Chapter 286

Author: Hello Spring
When Liz opened the door, William was standing there with a smile. “I didn’t wake you, did I?”

“No, I just finished getting ready.”

“Do you remember the reward you promised me? Isn’t it about time to make good on it?”

Liz blinked, then said, “The day’s already half gone. If I give it to you now, don’t you think you’re getting shortchanged?”

Earlier, William had bargained for one full day with her. In return, he had gone to Mrs. Smith Sr. and persuaded her to let Liz move back into Crestwood Heights. He had kept his end of the deal, so now it was her turn to honor hers.

“That’s fine,” William said easily. “We still have the whole evening.”

Seeing how firm he was, Liz gave in. “Alright. So… how do you want this date to go?”

The word “date” slipped out before she could stop it, sending a flutter through her chest and heat across her cheeks.

“I already planned it,” he said. “You’ll come grocery shopping with me, and then tonight we’ll cook together and have dinner.”

“That’s it?” L

Liz and William spent more than two hours at the supermarket, leaving with their bags full. When they stepped out of the elevator back at his building, Liz noticed a slim figure waiting outside William’s door. The moment she recognized Riley, the smile on her face faded.William’s brows drew together. “What are you doing here?”Catching his displeasure, Riley’s smile froze for a beat. She quickly recovered, her tone light. “Your mom asked me to drop something off for you.”“What is it?”“This.” She pulled a sleek black credit card from her bag and held it out to him. The gold trim made it look like one of those exclusive cards that only a handful of people could get. “She told me to give it to you. I forgot last time.”William looked down at the card, his face going cold. “Tell her I don’t want it.”Riley bit her lip, as if she wanted to say more. But after a subtle glance at Liz, she swallowed her words. “I’ll stop by the hospital another day. I won’t bother you tonight.”She

Liz smiled as she pulled out her phone and snapped a quick picture of William, bent over the meat counter. She wasted no time posting it to her feed.“Dr. Sanders being so serious about picking out meat—how adorable is that?”Almost immediately, Jane liked the post and dropped a comment.“Well, well. You’re not even official yet and already showing off?”A small smile flickered in Liz’s eyes as she typed back.“I’m just sharing my day.”Jane shot back at once.“Sure, sure. We get it—you're at the grocery store with Dr. Sanders. Go enjoy your domestic bliss.”Liz replied with a laugh.“Yes ma'am.”While the two of them bantered in the comments, a new notification popped up. Jeff had liked her post. Liz frowned, suddenly remembering she still had him on her contacts list. Without hesitation, she blocked him.Back when Zac had betrayed her, Jeff hadn’t missed a chance to mock her, pushing her to give up and sneering behind her back. None of it had ever been for her sake. It had

Zac’s face stayed blank as he looked at her. “Xena, I’ve already promised to marry you. Things with Liz are over. You can stop all your little schemes. They only make you look like a clown.”Xena’s expression froze. Her lips trembled before she bit down hard on them.“I understand.”Zac didn’t bother saying more. He turned and walked away. She started to follow, but her phone suddenly rang. Glancing at the screen, she saw her mother’s name. With a frown, she hesitated before answering.“Mom, what is it?”“Xena, how are things in Stanley City?”She hadn’t told her family about her pregnancy yet. She planned to wait until the wedding with Zac to make the announcement.“I’m fine. How’s Dad’s arthritis lately?”“He’s doing alright. But that’s not why I called. There’s something I need to discuss with you.”Xena’s stomach sank. “What is it?”“It’s your brother. He’s been out of college for over a year now, and he still hasn’t found a job. He can’t just sit at home forever. I was

Liz shook her head. “Dinner should definitely be on me as a thank-you. But the money for the modifications is still yours.”When she saw William about to refuse, she added quickly, “I know that amount may not mean much to you, but I don’t want to owe you too much.”From the car he drove, and from the fact that Riley was his childhood friend, Liz already knew he couldn’t be just an ordinary doctor. The Hendersons were one of the most prominent families in Halston. Anyone who grew up alongside them could hardly be ordinary. The only possibility she could think of was the Sanders family, the most powerful family in Halston. She didn’t know much about them, but Michael had once mentioned that compared to the Sanders, all the prominent families in Stanley City put together barely measured up. That was one of the reasons she hesitated about getting involved with him.Just as the Smiths had looked down on Zac, a family empire like the Sanders would almost certainly look down on the Smith

Jane arched a brow. “I think you like him too. Aren’t you going to make a move?”Liz shook her head. “Not yet. I’ll wait until things settle down. Right now, I don’t have the energy to think about it.”She still wanted to watch a little longer, to see how William handled things with Riley. If he couldn’t keep his distance from her, Liz wasn’t planning to start anything with him.“Fair enough,” Jane said.Liz had only just come out of her last relationship. Expecting her to dive straight into another one would be rushing it.Before long, Jane’s car pulled up near Crestwood Heights. As they waited at the last stoplight before the building, Jane peered ahead. “That guy standing by the gate—don’t tell me that’s William?”Liz followed her line of sight. She couldn’t make out his face clearly, but something in her gut told her it was him.“It looks like him,” she said softly.“He came all the way here just to wait for you?”“Maybe.”Liz hadn’t expected William to actually wait for
