GINGER

“Because there are no other packs in this area except ours,” Trav replied. “What other reason could they possibly have for coming here, especially in the dead of winter? There’s literally nothing except dark, cold, and oil rigs.”

“But we have no disputes with them.”

“No known disputes,” Sara corrected. “Neutral packs become enemy packs all the time. It’s all about who gets to them first and has something to offer.”

“It’s that pack from near Galena. They’re probably still pissed we refused to join their lame scrimmage a couple years ago,” Tyce said.

“We can’t assume anything,” Trav replied. “Anyway, we appreciate all the help you’ve been giving our pack, so we’ll have our warriors keep an eye on things for now and keep you posted on any new developments. So far, they haven’t come too close to our borders.”

“Good,” Tyce responded, clapping his hands together. “So now that we have that news out of the way, want to do a little sparring?”

Sara jumped right up and said, “Let’s go!”

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 26

THERESA“There you are!” My mom grabbed me by my mock-neck collar as soon as I entered the dining area. My pulse quickened at the gesture, but I instantly relaxed upon seeing she was facing the other direction and dragging me toward the kitchen. At least this wasn’t about that.I hadn’t even had the time to imagine why she was dragging me by the collar as if I were a dog when she planted me in front of our cook. “It’s about time you learn how to make borscht. Your future mate will be expecting it,” my mom said. “Every good Ukrainian wife knows how to make a good borscht.”“Every good Ukrainian wife?” I asked, lifting an eyebrow. While, rationally, I knew I was half Ukrainian, I’d certainly never been raised as if I were. We never ate her home country’s food, even with a cook that was from her home country. And I’d, in all likelihood, find my mate in the very country I was currently standing in. So it defeated all logic for her to suddenly state that I needed to prepare to be a “good U

THERESA“Well, Alpha, what do you think?” my mom asked as Nikolai took his first sip of the soup.“It’s good,” he replied.“It’s nice having a beautiful woman cook you a hot meal, right?”My cheeks heated. Goodness, why was my mom making this dinner so awkward?“Mm,” Nikolai responded noncommittally.“Terri can cook all sorts of wonderful dishes. What would you like to try next?”Nikolai let out a breath, and then responded, “I am happy with Tasha’s cooking and I am also happy to eat American food. Terri does not need to go out of her way for me.”“But Terri is more than happy to go out of her way for you.” Could my mom make it any more obvious what she was doing? My body was on fire with embarrassment. I was ready to tear my mock neck off with how uncomfortably hot my neck and chest burned.“There is no need, Luna,” Nikolai replied politely. He finally set his spoon down, his expression unreadable. But for a moment, I swore I saw something flicker behind those silver eyes—annoyance?

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 28

JULIA*29 years ago*By the time I’d gotten to high school, I had one goal. Get out of this shithole. While perhaps there may have been some advantages to being a part of the beta family, no one was untouched by the poverty caused by communism. And while most had accepted this as a card they’d been dealt, there had always been a fire deep within me that knew—yes, just knew—that I was not meant for this middle-of-nowhere country bumpkin life. In my heart, I could sense that I was too big for the pack I’d been born into.My older brother would be beta one day, even if it was in some half-dilapidated pack, where the electricity didn’t even work half the time. Being a beta’s daughter, however, meant that I wasn’t destined for anything more than to be some nobody forest-boy’s mate. If I stayed here, I’d never have even half a chance of meeting someone outside Severnaya Zvezda Pack. But once the Soviet Union fell a few days after the winter solstice in 1991, I began to have some hope. Perha

