CHAPTER 2

Cold sweat trickles down my back while my feet—trapped in these heels that now feel like an instrument of torture—pound against the Fifth Avenue pavement. I check my wristwatch for the tenth time in the last three minutes: 8:12 AM. Punctuality is the golden rule of any job, and I am already breaking it before I even begin.

“Damn it, Camila, move!” I reprimand myself in a low voice, weaving past a group of tourists who have stopped to take photos of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

My mind is an absolute chaotic mess. On one hand, there is this crushing financial anxiety, and on the other, the image of the woman from the subway playing on a loop behind my eyelids. I can still feel the pressure of her fingers on my waist, and that sandalwood scent seems to have clung to my own clothes. Does she always take that train? Why did she look at me like that? I shake my head as I catch myself considering the possibility of continuing to take that train just to run into her again. I don’t have time for fantasies about imposing strangers. I have to save my future.

Finally, the imposing glass-and-steel structure of Apex Ink comes into view, towering before me. It’s a skyscraper that seems to want to scrape the Manhattan sky, gleaming under the morning sun with an intimidating arrogance. Taking a deep breath, I try to smooth down my skirt with trembling hands and climb the main steps. I take another deep breath and push through the revolving doors.

The lobby is a monument to expensive minimalism: white marble, soaring ceilings, and a deathly silence broken only by the echo of my hurried footsteps. I approach the reception desk, where a blonde woman with a hairstyle so tight it looks like it’s stretching the skin on her face peers at me over her designer glasses.

“I’m here to see Susana... Susana Murphy,” I say, trying to keep my voice from sounding as frantic as I feel. “I’m Camila Contreras, the new... the new employee.”

The woman scans me with insulting slowness; her eyes linger on a small scuff on the toe of my shoes and then on a strand of hair that escaped my ponytail during my sprint.

“You’re late, dear,” she tells me, her voice dripping with condescension. “Susana is on the 49th floor. The elevator on the right.”

She opens a drawer with mechanical movements and pulls out a rigid plastic badge attached to a black lanyard. She slides it across the counter toward me as if it were contaminated.

“Put it on. I don’t want security mistaking you for a food delivery person.”

I grab the badge with clumsy hands. In stark, black lettering against the white background, it reads: CAMILA CONTRERAS - RECEPTION (PROVISIONAL). I slip it over my head, feeling the weight of the cold plastic against my chest.

“And I suggest you use the service entrance next time if you’re going to arrive in this state.”

I feel the blood rush to my cheeks; humiliation burns in my throat, but I grit my teeth and don’t talk back. I can’t afford to lose my temper on day one. I walk toward the elevator, feeling her gaze pinned to my back like a needle. I feel a wave of relief as I step inside and finally manage to escape her stare.

The elevator shoots up so fast my ears pop. The digital numbers on the screen flash rapidly: 20, 30, 40... As I ride up, I try to compose myself in the mirrored walls of the cabin. I’m pale, my honey-colored eyes look huge from the scare, and my lips are still trembling a little. I touch up my lipstick with clumsy fingers and try to convince myself that everything will be fine.

When the doors slide open on the 49th floor, I lose my breath. This isn’t a normal office; it’s a vast, modern open space decorated with abstract artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows offering a dizzying view of Central Park. Dozens of people are moving back and forth with tablets and folders, but no one looks at me. It’s as if I were invisible—a ghost in the middle of a perfect machine.

I walk down the central hallway, looking for any sign of Susana. At the end of the hall, I notice a set of double glass doors left ajar. I peek in cautiously, expecting to find an executive desk, but what I see leaves me paralyzed: there is a woman crawling across the gray carpeted floor.

She must be in her early thirties. She is wearing a navy pencil skirt that stretches dangerously tight across her backside as she moves on all fours, and a white silk blouse with the sleeves rolled up. Her brown hair is a mess, and she seems to be searching for something frantically beneath a leather sofa.

“Hello?” I whisper, unsure whether I should step in or run away.

The woman jumps, lightly bumping her head against the base of the furniture. She spins around toward me and lets out a sigh of relief when she sees me. She gets up quickly, brushing off her knees with her hands. She is pretty, with a wide smile and an energy that completely contrasts with the coldness of the rest of the floor.

“Oh, thank God!” she exclaims, walking over to me. “For a second, I thought you were Amy, and she would have killed me if she saw me like this. I’m Susana, you must be Camila, right?”

“Yes, ma’am... Susana. I’m sorry I’m late, I had car trouble and—”

“Don’t worry about that right now,” she interrupts, looking back at the floor anxiously. “Help me, please. I dropped my engagement ring and I can’t find it. If I don’t have it on when Amy calls me, she’ll realize that... never mind.” She waves her hand dismissively. “She’ll just give me a one-hour lecture on professionalism, values, and how I should take care of my belongings.”

