Chapter 1

Nora's POV

Only then did Adrian hand me a smile, like he was doing me a favor.

"That's better. I'm thinking about our future too."

He rubbed my hair and went into the bedroom to change.

Then, under my puzzled stare, he said, "Celeste just finished Milan Fashion Week. Her team is having a celebration dinner tonight."

He placed the newest unopened iPhone he'd bought that morning into a gift box.

I tightened my grip around the phone I'd been using for five years, its screen visibly cracked.

My own phone had frozen the week before.

When I said I wanted a new one, Adrian told me to wait until the holiday sales.

But when my best friend Celeste Monroe wanted something, he never made her wait.

Before leaving, Adrian bent and kissed my cheek.

"Go to bed early. Don't wait up."

I looked at the plate of ribs I'd spent the entire afternoon making.

My throat tightened.

"Okay. I won't wait."

Not tonight.

Not anymore.

I sat alone at the dining table and forced myself to finish the ribs.

My stomach was painfully full when my phone started vibrating again and again.

It took nearly half a minute for the dying device to load my messages.

Celeste had sent me a voice note.

"Nora, thank you both for the gift. I love it.

"Especially Adrian. I only mentioned yesterday that I was tired of the orange color, and tonight he replaced it with the classic silver one. He's so thoughtful.

"If he treats a friend this well, he must spoil you even more in private. I really misjudged him when I used to think he was cold.

"I'm so happy for you. I really am."

I didn't even reach the end of the message before I grabbed the trash can and threw up.

Celeste sounded tipsy, but completely sincere.

Last week, when I asked for a new phone for my birthday, she'd been standing right there when Adrian refused.

She praised him for being practical.

She teased me for spending too freely.

I rinsed my mouth mechanically and tried to settle my stomach.

This wasn't the first time.

The month before, I worked late and missed the supermarket's evening discount window.

Adrian barely spoke to me for a week.

Then Celeste landed a Milan runway booking.

To celebrate, Adrian took her to a new high-end restaurant downtown.

Whenever he and I ate out, he planned around coupons.

That night, he tipped nearly a thousand dollars.

Two months earlier, we were at a tourist attraction when my period came early.

I asked him to buy me pads.

He looked annoyed.

"Didn't you stock up for a year during the last sale? Why would you buy them here at tourist prices?"

I was in pain and too humiliated to argue.

A woman nearby noticed and quietly gave me a spare pack.

Later, Adrian spent more than twelve thousand dollars at auction on an overpriced painting by an obscure foreign artist for Celeste.

That time, I finally confronted him.

He wiped my tears as if he truly didn't understand.

"Nora, groceries and household supplies only keep us alive. No matter how good they are, they're consumables. So we save where we can.

"But art and the things that feed the spirit are different. Some things are worth any price.

"Celeste and I came from the same kind of scarcity. When I give her something she once couldn't have, it's almost like I'm healing the younger version of myself too.

"You grew up never lacking anything. You've never really had some grand spiritual pursuit either. It's normal that you don't understand."

I no longer knew when it had happened.

But whenever Adrian talked about Celeste now, warmth softened his entire face.

It hadn't always been like this.

When my trip ended, I went home.Celeste released a public statement denying an affair. It was her word alone, and almost nobody believed her.Her career had barely begun, and the scandal nearly ended it.Modeling agencies quietly stopped offering her work. Her agency terminated her contract. After that, she survived mostly on small in-person promotional jobs.Adrian still tried several times to take care of me.He never got past my parents' door.I'd made up my mind to say goodbye to all of it.After traveling for a while, I started wondering what I actually wanted to do with my life.So I opened a small home-style restaurant near a university district. At first, it was only something to keep me occupied.Within a week, students were lining up outside before opening time.I was constantly busy.Ray and Diane worried I was exhausting myself, so eventually they closed their own little restaurant and came to help me.Somehow, in all that work, I found the thing I'd never

Celeste turned toward Adrian again."You aren't innocent either. You have to help me clear this up."Adrian had run out of patience with her days ago."There was never anything between us. What exactly do you want me to clarify?"That painting was the year-end bonus you asked for. The phone was a congratulations gift between colleagues. And the apartment..."He stopped.Understanding lit his face."I never bought you an apartment."You're the one who had to post it online to show it off, and you caught me in the shot without thinking. If people are drawing their own conclusions now, that's your own doing."Adrian turned to me immediately."Nora, is that the post that made you give up on me?"I can explain. Grant was the one buying the place. She only asked me to come along and give her a second opinion. I didn't put a dollar into it."And I didn't spend our house fund. I moved it, but every cent is still there. I was going to come back, talk to you properly, and then go loo

Then Adrian's eyes dropped to my flat stomach.Pain crossed his face."This is my fault. All of it."He stepped toward me as if he wanted to pull me into his arms.I backed away immediately. The hurt in his eyes deepened. He dragged both hands through his hair."Nora, I swear I never meant for any of this to happen. Please give me one more chance."You've lost so much weight. Let me take care of you. Let me make it up to you somehow."Seeing him again brought back nothing except pain."No."I turned and went back inside the hotel.I hoped that would finally make him understand.Instead, another unwanted visitor arrived. The next morning, arguing outside my door woke me.Celeste was crying so hard she could barely speak."Nora's in there, isn't she? Let me see her."Adrian kept his voice low and furious."No. She's still recovering and she's asleep. Whatever you need can wait.""Nora."Celeste raised her voice and started knocking.Adrian swore under his breath and

On the drive home, Adrian kept thinking about the last few years.Maybe he'd been too hard on Nora about money. There had been reasons.During his father's illness, every dollar had mattered. After growing up that way, saving had become instinct. And there was the promise he'd made when they married.Five years later, he'd finally saved enough for a down payment. He could loosen his grip now.He could change. On impulse, he booked two tickets to the Maldives for their fifth anniversary. He was almost giddy as he hurried home, and nearly tripped on the way. Then the elevator doors opened.Their apartment door was ajar. His heartbeat stumbled. He rushed inside. The blood on the living-room floor stopped him cold."Nora."His shout cracked through the apartment.A neighbor opened her door."You're finally back. I hurt Nora."Let me go. I'll disappear and never come between you again. Then she'll feel better."Adrian gritted his teeth through the pain and steadied her."Celeste, stop thinking like that."You didn't do anything wrong."Neither of us did."We had figure-model classes in college. To me, drawing the human body is normal."Nothing happened between us. There's nothing to panic about."He remembered the scene in the bedroom and frowned."Nora's been emotional lately. That's why she reacted so strongly."She's always been reasonable. I'll explain it properly and she'll understand."Celeste looked up through tears."Really?""Of course. That evening, Adrian started calling my parents instead. He kept calling until it was obvious he had no intention of stopping.I finally took Mom's phone."What do you want?"There was one second of silence. Then Adrian exploded."Nora, what exactly do you think you're doing?""Exactly what I wrote.""There's a limit to how far you take a tantrum. Whatever problem you have with me, why are you taking it out on Celeste?"Do you know she almost ran into traffic because she was so desperate to get back and explain things to you?"Adrian cared deeply about appearances. In all the years I'd known him, I'd never heard him lose control like this. For a moment, I was stunned. He seemed to realize it too and forced his voice down."Nora, you're not a child. I'm going to pretend I never saw that message about divorce. Think carefully for the next couple of days.