JULIA*29 years ago*As the month wore on, he became desperate to fuck me. I threw him breadcrumbs. One day, I let him touch my breasts while fully clothed. Then, a few days later, I unbuttoned my blouse and let him touch them bare. Each new boundary he crossed made him bolder, more frantic, more obsessed. One evening, I wore a skirt and let him slip his fingers past the elastic of my panties. His breath hitched as he pressed against my entrance, teasing, testing.“Just don’t put them inside,” I murmured. “I’m saving myself for my mate.”“You’re so fucking wet though,” he groaned, tracing the slickness with the tip of his finger. “I can make you feel so good.”I tilted my head, letting my lashes flutter. “Do they have to go inside?”His nostrils flared. “Have you ever had an orgasm?”“What’s that?” I asked with eyes wide, playing the role of the innocent, untouched girl he so badly wanted to corrupt.“Oh, fuck,” he choked out. “You’re driving me crazy, Julia.”“Why?” I tilted my head,

NIKOLAIThere hadn’t been much improvement in training. I reminded myself that we’d only been here for a short period of time. These things took time. In our pack, we had never expected anything of our women, not even to pass the bare minimum physical requirements that packs in the US apparently had. While I’d come to understand that Tyce’s pack was considered traditional for the standards here, they were still far more progressive than the vast majority of packs in Eastern Europe. Before the war, it had made sense. Women were to be protected and cherished. They made a house a home, a dead animal a meal, a mating a family. Each gender brought its own strength. But what if a pack was only forty, half of which were women? Then what?We no longer had families, we ate for survival, not for enjoyment. And mates? What of them? Sasha wasn’t wrong. We did need to increase our numbers. But it was also irresponsible. We hadn’t set up our permanent residence. We were still reliant on the Jade Mo

NIKOLAI“He should take Terri with him,” Yulia explained. “She could help him if something happens. We never allow anyone in our pack to travel alone. It’s for good reason.”“You know what.” Lance looked up, and a smirk appeared on his face. “That girl has been getting weak. She slacked with her training in school. Time out in the Alaskan wild would be good for her. I’ve been going too easy on her.”Yulia nodded her approval.“Go get Terri ready to go. I’ll have a talk with Nikolai,” Lance said, and gestured to the chair in front of his desk.Yulia practically skipped out of his office. I likely lost a centimeter of teeth from grinding them so hard. It took everything in me not to flip over Lance’s desk. What could he possibly be thinking? He pulled a knife out of the top drawer of his desk and stroked it between his thumb and pointer finger. A typical threatening alpha tactic. “I’m assuming you’d like to make an heir one day.”“I would,” I confirmed, not sure where this was conversat

NIKOLAIWe traversed through the snow for hours. By evening, Terri’s stomach grumbled, cutting through the silence of the frozen wilderness. I turned my head to sneak a peek at her, and she kept her head facing ahead, marching on.Again, her stomach grumbled.I had planned to make it further before attempting to hunt, as I had learned it was a bit more abundant a good dozen or so kilometers forward, but something inside me stopped my feet in their tracks. I physically couldn’t ignore her hunger. It was as if my willpower had been overtaken by the aching need to fix what was wrong with Terri. She stopped next to me and tilted her head in a look of confusion.I pointed my nose toward the open tundra and nodded. I’m sure she understood. She followed me into the pitch-black landscape and switched off her night vision as soon as I did. It was time to hunt using our other senses. We stuck side by side as we crept into the icy terrain, scenting along our path, perking our ears for any sounds

THERESAThere was a shift in Nikolai. I don’t even know how I so definitively understood this. One moment, he was his usual grumpy self, with dark clouds hanging over him. And the next moment, something just seemed lighter about him.At first, I thought I imagined it. But as we traveled, something was… different. His shoulders weren’t as tense. His ears weren’t flicking back toward every sound like they usually did. And when I stumbled over uneven snow, his head turned—just for a second—before he returned his focus forward. The realization crept over me slowly. There was a shift in Nikolai.I didn’t think I’d ever felt so in tune with someone before. I’d never been so aware of someone’s mood, especially someone that was well-practiced at keeping a poker face. But the longer we traveled together, the less I could ignore how tuned in to him I was. After following him for over twelve hours, he made an abrupt stop. I can’t lie. I was relieved. My legs felt like they would give if we conti