CHAPTER 10The office clock seems to mock time; it reads 9:30 PM. At this hour, the entire 49th floor of Apex Ink—and I assume the lower ones too—is a completely different place. The main lights have dimmed automatically, leaving only the track lighting illuminating the artwork and the designer lamps over the empty desks. The silence is no longer productive; it’s tense, almost solid, broken only by the hum of the ventilation system and the occasional creak of the building's structure under the Manhattan wind.My eyes burn. I’ve spent the last three hours in the warehouse moving boxes and organizing files until my fingers were coated in a fine layer of grayish dust and my muscles began to protest. When I came back up to the main floor, I did so hoping that Amy had already left, but the light filtering out from under her dark wood door tells me my punishment isn't over yet.I sigh.I walk to my desk with heavy steps. I feel exhausted, but also strangely alert. There is an electricit

CHAPTER 9Amy steps so close that I can see her pupils dilating. Her hands leave her pockets and rest on the counter, one on each side of my body, trapping me. This could easily be considered workplace harassment. And yet, I remain silent. Through it all, her perfume envelops me, but this time it isn't comforting; it’s aggressive.“I don't care who started it,” she hisses near my face. “In this building, you are my secretary. My employee. And I will not tolerate you playing the victim or seeking attention from mediocre men who have no idea what they are touching. Is that clear to you?”Her face is millimeters from mine. I can see the vein pulsing in her neck and the way her lips tighten. This isn't normal jealousy; it’s the jealousy of an owner over a valuable piece of property. And the most disturbing part of all is that, beneath my indignation, I feel a spark of pleasure at her possessiveness. My treacherous body responds to her proximity, and my eyes involuntarily drop to her m

CHAPTER 8The hum of the air conditioning on the 49th floor feels louder now, or perhaps my senses are just raw after our encounter in the warehouse. Every time Amy’s dark wood door opens, my spine tenses like a violin string about to snap. Barely a few hours have passed since she left me trembling among the boxes of old files, and the coldness with which she ignores me now is almost more painful than her intimidation. It’s 3:00 PM, and my stomach emits a roar of protest, reminding me that I hasn't tasted a bite of food since six in the morning. Taking advantage of the fact that Amy is submerged in a video conference with the London office, I decide to slip away for a few minutes to the staff breakroom.“I need sugar, caffeine, or a miracle,” I mutter to myself as I walk down the glass hallway. The breakroom is an architectural gem: designer sofas, a marble counter with espresso machines that look like spaceships, and a panoramic view of the surrounding skyscrapers. I pour myself

CHAPTER 7I freeze right where I stand. Assisting the editorial director is one thing, but manual labor is something entirely different.“To the archives?” My voice sounds firmer than I expect. “I thought my contract specified executive assistant duties on the main floor, Ms. Murphy.”Amy leans back in her leather chair, interlacing her long fingers. A minimal, almost imperceptible smirk emerges at the corner of her lips.“Your contract specifies that you report directly to me, Camila. If I decide that your priority today is the dead archives, then that is your job. Or does organizing old paper offend your sensibilities?”Her condescending tone makes my blood boil; a spark of dignified anger replaces any lingering trace of timidez.“I’ll do it,” I reply coldly, holding her gaze until she drops her eyes back down to her screen.“Good. Dismissed.”I dig my nails into my palms and walk out of her office. The underground warehouse is a massive, cold, and dimly lit space where th

CHAPTER 6The digital clock on my new desk reads 8:45 AM. I have been sitting for exactly half an hour in an ergonomic chair that probably costs more than three months of my rent. The silence on the 49th floor of Apex Ink is strangely peaceful at this hour, broken only by the typing of a few coworkers in the north area and the distant hum of the city traffic far below. In front of me, the three assigned folders sit open. They are international merger documents written in a complex technical jargon, but the challenge feels oddly comforting. I immerse myself in the texts, focused on correcting clauses and scanning signatures. For a few minutes, the buzz of my own anxiety quietens down, returning me to the familiar security of knowing how to do my job well.At 9:15 AM, the intercom on my desk emits a sharp beep that abruptly cuts through the calm.“Ms. Contreras, to my office. Now.”Amy’s voice filters through the speaker, sounding deep and flat. I rise immediately, smoothing down m

CHAPTER 5I nod, making a mental note of everything. She approaches me again, this time stopping in front of the massive window overlooking the New York skyline. The sunlight hits her silhouette, casting an almost celestial aura around her black hair, but I know there is nothing angelic about her—at least, not from what I’ve heard.“Come closer,” she orders without turning around.I walk toward her, stopping a step away. From the 49th floor, the city looks tiny—a model made of concrete and haste.“Look down, Camila. Everything you see—every light, every building bearing the seal of a publishing house—is either competition, or it’s mine. And I have no intention of losing a single inch of what belongs to me. Do you know what happens to those who can’t keep up with the pace?”“They get left behind,” I whisper.“They sink,” she corrects me, spinning around to face me once more. “And you are in a very precarious position. You are here by a fluke of fate and Susana’s insistence, but t
