You belong here.

Principal Luca’s words followed me all the way down the west tower, which was irritating because nothing about Wolf Academy made me feel like I belonged anywhere. By the time I reached the admissions office, my suitcase was still waiting beside the reception desk. The woman behind it barely looked up when I collected it.

“Eastern Residence,” she said. “Second floor. Room Twenty-Seven.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you still standing here?”

I opened my mouth, considered asking whether every employee at this university had been trained to answer questions with more questions, and decided against it. The Eastern Residence stood beyond

a wide courtyard lined with silver-leaved trees. Students crossed the space in groups, laughing, arguing, and carrying boxes toward the dormitories. Every few steps, someone noticed me. A nose twitched or a conversation paused. Eyes followed me. Then, just as quickly, everyone looked away. No insults. No threats. No one told me to leave. They simply behaved as though speaking to me might create a problem they did not want.

My room was smaller than the suites I glimpsed through open doors along the second-floor corridor, but it was not unpleasant. A narrow bed stood beneath the window. There was a desk, a wardrobe, two shelves, and a private bathroom. Someone had placed a stack of textbooks beside a folded campus map. Everything was clean and ready. I set my suitcase on the bed and stared at the books.

History of the Great Clans.

Introduction to Pack Law.

Wolf Psychology.

I picked up the last one and laughed once.

“Of course.”

The sound died quickly in the empty room. Outside my window, students moved across the lawns in bright groups. Some carried sports bags. Others sat beneath the trees, leaning against one another as if they had known each other forever. I pressed my palm against the cool glass. Maybe I should have left when I had the chance. Except Luca had looked at me as though leaving had never been an option.

I unpacked only half my clothes before deciding that sitting alone would make me lose my mind. I changed into jeans, a pale tank top, and an oversized shirt, then picked up the campus map. If I was going to be trapped here for at least one day, I might as well learn where everything was. The academy was enormous. The main building held classrooms, offices, laboratories, and lecture halls. Beyond it stood a glass medical center, a stone library with three connected towers, training arenas, an underground transformation wing, and a stadium large enough to hold thousands. Near the stadium, several wolves were chasing a black-and-white ball across a field. Actual wolves. Playing football.

One of them trapped the ball beneath a paw before another crashed into him, sending both rolling through the grass. The watching students cheered. I stopped beside the fence. A girl near me noticed. She sniffed the air, frowned, and moved several steps away. I pretended not to see. At the library entrance, the door began to close before I could reach it. A hand caught it.

“Careful.”

The girl holding it had curly dark hair, warm gray eyes, and a pile of books pressed against her chest.

“Thanks,” I said.

She looked at me for a second, but unlike the others, she did not wrinkle her nose.

“You’re new, aren’t you?”

“That obvious?”

Her mouth curved into a quick smile. “Only because you still look surprised.”

Before I could ask her name, someone called from inside.

“Anna! Hurry up!”

She glanced over her shoulder.

“Coming!”

Then she looked back at me. “See you around.”

She disappeared between the shelves before I could respond. It was the first normal conversation I had experienced since arriving, and it had lasted less than ten seconds. My first lecture took place in a hall shaped like a small theater. By the time I entered, most seats were occupied. The professor, an older woman with silver hair, checked my temporary card without hesitation.

“Violet,” she said. “Choose any available seat.”

No questions. No surprise. I climbed the steps, aware of dozens of eyes following me. Students shifted bags from empty chairs or stretched their legs into the aisle. Not one of them said I could sit beside them. Near the back, I found a row with three empty seats. I took the middle one. The seats on both sides remained empty for the entire lecture. The professor spoke about the laws governing inter-clan disputes as if my presence were completely ordinary. She even asked me a question.

“What is the difference between authority and power?”

I swallowed as every head turned.

“Power forces obedience,” I said. “Authority makes people choose it.”

For the first time, the professor smiled.

“Exactly.”

A few students looked at me with something other than confusion. Then the lecture ended, and they left without speaking to me. By lunchtime, I was tired of being examined and dismissed. The dining hall was loud enough to make the windows vibrate. Every table seemed full of students talking over one another. I carried my tray through the room, searching for somewhere to sit. At one table, a boy met my eyes and immediately placed his jacket on the empty chair beside him. At another, two girls stopped talking until I walked past. Finally, I found a small table near the windows. Empty, of course. I sat alone while the entire hall moved around me. Nobody laughed at me. Nobody whispered loudly enough for me to hear. Nobody asked who I was. Maybe being ignored hurt more than being hated. I forced myself to eat, although the food had no taste. When I finished, I carried my tray away and walked back toward the residence. The afternoon sun warmed my face, but it did little to ease the cold feeling beneath my ribs. I told myself I had survived one day. Tomorrow could be different. High above the courtyard, behind a dark second-floor window, someone watched me cross the lawn. I never saw the figure. Only the brief flash of golden eyes before the curtain closed.

