Chapter 001
It was yet another day for Xiao, exaggerated but it was nothing near to be an extraordinary one. She’s feeling disheartened by this time and isn’t happy for the fact that she’s here again, standing in front of the world. People were around; everyone’s eyes were pointed at her. And yet, she’s feeling empty. She didn’t want to be here although people were really cheering for her.
“Xiao Lee! Xiao Lee!”
She gazed, looked up for someone; and her heart’s pounding like crazy. She wasn’t supposed to be that nervous. This day was supposed to be an another yet simple day. It wasn’t supposed to make her feel excited.
But when her eyes met her father’s everything didn’t seem worthless anymore. Something was glazed upon the damaged cupcake—bloody and dangerous, but tasty and delicious—an image that bypassed her current scenario, making her feel nostalgic about the memory she didn’t want to remember.
“Xiao can’t join this competition,” Yamato, her father, said.
“But Yamato, you know how important this is. Don’t favour and spoil your child,” said by the woman Xiao abhorred the most. The woman she didn’t want to see for the rest of her life. The woman that she wished for death itself. True enough, she didn’t want to feel remorse with anyone—especially with her own family—but this woman was an exception.
“I’ not favouring Xiao nor you, Scarlet. But it’s what I see as the right thing to do. Xiao has been competing various competitions nonstop for the past months. I want my daughter to rest. If I’m favouring someone, then it’s myself because it’s for my own daughter.”
“I understand where you're coming from, Yamato, but this competition doesn’t rely just for some sort of entitlement. It’s a legacy within our ancestors. You, yourself must be the one to fully understand this. And I don’t know why you’re breaking down our legacy. Is it because of your mistress? And her daughter?”
Xiao saw how her father’s face shone gloomily, making herself grit her teeth as she looked up to the old elegant woman. Yes, Xiao admits she’s truly elegant and was considered to be a very sophisticated woman. But with how she acts, Xiao didn’t think of her as a woman with class. Saying something so preposterous was just so out of her league.
“I think you’re already crossing the line, Scarlet. The fact that Xiao is here with us, I don’t like the things that are coming out from your mouth.”
“Why? Am I making stories here? I’m saying complete facts.”
“I have no mistress and Xiao’s my only daughter. Cut it off with your nonsense,” he said grimly and Xiao could feel the tension between the two.
“There were evidences, Yamato. You can’t just twist them. But it’s alright, since oyaji is okay with what you did, so you were completely off the hook.”
Now it was Xiao’s face to turn grim as she heard the mention of her grandfather. It was completely annoying, too, that her aunt was calling her grandfather in an informal way.
“The hell are you saying? Oto-san and I talked and he knew everything. You’re completely messing things up!”
“I am not here to argue, Yamato. I am here to completely remind you that oyaji is in need of your help to maintain your good profile. If you’re really a good son, you should not disappoint him,” and with that, she just slammed the door, completely leaving Xiao and her father both flabbergasted. Well, it wasn’t the initial stagger that someone would feel for the first time but the shocking reaction of the fact how she never changed that left within them.
How ridiculous! Xiao thought with exhausted mind after witnessing and hearing the tensioned conversation. She may be still young, but she isn’t young enough to not understand what they were talking about. And with that thought, a streak of lightning passed through her eyes the moment she heard the people’s honks and screams, snapping her back to reality from a horrendous memory she didn’t want to remember.
“Xiao Lee! I love you!” she heard from somewhere which made her feel foreign. She didn’t understand why she wasn’t jovial although she has everyone’s attention. The fact that numerous banners were plastered at a very distance saying We love you, Xiao Lee! You’re the best! made her feel questionably unhappy. The bountiful attention she gained at a very young age made her ask the heavens if those were truly meant for her.
She excels at anything, mostly, and a lot of people adore her with that. Even at school, she receives numerous gifts from complete strangers. At first it was really good for her when the feeling was still new, but time passed by and it seems like it wasn’t something good anymore. The attention, the money, the beauty, everything seemed like a burden and a responsibility she needs to carry out; and by that fact, she didn’t want any of it. She only wished for a simple living, not a extravagant one; a life wherein she and her family are all joyous.
