Chapter 11

Autor: Bucket
I rolled my eyes, finding the entire display incredibly tiresome.

"Are you done? If you are, then leave. You're not welcome here."

I had no desire to exchange another word with someone so morally twisted and hellbent on blaming everyone but himself.

I turned and was about to shut the door when Josh slammed his hand against the frame to stop me.

"Courtney, do you really hate seeing me that much?" he asked, his eyes wild. "Are you really going to throw away 18 years of friendship?"

I rolled my eyes, finding the entire display incredibly tiresome. "Are you done? If you are, then leave. You're not welcome here."I had no desire to exchange another word with someone so morally twisted and hellbent on blaming everyone but himself.I turned and was about to shut the door when Josh slammed his hand against the frame to stop me. "Courtney, do you really hate seeing me that much?" he asked, his eyes wild. "Are you really going to throw away 18 years of friendship?"I stopped and looked at him over my shoulder."You destroyed those 18 years with your own hands a long time ago," I replied indifferently. "The moment you stole my admission ticket, we were even. Wait, no. You'll never be able to repay what you owe me in this lifetime."With that, I slammed the door shut with all my strength. No matter how much he screamed or pounded on the door outside, I never looked back. Some bonds, once severed, could never be mended. Some people, once missed, could never be re

"Well done, Courtney," Dad said, his voice hoarse but resolute. "People who do wrong should pay for their actions."Mom pulled me into her arms, her eyes still red-rimmed. "You've been through so much."I leaned into Mom's embrace and shook my head. "I haven't. Not even a little."All the pain I'd suffered had been repaid in the best possible way at this very moment.Wrongs were righted, and what went around came around. It was exactly what Josh and Sara deserved.Mom, Dad, and I didn't spare another glance at the wreckage of the ballroom or stay to listen to Mrs. Hooper's wailing. Instead, we simply turned and walked away.Outside, the sun was shining beautifully. The warm sunlight spilled over us, chasing away the last traces of gloom and cold.I took a deep breath. I still didn't know why that "bullet comment" had appeared that day, or why it had chosen me. But it didn't matter now. Things had turned out exactly as they should. After Josh and Sara were taken away, the case

The officer's voice was authoritative and firm, brooking no argument. The ballroom fell into a heavy silence as every gaze locked onto the once-envied golden couple. Josh stood frozen in place, unable to move a single muscle. He seemed unable to process the reality that a single admission ticket and my testimony were enough to have him led away in handcuffs. Sara had collapsed into a blubbering mess on the floor. Gone was the fragile, poor-little-me charm, and all that was left was terror and humiliation."Officers, no, we didn't mean it. We were just joking. We never wanted to hurt her. We really didn't."The officers' expressions remained impassive."Whether it was a joke or a crime isn't for you to decide. You'll give your statements at the station. Once the investigation is complete, the facts will speak for themselves."Josh's father, Tommy Hooper, rushed forward to intercept them. "Officers, this is all a misunderstanding—just kids fooling around. It's not that serious.

The evidence was crystal clear and undeniable—there was no longer any room for doubt. The entire room erupted."Oh my god! It was all true!""Josh actually stole Courtney's admission ticket! And Sara cut it to pieces!""How evil of them! They deliberately sabotaged Courtney's SAT!""And to think I believed them. I thought Courtney was the one lying. God, I was so blind!""How could Josh be so whipped? He gave up a guaranteed spot at Calder College like it was nothing and even helped Sara ruin Courtney's future. Does he have a screw loose or something?""All this time, Sara's been putting on that sweet, wounded act, but she's actually a monster!""This is terrifying. Are people like this even fit for college?"A wave of scorn, outrage, and ridicule rose up, crashing relentlessly onto the two figures at the center of the stage. The relatives and friends who had been fawning over them moments ago now all recoiled with visible revulsion. Josh's parents stood in the crowd, their

Mom's words hit the glittering ballroom like a thunderclap. The jeering laughter died in an instant, and a deathly silence fell over the room.Every pair of eyes swiveled in unison from Josh and Sara on stage to our table in the back corner. The microphone slipped from Josh's hand and clattered against the floor, emitting a sharp, screeching ring that echoed through the silence. The smug arrogance on his face congealed and then collapsed at a speed everyone could see.He stumbled forward two steps, his hands balling into tight fists."Mrs. Reid, what did you just say? Courtney got a guaranteed admission to Calder College?" he asked in a trembling voice. "Courtney, have you lost your mind?"Sara panicked too. Her delicate, tearful act shattered in an instant as the color drained from her. She grabbed Josh's arm, her eyes darting toward me in a fluster."Josh, don't listen to her nonsense. She must have forged the letter. She's just jealous and trying to ruin your party on purpose

"But some things are just wrong, plain and simple. Just because you're hurting doesn't mean you can shift the blame onto others—or go as far as fabricating chat logs to slander Sara and me."As he spoke, Josh turned a gentle gaze toward Sara."Sara cried for days because of this. She kept blaming herself, thinking it was her fault for not keeping a closer eye on Courtney, which led to her losing her admission ticket."But I want to say this to you, Sara—it's not your fault. Some people just go astray on their own, and we shouldn't punish ourselves for someone else's mistakes."Right on cue, Sara's eyes reddened. She lowered her head and daintily dabbed at the corner of her eye.The murmurs began to surge through the audience like a rising tide. "Oh my god, so that's what really happened.""I knew it! Josh and Sara are such good people. There's no way they'd do something like that.""How messed up is Courtney? She fools around with some lowlife, loses her own admission ticket,
