Haisley sucked in a sharp breath, then let out a quiet laugh.

"What's this? World finally beat you down? Ready to come home and take the throne?"

Classic Haisley—teasing, but always got my back.

I wasn't in the mood. "Yeah. I'm coming back. Set it up."

She caught the shift in my voice, knew something went down.

"Come back," she said. "Gauthier Corp's always got room for you."

Minutes after we hung up, HR called—full apology, offer back on the table.

Not long after, Yvette called.

"Dylan, we've been in a cold war for a whole day. You done being dramatic?" Her voice all smug, like she was doing me a favor. "Don't blame me. Kevin was jobless and literally getting sick from stress. Try to see the bigger picture."

My chest burned, hands shaking. "I'm your boyfriend. And you sold me out so Kevin could take my spot. How could you even do that?"

"I didn't have a choice, did I?" Yvette said, all casual, like she was the voice of reason. "Kevin couldn't land anything decent. He's been a wreck—snapping at everyone.

"Gauthier Corp's perfect for him. Good pay, low stress, close to home.

"You're talented—just apply somewhere else. No need to make this a thing."

I laughed, bitter. "You know how many nights I pulled for that job? How much I burned out?

"I only applied 'cause you were interning there—I just wanted to be with you. And right when I was about to make it, you turned me in.

"Seriously, what the hell were you thinking?"

Yvette snapped. "Dylan Dunham, is your heart made of stone? You're so selfish! Kevin's your junior—you're supposed to help him! It's just a dumb job. Are you really that desperate?"

"You're yelling at me?" My whole body went cold. I couldn't believe she actually said that.

"If it's such a stupid job," I shot back, "why'd you report me just to hand it over to Kevin? If he's so talented, let him earn one himself."

"Why bother when we had one right there?" she said, smug. "All you had to do was send out a few more résumés. Maybe if you stopped whining, you'd already have another offer. You're the one wasting time."

Yvette let out this dramatic sigh. "Dylan, I thought you were the nice, generous type—like, dream boyfriend material. Never figured you'd be this petty.

"You're just salty you lost the job and can't flex on your classmates, huh? That's why you're starting drama."

Her words cut deep. Heart twisted up.

Petty?

It was just an intern gig. I didn't even need it.

I applied because she was there. That's it. Just wanted to be close to her.

If I really wanted to, I could've walked into management with one word to my sister.

But now? I was done. No more words.

I was already shattered.

All I wanted was to shut her and that fake-sweet snake up—for good.

I let out a quiet sigh. Yvette took it as surrender.

She jumped right in, smug. "Alright, I get it—you've been wronged. I can help you reach out to some small companies. You'll definitely get something. Maybe not Gauthier level, but it's a solid start."

She kept going like she was handing me a golden ticket.

I cut her off, cold. "Don't bother."

Yvette sneered. "Ha! Graduation's coming up. You really think you'll land a good job without me?"

I fired back, "Wouldn't dream of bothering you. Last thing I need is getting an offer just to have someone snitch and hand it off again. I've got it covered. Neither of you needs to stress."

She lost it. "Can you get real for once? You think you passed Gauthier's interview on your own? If I hadn't coached you, you wouldn't have made it past round one. Without me, you're nothing!"

The board's decision lit up the company fast.Yvette and Kevin? Blacklisted.Wiped off the system, names basically cursed. No one in the biz would touch them now.Weeks later, I got a random call.Yvette.She wanted to meet at that coffee shop near HQ. Said it was important.I showed up. Not for closure, just to end it clean. She looked wrecked. Bloodshot eyes, zero trace of that go-getter energy."Dylan..."She fumbled hard."I'm sorry. I messed up. It was Kevin—he pressured me. Said his family was broke and he needed that job. I panicked... He's a snake, Dylan. He made me file that report, told me to start the rumors. I never wanted it to go this far."She scrambled to dump it all on Kevin, acting like she'd been dragged along. Then came her last shot."Don't you remember our three years? I loved you! Can't we try again? I swear I'd never hurt you..."I let her talk. Watched her twist herself into knots, reaching for any exit.It was kinda sad. Almost funny.Any lefto