TYSONUpon our return, we sank into the seats that had practically become our second home in my office. I mindlinked Liam, telling him to stop by when he had a moment. He entered within minutes.“Good news, Alpha. I checked the weather reports and flight conditions. The skies will be all clear tomorrow morning. We’ll be able to head down to Anchorage. I’m making sure the runway is cleaned off and the plane is fueled as we speak.”"Beautiful," I replied, nodding in approval."We’re back on track," Nikolai said as soon as Liam left. For the first time in days, I allowed myself to relax—just a little. We had a plan. We were moving forward. But something still nagged at me."I don’t get it." I furrowed my brows. "Why take Terri and Gigi? Were they just easy targets? But why? What does someone want from my pack?"Across from me, Nikolai shifted in his chair. His gaze flickered to the side before settling back on me.Unease crept up my spine. Then he cleared his throat. "Tyce," he began.I

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 93

TYSONWhen we reached the penitentiary, I yanked open the back door of my car. Joe flinched but didn’t resist when I grabbed his arm and hauled him out. He moved stiffly, but he didn’t fight. He’d be stupid to.Nikolai followed as I dragged Joe into the cement building. We passed rows of cells, the few prisoners inside watching silently. A guard stepped aside, his face impassive, as I pulled open the heavy metal door leading to the basement and forced Joe through. The temperature dropped as we descended the narrow staircase. The dim, flickering lights cast jagged, erratic shadows along the damp cement walls, making them seem alive. The steps creaked beneath our weight. The harsh stench of fear mixed with the odor of bleach and stale air.Once we made it to the bottom, I shoved Joe into an old wooden chair that was darkened by stains from those who had sat there before him, most of whom had never walked back out.“Stay,” I commanded with my alpha aura.Joe whimpered and his body locked

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 92

NIKOLAI“Joe Shmoe,” Tyce spat from the driver’s seat. We were back in his car for the fourth—or maybe fifth—time in two days.“His name is Joe Shmoe?” I asked, raising a brow.“Joe. Joe nobody. Joe should-be-fucking-ashes.”Once again, Tyce was knuckling the steering wheel with his foot hitting the gas far too hard. At least the weather conditions had improved, and the roads were freshly plowed. But the tension inside the car may as well have been a storm in itself. The barely contained rage was rolling off Tyce in thick, heavy waves. Even as someone that wasn’t part of his pack, I could sense his alpha aura. He was in it to kill it at this point.I understood. The moment I’d smelled this man’s—if you could even call him a man—scent, I’d wanted to lose control too. My fingers twitched, aching to wrap them around Joe’s throat.“We need to keep him alive,” I said, just as much to myself as to Tyce.“That motherfucker doesn’t deserve it,” Tyce snapped, his anger palpable.“I don’t disa

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 91

NIKOLAIThe warriors continued to battle the terrible conditions well after Tyce and I had given up, working late into the night. But, in the end, they had no better luck than we had. Any scent of a werewolf that may have existed at some point was wiped away by the storm. Sophia was gone, vanished along with her scent.“You look like shit,” Tyce remarked the moment I stepped into his office the next morning.I dropped into the chair across from him with a heavy sigh. “I haven’t slept in two nights.”Tyce lifted his head, finally making eye contact. His sharp gaze flickered over me. After a long pause, he leaned back and folded his arms across his chest. "You really do care about her, don’t you?"I nodded in confirmation.Silence settled between us as we both sank into our chairs. Tyce lifted his coffee mug, taking a slow sip. I drank mine too—more out of habit than necessity. The caffeine had long stopped working, but at least it gave my hands something to do.Tyce finally broke the s