“And for this year, pocketing the gold with 54.870 points in total and sailing into finals of the two apparatuses, our gold medalist is... Xiao Lee Tatsunumi!”
As expected, loud shouts and screams enveloped the stadium as soon as Xiao advanced to the front of the stage with bright smile. She then turned to face her father from the VIP seats who was also giving a huge smile and numerous claps.
This is all for you, Dad.
It was not all easy for Xiao, the youngest of the gymnast squad, to reach the top of the podium against other qualifiers. Knowing Chinese and Korean athletes, they can be great competitors. For Xiao, it was really hard for her to surpass beat them. At the age of fifteen, she already gained her first ever gold medal and by that time, her upcoming competitions became successful.
“Things happened, they say. But I still think this isn’t for me,” Xiao said back then with her first interview as the youngest athlete.
Wearing a big smile on the top of the podium though, Xiao was surprisingly quiet and uptight outside of arena, obviously feeling uncomfortable with camera flash lights and microphones.
“According to the artistic gymnastics competition rules, qualifications for apparatus finals, and individual all around finals have been merged into one single competition,” said by a reporter, “so will we be expecting to see you there?”
“I’m not aiming for anything and I just do the best that I could ever do. I’m just enjoying what I love, it’s what my coach has been always telling me. And yes, I am competing this year’s World Championship because it’s part of our legacy,” Xiao said naturally, “it would be a shame if I wouldn’t participate.”
I’m enduring all of these, just for you.
“I am here to gain more experiences from international competitions, and hopefully gain gold streak for my upcoming years. The performances of the other competitors are very impressive and China hasn’t sent their best weapon yet. So, I should have a clear mind if I’m really aiming for victory,” Xiao explained.
“If I wanna survive and thrive in the World Championship this year, I have to improve my skills on vault and must prepare for a more difficult routine for more aerial stunts and balanced techniques,” she added, “especially that China might send their best weapon by that time.”
I love you with all my heart.
Chapter 002“Daddy!” a loud cheerful voice came out from Xiao’s little mouth, “Daddy!” as she ran towards a slouching figure, perhaps getting ready for the arrival of his daughter’s hug, “Daddy!”“Xiao, my little girl,” a huge warm hug embraced Xiao’s tiny body. She’s turning eighteen in few months but her body still looked like an elementary student, “I’m so proud of you.”Xiao refrained from the hug and faced her father with a huge smile, “I’m doing all of these because of you anyway. And for Mom, too,” she gleamed at the thought of mentioning her mother.I miss Mom so much. I wanna see her already.Yamato, on the other hand, seemed gloomy at the mention of his wife. Xiao noticed the sudden change of his expressions and she became concerned about it, “What’s wrong, Dad?”“I’m sorry to tell you,
Chapter 003“Miss Xiao,” a lady in maid outfit came inside her room after a few knows on the door, “it’s time.”Pursing her lips into thin lines, she turned to face her lamp shade that was placed above the side cabinet. Her eyes landed upon the small glint of gold—the knob of the cabinet. She pulled the knob and slowly, it showed the most precious thing she would never wanted to lose. The birthday gift from her mother. An antique music box. It was given to her when she was still eight. The day when her mother got kicked out of the household. The starting day wherein she no longer anticipated her upcoming birthdays. That time she had no idea what was happening. All she witnessed was a quarrel between her mother and her aunt. A scenario she never would have understood if she hadn’t grew up.“Are you ready, Miss Xiao?”“Well, I am,” Xiao turned to face the maid as soon as
Chapter 004 “News flash! Former child athlete in the field of gymnastics is back on the track!” “Daily news report! Mr. Hei Xuan, also known as the best young teen athlete during his times, is now coming back to what he has left behind!” “Mr. Hei Xuan was said to be China’s Representative for this year’s World Championship, competing against other qualified gymnasts!” For the past days that had passed, all television reports, news magazines, social medias and even on billboards, all of them were saying the same thing. For over a period of time, everything was all the same, as if they were songs being played on repeat. Hella annoying. As what Xiao commented on the latest post she has seen on social media. Everywhere and every single time, she sees no one but Hei Xuan. “He wasn’t even that good before, tsk. But y’all are getting crazy over some guy who went completely hiatus.” Xiao was mumbling towards herself as turned
