Isabella sat quietly in the back seat of her car, staring through the tinted window at the worn-down building across the street. The building was old, its faded walls stained by years of rain and neglect. A broken fence leaned around the narrow compound, while empty bottles and plastic bags were scattered near the entrance. The windows were dusty, and one of the curtains on the upper floor hung halfway off its rod.

Isabella’s eyes narrowed. So this was where Olive had come from.

  • You Lost Me, Desmond Vaughn    The baby

Olive woke to the faint, rhythmic beeping of a monitor. For several seconds, she didn’t know where she was. The ceiling above her was unfamiliar, painted a dull white that seemed almost too bright for her aching eyes. A sharp antiseptic smell lingered in the air, and somewhere nearby, medical equipment hummed softly. She tried to move. Pain immediately pulled through her abdomen. Olive sucked in a shaky breath and instinctively placed a hand over her stomach. The memories came rushing back — her parents, her mother’s hand in her hair, her father’s grip around her arm, the pavement, the blood. Her breath caught. She pushed herself up slightly, panic flooding her chest.“My baby…”The movement made her dizzy. Before she could try again, a man in a white coat stepped toward her.“Easy. Don’t sit up too quickly.”Olive looked at him with frightened eyes. The doctor placed a hand near her shoulder, helping her settle back against the pillow.“You’re safe. Just lie still for me.”“Where am

  • You Lost Me, Desmond Vaughn    Years of pain

Olive remained pressed against the wall long after Isabella’s car disappeared from sight. Her fingers were still wrapped tightly around the envelope of money, but she could barely feel it anymore. Isabella had found them — the people Olive had spent years trying to erase from her life, the people she had once believed were dead, the people she had prayed would never find her again. Her chest tightened painfully. When Olive had been seven, she had been taken in by the couple after they convinced the orphanage that they wanted to give a lonely child a home. They had appeared kind in front of the staff. They had smiled at Olive, promised her a family, and acted as though they had rescued her. It hadn’t lasted long. The moment Olive was alone with them, everything changed. She became a child they could use. They made her work around the house from a young age. When she started earning money, they took almost everything she made. If she protested, her father beat her. Her mother watched an

So this was where Olive had come from. She looked down at the file resting on her lap. She hadn’t come here because she trusted the report. She had come because she no longer trusted Olive. Ever since the confrontation at the mansion, something about Olive’s answers had bothered her. Olive had insisted that the couple were not her real parents. She had denied knowing them in the way Isabella expected her to. And when Isabella had questioned her about her family, Olive had repeated the same story she had given from the beginning. She was an orphan.

  • You Lost Me, Desmond Vaughn    After one year

Olive was halfway down the stairs when her phone vibrated. She ignored it. She had spoken to Maya only a few minutes earlier, and the conversation had left her with enough to think about. Maya had complained about almost getting caught at the club when her cousin showed up unexpectedly. She had also admitted how difficult it would be to walk away from Rick after working for him for so many years, even though she was beginning to want a different life.Olive had listened, but her mind had kept returning to the message Maya had sent the night before. People were living at the address. People. She still didn’t know whether that meant her foster parents had survived or someone else had moved into the house after they died. Her phone vibrated again. Olive stopped on the stairs and pulled it from her pocket. Unknown number. Her brows drew together. She stared at it for a moment before answering.“Hello?”There was silence on the other end. Then a rough male voice came through.“You really t

  • You Lost Me, Desmond Vaughn    What about Olive

Genevieve finished the last few bites of her noodles and pushed the empty cup aside. The supermarket had grown even quieter. Only the soft hum of the refrigerators and the occasional passing car outside disturbed the silence. She reached for her small wallet. Then stopped. Nothing. She checked again. Still nothing. Genevieve frowned and searched the table, then looked around her. Her phone was there. Her keys were there. Her wallet wasn’t.She checked the floor beneath the table. Nothing. A strange feeling settled in her stomach. She hadn’t taken it out after paying. She was certain of that. Genevieve stood and walked toward the counter.“Excuse me?”The cashier looked up.“Yes, ma’am?”“I think I lost my wallet. I was sitting over there.”The young man glanced toward her table.“Are you sure you brought it in?”“Yes. I had it before I came here.”He hesitated for a moment before reaching for the monitor behind the counter.“We have cameras. Let me check.”Genevieve waited while he pu

Genevieve grabbed her coat and left her apartment. A small twenty-four-hour supermarket sat a few minutes from the building. It wasn’t anything luxurious, but it was quiet at that hour, and she only wanted something to eat and a little time away from her thoughts. She bought a cup of Korean noodles, a bottled drink, and a few other things before settling at one of the small tables near the glass wall. Outside, the street was almost empty.Genevieve ate slowly, her gaze fixed on the passing headlights. She was halfway through her noodles when raised voices caught her attention. She looked toward the counter. An elderly man stood there with a packet of food tucked beneath his worn jacket. Beside him stood an elderly woman holding several items she clearly hadn’t paid for.The cashier stared at them.“You two know the rules yet anytime you both come here all you do is stir up problem.”The woman rolled her eyes.“We’re paying.”“With what?”The man gave a low chuckle.“Put it on the tab.
