As soon as Ethan stands next to me and pulls me into his arms, I feel like the weight of the world just rolled off my shoulders. His presence alone puts me at such ease, I can finally breathe again.

I don’t bother speaking as Ethan pulls Logan into a friendly discussion.

“Alpha Logan, I’m happy you decided to visit us, but I can’t help but wonder why you have arrived alone. I’m sure I mentioned that your Luna is more than welcome to join us on the invitation. Why didn’t she accompany you?” Ethan asks and glances at me, flashing me a quick, reassuring smile.

Logan huffs out an angry breath, a sound I’ve heard too many times to count as he brushes off Ethan’s polite questions. “She just didn’t,” is all Logan offers as an explanation.

Truth be told, the same as Ethan, I too wonder why Katherine didn’t join Logan. She’s extremely clingy, she goes everywhere Logan does, or at least used to do that in the past, so it’s odd to see him travel anywhere without his beloved Luna.

What’s going on?” I ask and feel a frown pull at my face. Ethan runs his hand through his hair, looking frustrated. “Logan still has to return to the Capital to report everything about the truce negotiations to the Alpha King, you know that, right?” “I do,” I mutter and frown a little deeper. “But I don’t understand how that has anything to do with letting him stay longer, for the purpose of attending the birthday celebration I never asked for, at that.” The look on Ethan’s face softens as he gently places his hands on my shoulders. “Amelia, if we allow him to stay, we help him let go of you. Once he realizes there’s no way back, he will leave and finally do what has to be done. I toss on a robe and rush to check who’s there, then a wide smile spreads across my lips as I see Ethan standing there. “Good morning, Amelia,” he says with a smile as wide as mine and gives me a quick once-over. “It seems you intended to enjoy your day off. I’m sorry to bother you.” “Nonsense,” I stop him and usher him inside. “You never bother me, and besides, today I’m starting work later, it’s not exactly a day off. But do tell why you decided to stop by. And don’t start with all that ‘I wanted to check on you’ stuff, you know I’m fine.” I scold him gently. Ethan chuckles and shakes his head. “Only partly this time.
