Chapter 3

Autor: Bucket
Then came the flood of messages—people fawning over them, gushing with envy, and egging them on.

After I'd scrolled through several dozen of these, Sara "cautiously" chimed in, "Um, everyone, maybe we should stop? Courtney must be feeling really awful right now. Even though she was careless enough to lose her admission ticket, it's not like she did it on purpose."

That shade-filled comment landed like water in boiling oil, and the group chat erupted instantly.

A few of the guys who always trailed behind Josh started mocking me without restraint, and several girls who had always been jealous of my grades joined in with their own snide remarks.

The class president, Todd Kern, and the academic chair, Sheila Archer, made token attempts to calm things down with a few "let's not pile on" messages, but their words were quickly swallowed up by the avalanche of vitriol.

Then, Tricia Cooley—a quiet straight-A student who rarely spoke up—sent a message. "Maybe we shouldn't spread rumors before we know what actually happened."

Less than three seconds after her message appeared, a system notification flashed—Josh had kicked her out of the group chat.

The chat fell silent for a heartbeat, and then the messages began flooding in even faster than before.

I stared at the words on my screen and let out a cold, incredulous laugh.

Did they really think I was that easy to push around? Did they truly believe they could rewrite reality just by silencing anyone who spoke for me?

My fingers flew across the screen. I selected screenshots from the chat logs in which Josh admitted to taking my ticket and Sara confessed to cutting it into pieces. Then, I dumped the entire file into the group chat.

I accompanied the images with a single sentence.

"Josh, Sara, did you two develop early-onset dementia? Can't you even remember what you said and did?"

The moment my message was sent, the group fell deathly silent for a full half minute. The ones who'd been the most vicious moments before went instantly mute.

I couldn't be bothered to wait for their backpedaling excuses, so I tapped into the settings and left the class group chat. Then, I blocked and deleted them all without missing a beat.

I had just put my phone down when it started ringing like crazy. The caller ID showed Josh's name.

I pressed the answer button, and his voice immediately tore through the receiver, thick with rage and profanity.

It was nasty and grating, to say the least.

"Courtney, have you lost your mind? How dare you post that in the group!"

I gripped the phone, suddenly feeling utterly drained by the sheer stupidity of it all.

"Josh, if you're mentally unwell, go see a doctor instead of taking it out on me."

With that, I hung up and promptly blocked his number too.

I had known him for 18 years. We grew up together, shared countless secrets, and during the most grueling days of senior year, we had encouraged each other, swearing we'd get into Calder College together.

But now, I felt like knowing him was a dark stain on my life.

Not long after, my best friend, Rosie Ingram, sent me a private message. Her tone was frantic.

"Courtney, are you okay? Josh just said in another group chat that he's not going to let this slide—that he's going to teach you a lesson. Be careful when you're out and about, okay?"

I looked at the message, but there was no trace of fear in my eyes. Instead, there was only cold disdain.

He wanted to teach me a lesson? As if he was even worthy.

I replied to Rosie, "Relax, I'm fine. He wouldn't dare do anything to me."

The ones who really needed to watch their backs were Josh and Sara themselves.

I tapped the screen lightly, creating yet another backup of the evidence I had saved. After reassuring Rosie, she sent over a few more screenshots from the other group chats.

When I opened them, all I felt was bitter irony.

In the group chat, Sara was playing the victim to the hilt, posting walls of text and claiming she was "crying her eyes out". She was telling everyone that I had faked the chat logs to slander her out of jealousy because she was with Josh.

I rolled my eyes, finding the entire display incredibly tiresome. "Are you done? If you are, then leave. You're not welcome here."I had no desire to exchange another word with someone so morally twisted and hellbent on blaming everyone but himself.I turned and was about to shut the door when Josh slammed his hand against the frame to stop me. "Courtney, do you really hate seeing me that much?" he asked, his eyes wild. "Are you really going to throw away 18 years of friendship?"I stopped and looked at him over my shoulder."You destroyed those 18 years with your own hands a long time ago," I replied indifferently. "The moment you stole my admission ticket, we were even. Wait, no. You'll never be able to repay what you owe me in this lifetime."With that, I slammed the door shut with all my strength. No matter how much he screamed or pounded on the door outside, I never looked back. Some bonds, once severed, could never be mended. Some people, once missed, could never be re

