Chapter 1

Author: Damie Hart
Right at midnight, the black sedan cut through the neon-lit downtown streets, its engine letting out a low, throaty growl.

Asher Deleon gripped the steering wheel with one hand. The veins on the back of his free hand stood out, and his knuckles were white from the strain.

The dashboard navigation was set to the Velvet Lounge.

Just 15 minutes ago, he had been sitting in the dining room, watching over an exquisite dinner that had gone from warm to cold and back again.

Today was their fifth wedding anniversary. He had spent the entire afternoon preparing Boston lobster, Beef Wellington, and the black truffle pasta that his wife, Katherine Spears, loved most.

A bottle of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti had been decanting for half an hour. The flickering candlelight cast a soft glow over a dinner prepared with painstaking romantic care.

Yet the star of the evening, who was supposed to be home before nine, still hadn't shown up. At 11:45 PM, he finally dialed her number.

"Hey, babe. What's up?"

On the other end of the line, Katherine's voice carried a faint, almost imperceptible trace of fatigue.

“Hey, when are you coming home?” Asher asked, forcing his tone to stay gentle. “The food is getting cold.”

"Oh... I'm so sorry. It slipped my mind. I've got a crucial cross-border video conference tonight, and it looks like it's going to run late. Go ahead and eat without me, okay?"

Right as she finished her sentence, Asher caught the faint background noise of music along with the muffled laughter of men and women.

His heart sank instantly. "Are you really in a meeting?"

"Yeah, why?" Katherine answered without hesitation.

"Then why do I hear music?" Asher pressed.

There was a brief silence on the other end before she smoothly explained, "Oh, that? They might be having an event in the conference room next door. I've gotta go, babe. I'm super busy right now. Talk to you later. Love you!"

As the dial tone buzzed in his ear, Asher held his phone in midair, unable to bring it down for a long time. Sitting alone in the warm, yellow candlelight, he felt like a complete fool.

The food still smelled inviting, but now it only mocked him. Over the past few months, he had grown all too accustomed to this constant waiting and endless disappointment.

Just as he was about to get up and clear the table, the screen of his phone lit up with a notification from Katherine's friend, Rachel Sanford.

He tapped on it and saw a video.

The clip showed a dimly lit, noisy lounge. Right in the center of the frame was none other than Katherine, who had just claimed to be trapped in a corporate meeting.

She was sunk deep into a plush leather sofa, her cheeks flushed. Her long hair fell loose around her shoulders, and her usually sharp eyes were glazed with drink.

Sitting beside her was a handsome guy in a white shirt. Holding a glass of wine, he was about to hook his arm around Katherine's for an intimate toast.

The surrounding crowd was roaring with excitement.

"Drink! Drink!"

"Our star has just returned from abroad. Katherine's gotta show him some real love tonight!"

A sharp female voice pierced through the clamor. "Right? If Lucas hadn't gone abroad to chase his dream, that loser Asher would never have gotten a chance to marry her."

"Loser..." Asher's fingers clenched around his phone.

Faced with the man's intimate gesture and the crowd's egging on, Katherine didn't pull away at all. She simply tilted her head, giving him a gentle smile.

That was a soft, indulgent look Asher had never once seen directed at him.

He recognized the man instantly. Lucas Terrell was Katherine's first love, a rising star who had recently returned from abroad.

His mind went blank with a deafening buzz. Memories from the past month replayed uncontrollably in his mind.

When Lucas returned, Katherine insisted on picking him up at the airport as an old college friend. When he went to an audition, she tagged along to give him moral support.

When he sprained his ankle, she rushed straight to the hospital to take care of him without a second thought. Two weeks ago, the two of them spent an entire afternoon testing out mattresses at a furniture showroom.

It was a double bed! They lay side-by-side on it, testing how firm or soft it was.

She had posted a picture on Instagram with the caption: [Helping my best friend pick out furniture. Having the worst time deciding!]

And last week, at eleven o'clock at night, Lucas called her out of the blue. She bolted out, claiming he was having an emotional breakdown and needed comfort.

She stayed out the entire night without even sending a text message to check in. When she returned the next morning, she casually remarked that Lucas had drunk too much, so she had stayed with him all night.

She always had a perfectly reasonable excuse. And every time, Asher chose to let it go.

He had constantly told himself that she loved him, that she just valued her relationships too deeply and lacked a sense of boundaries.

But now, as he looked at that soft smile on her face and the way she willingly raised her glass, all the excuses he had told himself shattered. It wasn't that she lacked boundaries. It was that he had never been included inside them.

To him, marriage was a safe harbor. To her, it was little more than a convenient inn.

Asher stood up, grabbed his car keys, and walked out.

At Room 888 of the Velvet Lounge, even the heavy, soundproof door couldn't fully block the noise inside. The deafening music, the wild laughter of men and women, and the clinking of glasses merged into a rowdy, decadent frenzy.

Asher stood there, rage and cold dread warring inside him. Right as he reached out to push the door open, a man's slurred, playful voice carried clearly through the crack.

It was Lucas.

"Katherine, hide-and-seek is almost over. I'm going to catch you soon."