“Put that book back.”I nearly dropped it. I turned so quickly that the edge of the shelf dug into my shoulder. Isara stood behind me with her arms crossed. Her expression was unreadable.“I wasn’t stealing it.”One of her eyebrows lifted.“You were holding it behind a bookshelf.”“I found it behind a bookshelf.”“That is not the same thing?”“It feels very different from my side.”Her gaze dropped to the book in my hands. Then to the amulet resting against my chest. For the first time since I had met her, Isara looked genuinely unsettled. Only for a second. Then the expression vanished.“Give it to me.”I hesitated.“Why?”“Violet.”That was enough. I handed it over. Isara held the silver book carefully, almost reverently.“Some books are hidden for a reason.”“Then whoever hid this one did a terrible job.”She gave me a long look. I pointed toward the cover.“It has the same symbol as my amulet.”“I can see that.”“So what does it mean?”Silence. Of course. I was beginning to think

The message arrived during breakfast.Principal Luca would like to see you in his office at nine. That was it. No explanation. I stared at my phone. Anna noticed immediately."What's wrong?""Luca wants to see me."Her eyebrows rose."Oh.""Why does everyone say oh like that?"She laughed. "Did you do something?""I entered his forbidden garden, walked through two Alpha auras, and stole papers from two angry Alphas.""When you put it like that...""Not helping."At exactly nine, I knocked on Luca's door."Come in."He sat behind his desk, looking annoyingly calm."You wanted to see me?""I did. Sit."I obeyed."Am I in trouble?""No.""That's exactly what people say before explaining why you're in trouble."Amusement appeared in his eyes."You're not in trouble, Violet.""Not even for the garden?""No.""The courtyard?""No."I relaxed."Amazing. I'm doing better than I thought."Luca closed the folder in front of him."The academy library needs another student assistant.""Okay.""I'

Something had changed in architecture class. For the first time since arriving at Wolf Academy, I noticed it before I even sat down. People were looking at me. That wasn't new. What was new was that some of them actually smiled. A girl from the row behind me lifted her hand in greeting. Another student moved his bag without hesitation when I passed his table. Apparently, designing one decent building was enough to upgrade me from mysterious human nobody wanted near themto mysterious human who might actually be useful.Progress, I supposed. I placed my drawing tube on the table and sat beside Rafael."Morning."He looked up from his notes. His white shirt was rolled to his forearms again, and a few strands of dark hair had fallen over his forehead. His golden eyes moved over my face for a second."You slept."I stared at him."Is that a question?""An observation.""Then you're wrong."The corner of his mouth lifted."You look better than yesterday.""That's a very polite way of saying

I hadn't slept much.Every time I closed my eyes, I found myself standing in the white forest again. The silver wolf. That single word.Run.By the time I reached the architecture studio, I had convinced myself it had only been a dream. Nothing more."Morning."Anna smiled as she slipped into the seat beside me."You look exhausted.""I didn't sleep well.""Wolf Academy nightmares already?""If I tell you about it, you'll probably think I'm crazy."She laughed."Give it a week. Everyone here is a little crazy."Professor Aldren entered the classroom precisely as the bell rang. Conversations faded instantly. He placed a thick folder on his desk before looking around the room."Today," he began, "your real work starts."The room grew noticeably quieter."The previous assignments were only to evaluate your individual skills."He paused."This project will determine thirty percent of your final grade."Several students exchanged nervous glances. Professor Aldren opened the folder and pro

The dormitory was unusually quiet. For the first time since arriving at Wolf Academy, I found myself looking forward to the silence. Anna was already asleep in the bed across the room, one arm hanging over the edge of her mattress, a book lying open on the blanket beside her. She had insisted she wasn't tired less than ten minutes ago. She hadn't even made it through a single chapter. A faint smile crossed my face."I wish I could fall asleep that fast."She mumbled something I couldn't understand i in her sleep and rolled onto her side. Lucky her. I changed into an oversized T-shirt, brushed my hair, and climbed into bed. The room was dark except for the moonlight spilling through the window. I stared at the ceiling. Sleep refused to come. My mind replayed the last few days over and over again. The acceptance letter. Principal Luca. The strange way every student looked at me. Rafael. Matteo. The courtyard. The Alpha auras. Everyone dropping to their knees...except me. I frowned."Wha

I had expected Rafael to mention what happened in the courtyard. He did not. The next afternoon, we sat across from each other in the architecture studio with our drawings spread between us. Sunlight fell through the tall windows, warming the wooden table and catching in Rafael’s golden eyes whenever he lifted his head. Neither of us mentioned the students who had fallen to their knees. Or the wolves that had tucked their tails. Or the fact that I had apparently walked through something called an Alpha aura without noticing. Rafael focused on the project as though nothing unusual had happened. I tried to do the same.“The entrance needs to feel welcoming,” I said, adjusting the tracing paper. “Not like visitors are walking into a fortress.”“It is meant to represent the four clans.”“That doesn’t mean it has to threaten everyone who approaches it.”One corner of his mouth lifted.“You don’t like threatening buildings?”“I don’t like buildings that need to prove how powerful they are.”
