wesley's POVBy evening, light snow had begun to fall over Parvain. After I politely declined Emily's offer to come up with me and headed toward my apartment alone, Amelia finally stepped out of hiding. She darted out from behind the hedges and blocked my path. "Wes…"The moment Amelia saw me, tears welled up in her eyes. Without hesitation, she fell to her knees in the snow right in front of me. I stopped, my expression unreadable. There was no surprise and no joy at seeing her again. "Wes, I know I was wrong. I'm sorry…" Amelia said as she looked up at me.Tears ran down her dirty cheeks, indistinguishable from the melting snow. Her hands trembled as she reached into the inner pocket of her coat and pulled out a grimy cloth bundle. Then, she carefully unwrapped it.Inside was a cheap silver lighter and a set of house plans, the paper yellowed and badly creased."I'm bankrupt… This is all I could buy after selling my last necklace."Amelia sobbed uncontrollably, stripp

After he escaped the stifling marriage that had drained him for five years, the exhaustion he'd been carrying simply melted away. He looked healthier, happier, and more alive than ever.On a weekend afternoon, the riverside in Parvain was bathed in warm sunlight, with a gentle breeze drifting off the water. Wesley sat by the river, leading a video meeting with his branch team in fluent Falverian. Beside him, his colleague, Emily Brown, quietly handed him a file. Her admiration and feelings for him were written all over her face. She praised Wesley's business instincts in slightly halting Cielan, and her earnest attempts kept making him laugh. They mapped out the company's strategy for the next quarter, and Wesley made each decision with confi

Third-Person POVWithout the Bakers' connections and financial backing, Amelia's company came crashing down in less than a week. The banks seized her home and luxury cars. Creditors gathered outside her office every day, waving signs and demanding repayment. On top of that, all of her bank accounts had been frozen. She didn't even have enough money to buy a cup of instant mac and cheese. The fair-weather friends who had once fawned over her, calling her Ms. Price at every opportunity, now avoided her like the plague. With nowhere else to turn, Amelia thought of Norman. She sat alone on a bench at the corner of a street, trying to steel herself.Over the years, she had spent millions of dollars on him. She'd bought him a fully furnished condo downtown and a sports car, and she'd also given him more spending money than she could count. Amelia foolishly believed that growing up together in the same orphanage still counted for something. Even if they'd fallen out, surely Norm

Third-Person POVKayla's desperate cries came from the other end of the line. Amelia froze as all the strength left her. Her phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor, the screen shattering on impact. Only then did it finally hit her. She turned and locked her gaze on Norman. The charge nurse's frantic shouts that her phone was switched off flashed through her mind. Then, she remembered Norman wearing her jacket in the hospital garden and how, for a while, he'd slipped a hand into one of its pockets. "So, it was you?" Amelia demanded, her voice trembling. "You knew he was in heart failure. You knew the hospital was desperately trying to reach me."She advanced on Norman, her eyes burning with rage. All at once, Norman's face drained of color. He instinctively backed up, his eyes darting around as he struggled to sound calm. "A-Amy… I don't know what you're talking about. I was with you downstairs the whole time. How could I have known what was happening upstairs?""D

  • Woken up by a Heart Attack   Chapter 4

Wesley's POVMy parents came rushing in, both of them out of breath. The moment Mom saw me lying pale in the bed and hooked up to countless tubes, her knees buckled. She collapsed to the floor, sobbing so hard that she couldn't speak.Dad's face had gone ashen, too. His hands shook so violently that he could barely hold the pen as he signed the emergency consent forms. I'd texted them as soon as the heart attack started, but rush-hour traffic had brought everything to a standstill. In the end, they abandoned the car and ran the last mile to get to me. "It's okay, Wes. We're here now. You're not alone."Listening to Mom's anguished sobs, I finally let myself slip into darkness.…The surgery was grueling. I'd gone into cardiac arrest twice on the operating table because I'd lost too much blood, and both times the doctors warned my parents that I might not survive. But after a brush with death, I pulled through. The bypass surgery was a success, and I walked away with my lif