Dr. Wilfred Conrad was hauled into the master bedroom by his collar, his feet skimming the floor as a security guard dragged him along. The moment he stepped inside, the stench hit him like a freight train. The metallic tang of blood mixed with the scent of cinnamon, mingling in the bright, blinding morning sunlight, creating a nauseating stench that made his stomach churn."Hurry up!" Katherine commanded.Asher had already been placed back onto the bed.Katherine sat at the bedside, her arms locked tightly around the lifeless figure. Her eyes stared straight at the doctor, yet her voice was eerily calm."He's throwing a tantrum at me, pretending to sleep and refusing to wake up. Give him an injection and make him stop this nonsense," she muttered.Wilfred wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and edged closer. With a glance, his heart sank into his stomach. The man on the bed was no longer merely pale; his complexion had taken on a dull, grayish-yellow, waxen hue. Half his fac

Katherine pushed open the front door. The living room was dead quiet, with a few security guards lounging on the couch, yawning. Seeing their boss return, they scrambled straight to their feet."Ms. Spears.""How was last night? Did my husband make a scene?" Katherine asked offhandedly as she changed her shoes. The lead security guard shook his head. "No. He was quiet. There wasn't any sound all night. He's probably still asleep.""Quiet? Is he giving me the silent treatment?"Holding the pastry box, she walked up the stairs and passed the spot where Lucas had fallen last night. The bloodstains on the floor had already been cleaned away, yet her heart still skipped a beat.An inexplicable sense of unease suddenly gripped her. She reached the master bedroom door, only to find it locked.Pulling out her key, she turned the lock. Inside, the heavy drapes were drawn tight, leaving the room as dark and stifling as a sealed tomb.A strange odor hung in the air; it smelled like rust,

"Pick up... Please, pick up..." Asher begged silently. "As long as you answer, as long as you come back and save me just this once, I won't hate you for anything that's happened before. Even if you really want me to grovel, I'll accept it."Finally, the line was connected."Hello?" Katherine's voice came through, framed by the distinctive hustle and bustle of a busy hospital in the background.Asher opened his mouth, desperate to speak, but all that came from his throat was a wet, gurgling sound of blood bubbles."Help... Help..."Though he poured every ounce of his remaining soul into that cry, the sound emerged so faint it was practically nonexistent, lighter than a whisper."Asher? What is it now?" Katherine's voice carried a tired, helpless edge. "If you're calling to explain yourself, wait until I get back. I'm at the hospital with Lucas while they're stitching him up."The doctor said if the impact had been just a little farther off, it would've ruined his face. Just wait

"Lucas!" Katherine called out in alarm. She stood over him and quickly examined his wound. Blood was gushing heavily; they needed to stop the bleeding immediately. She glanced back at Asher, who lay collapsed on the floor. Aside from his pale complexion, there were no obvious bloodstains on his body, and barely any scrapes."Get Lucas to the hospital first! Get the car ready! Hurry!"Decisive as ever, Katherine ordered the security guards to pick Lucas up and rush outside. At the door, she paused.Without looking back, she threw out a cold command. "Take my husband back to his room. No one enters without my permission."The front door slammed shut. Thunder rumbled outside as torrential rain poured down.Asher watched the figure vanish into the storm, the last flicker of light in his eyes dying out. By then, the fractured tip of a broken rib had punctured his lung.Blood was slowly filling his chest cavity. And the only person who could save him had just signed his death warrant

"Drop dead!"With Lucas's venomous whisper, Asher felt his wheelchair suddenly lift off the ground.A sickening sensation of weightlessness hit him, followed instantly by a violent, disorienting plunge. Then came the dull thud of a human body slamming against hard marble, mingled with the sharp crunch of metal twisting and snapping on the wheelchair frame. The noise echoed through the vast, luxurious villa, loud enough to make anyone's skin crawl. Asher tumbled down more than a dozen steps alongside the mangled wheelchair like a discarded sack of rags, finally crashing onto the icy tiles of the ground floor.A dead silence fell over the room. Then came the agonizing pain. From the impact, a twisted armrest drove into his left chest like a blunt blade. There was no blood-curdling scream; the agony was so intense that the sound caught in his throat. He could only hear a crack from deep within his chest. It was the sound of broken bone stabbing into soft tissue, an overture of destr

Katherine was shocked by the news. She darted a look at the tightly closed door, then at Lucas, who stood there with his head lowered, looking meek and submissive.Gritting her teeth, she warned him, "Go in. You are only allowed to apologize. Do you hear me? You have five minutes.""Got it," Lucas reassured her.Katherine turned on her heel and rushed toward the study. The second she turned away, the timid look in Lucas's eyes vanished instantly, replaced by venomous malice. He straightened up, adjusted his collar, pushed open the door, and stepped inside. The bedroom was dim, lit only by a faint, warm lamp by the bed. Asher sat in a wheelchair, staring blankly out the window. Hearing the door open, he assumed it was Katherine and didn't bother turning around."Asher..."The greeting was sweetly cloying yet laced with shivering coldness. Asher froze, then slowly turned his wheelchair around.Lucas stood there, every trace of his earlier humility gone. His hands were shoved cas