NIKOLAITyce’s hands trembled at his sides. His shoulders rose and fell unevenly, like he was barely keeping himself together. For a moment again, he looked young and lost, like a boy whose world was unraveling piece by piece. But he quickly shook his head and straightened his shoulders."I’ll do my best. I promise." Tyce’s voice was raw, quieter than before. His fingers flexed at his sides before he turned away, blinking hard. I recognized the move. The sheer, bone-deep exhaustion of trying to keep it together when everything inside you was falling apart. Finally, he turned back and said, “Give me something with her scent on it. Alpha Nikolai will help too.”Sophia’s father rushed back into the house, returning seconds later with a winter hat. He handed it to Tyce, who passed it straight to me.I took a deep breath, inhaling the Sophia’s scent, locking it into memory before handing it back.I was sure Tyce felt the same as I did. Someone had reached Sophia before we could. And now, s

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 89

NIKOLAIThe silence between us stretched thick and suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic tapping of Tyce’s fingers against the wooden desk and the occasional muffled sound of a voicemail message cutting in and out.Every few minutes, he tried again. Calling. Mindlinking. His expression flickered between frustration and outright fury every time the connection failed. Each passing minute felt like an hour.Tyce was relentless. Again and again, he dialed, pressing on the chosen contact of the moment, only to be met with the same voicemail box recording. Calling and mindlinking like a maniac.I couldn’t deny I wouldn’t have done the same. I just didn’t have the same means to attempt contact. So, I determined, my job, albeit impossible, was to attempt to keep him calm.Honestly, I wasn’t doing any better. My mind screamed for action, but all I could do was sit there, forcing myself to remain still. I kept blocking out the worst-case scenarios. If I let myself think about Terri in the ha

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 88

GINGERAs I woke, I fought against a dull, aching exhaustion pressing down on me like dead weight. My eyelids felt impossibly heavy. My mouth was dry, my head pounding. Every muscle in my body throbbed with soreness, as if I’d run a marathon the day before. This has to be the worst hangover of my life.Slowly, the fog in my mind began to clear. I inhaled the scent of crisp air and wet earth. Was I outdoors? I groaned, trying to roll over. A sharp clink echoed through the silence. My eyes snapped open.Coldness nipped at my skin—no, at my fur. My stomach dropped as my sluggish brain scrambled to make sense of it.The room—was it even a room?—was cloaked in darkness, the only illumination coming from the faint glow of my red night vision. The outlines of my surroundings took shape: cold, empty space, stone walls, and metal bars blocking the only exit. The scent of damp earth and frost hung heavy in the air.I tried to move, but the harsh clink of metal stopped me short. I looked down. M

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 87

TYSONI finally understood what it meant to straddle the edge of sanity and madness.I hadn’t slept in days. The world around me felt surreal, like I was walking through a dream—or nightmare. Every time I bumped into a wall or grazed a piece of furniture, I’d catch myself wondering why I hadn’t just passed through it. I felt like a ghost, a shadow of myself. Losing Gigi was like losing my purpose. Without her, what was the point of any of this? I scrolled through our old messages, rereading the last text she sent me:Gigi: Love you, send you some snaps laterAs if the words might change. As if they could tell me where she was now.But the screen remained the same. No new messages. Just a string of my frantic ones. They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Well, here I was, proving it. I must have called and texted both Gigi and Terri a thousand times. At this point, my fingers were moving on autopilot. The result

  • Wolfbitten   Chapter 86

NIKOLAIAs feared, by the next morning, Tyce still hadn’t heard from Gigi or Terri. The thick and suffocating dread was settling in. It was looking to be less and less a case of a couple of lost cell phones. While everyone else was at the morning temple service, Sasha and I met Tyce in his office, where he was seated in the same spot I’d left him the night prior.Tyce looked exactly how I felt, like hell. His eyes were bloodshot, shadowed by dark circles. His hair was even more disheveled than it had been the prior day. Overgrown stubble dusted his jawline. He appeared a ghost of his former self—an alpha taken down by his biggest weakness. He arrived in the same clothes he’d worn the prior day, now wrinkled from his clearly sleepless night. The muffled sound of a generic voicemail box rang through the air.He let out a heavy breath and rubbed his temples before running a hand through his hair. “Flight conditions are still a no-go,” Tyce muttered in a voice that was rough with exhausti