Chapter 005Sighing, Xiao opened her locker when she realized she’s actually on time. She thought she would be late on her class for today. She wasn’t shocked anymore when she saw tons of letters, coloured papers, origamis and even flower petals the moment she opened up the vault’s door. It was flooded with a lot of things that she didn’t even know where they came from. All she knew was, this thing wasn’t new anyway.“Why do these guys always give stuffs? They don’t even know what are my likes and dislikes,” Xiao whispered to herself when she saw a pink floral piece of paper, perhaps another letter she already knew what’s the content even without actually opening it. Most probably, it would give her nothing but cringe.Gosh, it’s not just pink, it’s also very detailed with florals! Xiao screamed inside her mind in horror. It’s the thing she abhorred the most. Just by having the sigh
Chapter 006When Xiao entered the court, she sees no one. She was expecting by then for everyone to gather up at the centre of the court, but there was even no single shadow of anyone. Even her coach, she couldn’t find him.“What the heck? Was the reception call a prank? But there’s no way! It’s the reception itself!”Xiao was standing at the centre, seemingly like a lost child of her own. As if she was in a foreign place, she was left flabbergasted and confused.“Okay, everyone, start placing all the things we have prepared! Make sure you will never create any mistake and stick accordingly to the plan!”Just by hearing someone’s voice, Xiao turned to face the main entrance, and there she saw bunch of people coming in with placards, pom-poms, balloons, and any other things. It left an impression to her as to why she was witnessing such thing. Her brows remained clashed as she kept observing everyone&r
Chapter 007“Xiao, listen up,” her mother caressed the back of her head, “you must never lose the necklace and the music box, okay? These two are like your life supporter. Without them, you’ll die.”“Mom, what are you saying?”Shuan was silent; she tried her best not to breakdown in front of her daughter but she failed to do so. The little girl was confused, but she started crying also as soon as her mother’s face was full of tears.“I may not be able to see you again, that’s why I’m doing this for a chance to be with you.”“Mom, I don’t understand,” Xiao kept wailing as her loud cries became louder and louder.Shuan just closed her eyes as she hugged her daughter, “Xiao, be a good girl, okay? Especially to your grandfather. I love you so much, my princess.”“I love you, too, Mom. Please don’t leave me.”&ldqu
Chapter 008Everyone all started digging up their food. Xiao was mixing her curry sauce to her rice ball as she finds it very delicious. She always did this when she was young; and her mother would always cook chicken curry every time she would request. Another precious memory she could never let go.“Oh Xiao? You like mixing curry with rice?” asked her coach.“Yes, coach. It’s my favorite back in the old days. I’m so thankful you ordered this for me.”“Wow. I can’t believe it because we’re the same. I’m glad then we have the same taste.”“Really? You like curry with rice too? Wah, I thought I was the only one! Because before, Yerin always hated it when I eat curry with rice in front of her!” Xiao delightedly reminisced the memory of her best friend, as her eyes landed onto Hei’s; and for the second time around today, it felt surreal. They stared at each other, know
Chapter 009Xiao woke up wherein she still feels half-asleep. An enigma of her being in a dizzy state and having a dark grey vision made her feel nauseous. She was rubbing her eyes still, feeling the itchiness it offers and the urge of wanting it to be gone in an instant. Although feeling dizzy, she still managed her way up and tried getting away from the bed. As soon as she did, that’s when her head strikes a pain, causing an instant halt for her body as soon as the aching delved deeper. Damn it. A hangover. That’s when some realizations hit up; scenes of certain memory flashed through her eyes; vivid yet evanescent.A small growl escaped from Xiao’s lips while she was caressing the top of her head, messing her hair a little. She winced as the aching dived in once again, causing her to feel triple of the pain than the first one. She kept growling and wincing which made her sit down on the top of the duvet of her bed. She even let out a huge