"Well done, Courtney," Dad said, his voice hoarse but resolute. "People who do wrong should pay for their actions."Mom pulled me into her arms, her eyes still red-rimmed. "You've been through so much."I leaned into Mom's embrace and shook my head. "I haven't. Not even a little."All the pain I'd suffered had been repaid in the best possible way at this very moment.Wrongs were righted, and what went around came around. It was exactly what Josh and Sara deserved.Mom, Dad, and I didn't spare another glance at the wreckage of the ballroom or stay to listen to Mrs. Hooper's wailing. Instead, we simply turned and walked away.Outside, the sun was shining beautifully. The warm sunlight spilled over us, chasing away the last traces of gloom and cold.I took a deep breath. I still didn't know why that "bullet comment" had appeared that day, or why it had chosen me. But it didn't matter now. Things had turned out exactly as they should. After Josh and Sara were taken away, the case

The officer's voice was authoritative and firm, brooking no argument. The ballroom fell into a heavy silence as every gaze locked onto the once-envied golden couple. Josh stood frozen in place, unable to move a single muscle. He seemed unable to process the reality that a single admission ticket and my testimony were enough to have him led away in handcuffs. Sara had collapsed into a blubbering mess on the floor. Gone was the fragile, poor-little-me charm, and all that was left was terror and humiliation."Officers, no, we didn't mean it. We were just joking. We never wanted to hurt her. We really didn't."The officers' expressions remained impassive."Whether it was a joke or a crime isn't for you to decide. You'll give your statements at the station. Once the investigation is complete, the facts will speak for themselves."Josh's father, Tommy Hooper, rushed forward to intercept them. "Officers, this is all a misunderstanding—just kids fooling around. It's not that serious.

The evidence was crystal clear and undeniable—there was no longer any room for doubt. The entire room erupted."Oh my god! It was all true!""Josh actually stole Courtney's admission ticket! And Sara cut it to pieces!""How evil of them! They deliberately sabotaged Courtney's SAT!""And to think I believed them. I thought Courtney was the one lying. God, I was so blind!""How could Josh be so whipped? He gave up a guaranteed spot at Calder College like it was nothing and even helped Sara ruin Courtney's future. Does he have a screw loose or something?""All this time, Sara's been putting on that sweet, wounded act, but she's actually a monster!""This is terrifying. Are people like this even fit for college?"A wave of scorn, outrage, and ridicule rose up, crashing relentlessly onto the two figures at the center of the stage. The relatives and friends who had been fawning over them moments ago now all recoiled with visible revulsion. Josh's parents stood in the crowd, their

Mom's words hit the glittering ballroom like a thunderclap. The jeering laughter died in an instant, and a deathly silence fell over the room.Every pair of eyes swiveled in unison from Josh and Sara on stage to our table in the back corner. The microphone slipped from Josh's hand and clattered against the floor, emitting a sharp, screeching ring that echoed through the silence. The smug arrogance on his face congealed and then collapsed at a speed everyone could see.He stumbled forward two steps, his hands balling into tight fists."Mrs. Reid, what did you just say? Courtney got a guaranteed admission to Calder College?" he asked in a trembling voice. "Courtney, have you lost your mind?"Sara panicked too. Her delicate, tearful act shattered in an instant as the color drained from her. She grabbed Josh's arm, her eyes darting toward me in a fluster."Josh, don't listen to her nonsense. She must have forged the letter. She's just jealous and trying to ruin your party on purpose

"But some things are just wrong, plain and simple. Just because you're hurting doesn't mean you can shift the blame onto others—or go as far as fabricating chat logs to slander Sara and me."As he spoke, Josh turned a gentle gaze toward Sara."Sara cried for days because of this. She kept blaming herself, thinking it was her fault for not keeping a closer eye on Courtney, which led to her losing her admission ticket."But I want to say this to you, Sara—it's not your fault. Some people just go astray on their own, and we shouldn't punish ourselves for someone else's mistakes."Right on cue, Sara's eyes reddened. She lowered her head and daintily dabbed at the corner of her eye.The murmurs began to surge through the audience like a rising tide. "Oh my god, so that's what really happened.""I knew it! Josh and Sara are such good people. There's no way they'd do something like that.""How messed up is Courtney? She fools around with some lowlife, loses her own admission ticket,
