A New Lease on Life

Jenny's POV

I find myself with more questions than answers as I make my way back to the guys car with only my angel Annie in my hands. But maybe she's not an angel. Maybe she is still out there, still alive. I have no idea if the guys have followed me or how long it takes them to start the car.

I just took the information that my 'dad' gave me and left the house. There was nothing else that he had for me to know. Nothing more that I needed from him, ever again. I let my thoughts drift as I hear two car doors slam. I hear them talking up front but I don't know what they are saying or why they keep calling my name. What I do know is that I need to remember what happened that day.

I will find my sister and I will get my life together. I sit back and close my eyes, letting the voices in the car drift off. Before I know it, I'm six again, running through the park. Annie is at my side and I am nowhere near my mom. I take one last look at my sister, daring her to race. As I do I see something that I didn't see back then.

I mean, I must have seen it, but I couldn't have known what it was back then. Jas and Jordan are from the leading mafia in our town, now, but they weren't the head honchos back when I was six. Back then it was an old man who had a vendetta against all things fun. He had a symbol that basically meant no. No to everything.

The car that is behind my sister, on the dirt road just beyond the trees is riddled with his symbol. I snap out of my thoughts, shouting, "What the fuck?"

I feel the car stop, and I start to move forward, but am stopped by the seat belt. That's funny, I don't remember buckling up.

I hear Jordan shout, "Are you okay?"

I open my eyes and meet his as he sits in the passenger seat, staring back at me. "I know what happened to Annie."

The two of them look at each other then back at me. "What do you mean you know?"

I take a deep breath as I start to explain what I saw, "Well, I was just lost in the memory of my last moment with my sister, when I saw a car almost right behind her."

Jas looks back at me, the car pulled to the side of the road. "What about the car made you shout, 'What the fuck?' just now?"

I draw the symbol, then say, "It was all over the damn car."

The two brothers look at each other and nod. "We are taking you home, and then you will rest while we get looking into this."

Jordan adds, "Yeah, and you will stick it out with us. As a maid or a friend or a lover. You are now stuck with us, Jenny."

I sigh as I just shrug. "Whatever. Can you just get me home?"

Jas chuckles as he drives. "We are less than a minute away from home, pretty girl."

I sit back against the seat and settle in for the rest of the ride. Before I know it, Jordan has my door open and has picked me up. I don't object or try to get away from him as he makes his way to the house. I give up on the day. There was too much information, too much stress. I just need to rest.

I lean my head against Jordan and let him carry me into this strange mansion.

***

I wake up, my eyes shooting open as I look at my surroundings. After the initial shock, I remember that I am actually safe. I remember that Jordan carried me into his house like I was his wife. I remember that I am far from home, or what I thought was my home. And finally, I remember that I have a job to do now.

I sit up straight as the door to the room I'm in opens. Jas is standing there with a tray filled to the brim with breakfast foods. "I don't know what food you like, so I brought a bit of everything."
