Chapter 3

Author: Lilith Noir
That night, I dragged myself back to my cramped rental apartment completely exhausted, only to find Joanna waiting at the door. She was crossing her arms as she stared at me with a dark expression.

"Morgan, feeling a bit gutsy now, aren't we? Why did you speak up for that wench Tina today?!" she demanded the moment she opened her mouth.

"To make her lower her guard and believe you didn't send me," I answered without expression.

I then took out Tina's business card from my pocket and waved it in front of her.

"I'll be working at her company starting tomorrow."

Joanna stared at the business card and froze. She probably had not expected the plan to go this smoothly, but my attitude gave her a strange feeling that she was losing control.

Still, she warned me, "Don't get too invested in your act. A woman like Tina has impossibly high standards. She would never really look at a poor man like you. She's only using you to provoke Allen."

"That's my personal business," I said flatly.

"You..." Joanna choked on my words.

Suddenly, she stepped forward and grabbed the back of my neck, then kissed me hard. It lasted only a few seconds before she shoved me away so hard that I staggered into the wall behind me.

Then, she yelled, "Morgan, how dare you touch me!"

Before I could react, a dark figure rushed over from the stairwell and punched me hard in the stomach.

"You piece of…! How dare you touch Joanna!" Allen roared and kicked me to the floor while I was completely unprepared.

Joanna immediately threw herself into Allen's arms, sobbing hard.

"Allen, I was so scared... He said that even if I didn't want him anymore, he would still have me... He also said Tina could not compare to me at all..."

I curled up on the dirty concrete floor outside my apartment door. The pain in my stomach nearly made me throw up, and the taste of blood spread through my mouth.

"Hit him! Hit him until he can't get up."

Allen's voice echoed through the narrow hallway, clearly enjoying the venting of his anger. Several muscular bodyguards obeyed his orders as their polished leather shoes slammed into my ribs and back without mercy.

Sweat and blood blurred my vision, and I stared at the figure not far away.

Joanna leaned into the fake Allen's arms without looking at me even once.

She simply held his arm, stepped away in her thin high heels, and left without the slightest attachment.

After the chaos had passed, Tina and I completed our wedding without further trouble. We began an entirely new life. At work, we were the best partners. We fought side by side and overcame every challenge before us. In our personal lives, we were soulmates who supported and understood each other perfectly. Under our joint management, Clarke Group reached new heights it had never seen before. Before long, I heard what happened to Joanna from a friend in the industry. The Shaw family spent a great deal of money to get her out. It was said that to preserve the last of the family's dignity, and for the sake of the child, the Shaw family still made Joanna marry the penniless fake. Their wedding was held in silence, with no guests and no blessings. It was like some business transaction being made in haste. It was easy to imagine what their fake marriage would be like. The fake Allen, who had lost all his status and wealth, blamed Joanna for everything that went wrong and hit

Tina took out her phone and connected to the projector. She tapped open a video, and the projector played the footage on the huge screens on both sides of the church. It was dashcam footage. The footage was a little shaky, but the content was clear. In the video, a black sedan suddenly accelerated at the alley entrance and slammed into a young man who was about to cross the street. That man was me five years ago. The face in the driver's seat, twisted with panic and violence, had been recorded clearly. That face belonged to Joanna! The entire place fell silent. Everyone gasped, their shocked gazes moving between the screen and Joanna. Joanna's face turned pale in an instant. She looked at the screen, her whole body trembling as she muttered, "No... It was not... How could..." I looked at her, and the hatred in my heart suddenly felt meaningless despite already being grinded away. The truth was, I had never planned to use this to take revenge on her even after I reco

On the day of the wedding, I wore a fitting suit and stood before the priest, waiting for my bride. Tina wore a white wedding gown and walked toward me slowly on her father's arm, a happy smile on her face. She was as beautiful as an angel who had decided to grace Earth. At that moment, I felt like the luckiest man in the world. Just as the priest solemnly asked whether I would take Tina as my wife and spend my life with her, the heavy church doors were shoved open from outside. A shrill, familiar voice cut through the air. "You can't get married!" Joanna ran in like a madwoman, wearing a white dress that was completely out of place at the wedding. Her hair was messy, and her face was as pale as a ghost. The guests were taken by surprise and turned to look at the uninvited guest. She rushed straight toward the altar and touched her still-flat stomach. Then, she announced with all her strength, "I'm pregnant with Allen's child! You cannot get married!" The news hit the

After we got into the car, the warm air dispelled the chill from the outside. I took off my rain-soaked coat. Tina took a clean towel from the storage compartment beside her and handed it to me. "Dry yourself or you'll catch a cold." Her voice was very soft, but it carried a power that softened my heart. I took the towel and wiped the water from my hair. For a moment, the car fell silent, with only raindrops tapping against the window. "You don't seem surprised at all." I broke the silence and looked at her calm expression. From the shocking reversal at the engagement banquet to Joanna's pleading, she had always stayed composed as if everything were under her control. Tina turned to me and smiled, a hint of slyness in that smile. "Surprised by what? That she would come bothering you, or that she would bring up the past?" "Both," I said in honesty. "I'm never surprised when someone who has lost everything tries to grab on to anything that could remotely save her, even if

I looked at her coldly and said each word clearly. "Joanna, from the moment you tore up our contract and made me get close to Tina, there was nothing left between us other than hate. There is no debt there." I returned the words she had once said to me outside my apartment. "Ms. Shaw, have you forgotten? I'm nothing but a stray you brought home. How could a stray ever be worthy of you?" "You..." Joanna's face instantly turned pale. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out. As she was dragged out of the banquet hall, my father picked up the microphone and made an announcement. "On behalf of Clarke Group, I hereby formally announce," he said, his voice firm and resonant, each word landing like a heavy hammer, "that Clarke Group and all other entities under my personal name will terminate all business cooperation with Shaw Group from this moment onward. "Projects that are currently ongoing will be completed according to the contract, but they will not be renewed. Projects

Joanna froze in place. "No... Impossible..." she muttered, instinctively looking at the fake Allen beside her, hoping for an answer. She was too stunned and her mind went blank. She could barely think. She grabbed the fake Allen and questioned him hysterically. "Allen! What exactly is going on here?! Say something!" The fake Allen panicked. He was just an orphan the Clarke family had found to calm the family down during the chaos. He was a proper substitute, as he looked a lot like me. Now that the real one had appeared, it was time for him to exit the stage. He stammered, cold sweat rolling down his face. He was unable to say a single word. Just then, the doors of the banquet hall opened again. My parents walked in, surrounded by several personal assistants. "Thank you all for coming tonight to witness my son Allen's engagement ceremony." My father's voice was steady, instantly silencing the room. "Five years ago, my son had an accident. He suffered a serious head