It had everything—Yvette's bogus report that tanked my offer, how they played coworkers, stirred gossip, and pinned it all on me.Every anonymous post? Traced. IPs logged.Water cooler whispers? Recorded.Kevin's scheming in group chats? Logged, stamped, airtight. It was a full circle of solid proof. As the committee flipped through the stack, their faces darkened. This wasn't gossip—it was a straight-up takedown attempt. And I was just sitting there, waiting for the hammer to drop.***In Gauthier Corp's stiffest conference room, the air was heavy. Both sides of the long table packed with board members and execs.Yvette and Kevin got seats as the accusers.I was the last to walk in—the one on trial. The meeting kicked off, and a senior board member came for Haisley hard."Ms. Gauthier, these rumors have wrecked your reputation and the company's. You owe us answers."Yvette seized the moment. She stood and pointed at me, all fired up. "I'm the one who reported him! I sw

After the meeting, Yvette lunged for my hand—security shut that down fast."Dylan! Please! It was Kevin! He made me do it! I wasn't thinking!"She was scrambling to throw him under the bus.I stared her down. "It's Mr. Dunham. Keep it work-related."Then I walked off without looking back.Up ahead, Kevin was shooting daggers at her, phone already out, making moves.Yeah, he wasn't done.Snake was just hunting for his next sponsor.Too bad I'd already set the next trap.***Yvette and Kevin's suspension didn't slow them down—it just cranked up their spite.Soon, the office was buzzing with nastier, sleazier rumors:"Mr. Dunham? Please. He's just the CEO's boy toy.""No wonder he's her assistant. Bet he sweet-talked his way into her bed.""He's a total social climber. Yvette dumped him when she found out the truth, and he snapped."The gossip got darker—gross, twisted stories laced with scandal and sex.And this time, they weren't just aiming at me.They were gunning for

"I... I didn't! It was a glitch! Must've been a system malfunction!" she stammered, eyes bouncing all over the place.Kevin shot up too, throwing on the fake worry. "Yeah, Mr. Dunham, the system bugs out sometimes. I'm sure Yvette didn't mean to."Still clinging to the old classic—blame the tech.I didn't say a word. Just watched their little improv show play out. Then, calm as ever, I turned and clicked to the next slide. The screen lit up with system logs—Yvette's name stamped in bold red.No wiggle room. No excuses."I don't know if the system glitched," I said, voice even. "But I know the logs don't lie. Yvette Klutz, this isn't about your skills anymore. It's about integrity."Gasps rippled through the room.Every head turned to her—faces twisted in shock, some straight-up disgust. She went pale as drywall. Sweat broke across her forehead. Whole body trembling. That's when Haisley finally spoke."Ms. Klutz. If you've got a problem with my executive assistant, bring it

All eyes locked on me.Yvette and Kevin? Smirking like they'd already written my eulogy.I looked at Ms. Wallace, cool as ever. "Great question. Super important."Click—next slide. Appendix lit up with a full breakdown of the competitor's mid-range move."We didn't just consider it—we ran a full analysis and built a strategy around it. It's not a threat. It's an opening."I broke it all down easy—data, conclusions, the whole package. Not only answered the question, but doubled down on the strength of my positioning.Ms. Wallace? Face went sour real fast.Kevin jumped in, all fake charm and soft tones. "Ms. Wallace was just trying to help, Mr. Dunham. Don't take it the wrong way. We're all on the same team here."Classic move—play nice, change the subject, bury the flop. But Yvette wasn't done.During Q&A, she shot up and went full offense. "Mr. Dunham, your slides are impressive, but honestly? It's all theory."Voice loud, tone sharp—she wanted the drama. "You're fresh outt

  • Wrong Guy to Betray   Chapter 6

Not long after I started, my first big internal project presentation came up—my shot to actually prove I belonged. And surprise, surprise, Yvette and Kevin weren't about to sit that one out.Kevin strolled into my office all fake-friendly, holding out a cup of coffee like some peace offering."Mr. Dunham, you've been grinding hard," he said, voice all careful. "Heard you're working on that new product proposal. Ms. Wallace has tons of experience with that stuff... but, uh, she's got a temper. Try not to step on her toes."Sounded helpful, right? Yeah, no.Ms. Wallace was the loudest voice against the proposal—and one of Yvette's little pawns.Kevin was laying a trap, plain and simple.I watched his little act, took the coffee without blinking. "That so? Appreciate it," I said, playing along like I bought it.Behind the scenes, I started digging.Turned out Yvette had "accidentally" left out a key market report while helping organize the data. The one with all the juicy updates
