Chapter 2

Autor: Evil SIL
Lena was sitting in the swivel chair across from me, filing her nails.

When she saw me come back, she did not even bother looking up. "Oops. My hand slipped. It's just a crappy computer. You're not seriously going to get upset about it, are you?"

Looking at that smug, superior expression on her face, I almost laughed from sheer disbelief.

For the longest time, I could not figure out why Lena had been targeting me from the very first day I joined the company. Then yesterday, I happened to overhear her gossiping with a few coworkers in the break room.

"That Chloe girl dresses like she got her clothes from a thrift store, and she can't even be bothered to put on makeup."

"Do you know who personally brought her into the company on her first day? The general manager!"

"Who knows what kind of tricks she used to get that kind of treatment? I'm the CEO's own little sister, and even the general manager has never been that attentive to me. What makes her so special?"

That was when everything finally clicked.

Lena had been playing the part for so long that she had actually convinced herself she was the company's little princess.

Remembering my brother's warning on the phone, I felt a fresh wave of anger. I pulled out my phone and took several pictures of my blistered palms and the ruined computer.

The next morning, the Planning Department held a meeting.

The vice president, Bennett Turner, sat at the head of the table with a proposal in his hands, his face glowing with excitement.

"This proposal is outstanding! The data is thorough, and it gets straight to the heart of the problem. Lena, did you write this entire proposal yourself?"

Lena stood up, pride shining in her eyes. "Mr. Turner, you're too kind. I was only doing my job. After all... you have to treat the company like it's your own home."

She deliberately emphasized the words 'your own home'.

Adrian immediately started clapping, a sycophantic grin plastered across his face.

"Lena really has the right attitude! Mr. Turner, I think she's more than qualified to become a full-time employee early. And since our assistant team leader position has been vacant for a while, why not let her take that position too?"

Bennett waved his hand. "Approved."

Lena turned around and shot me a provocative look.

I sat quietly in the corner, head lowered, barely managing to keep a smile off my face.

Yes, I had written that proposal.

However, I had a little habit. Whenever I had a draft that had not been finalized and officially handed over, I always planted a hidden data trap somewhere inside. All it took was a slight change to one of the external parameters, and the entire profit projection would collapse. Instead of making a profit, the company would be looking at a massive loss.

Lena had not even understood what she was looking at. She had simply snatched up the proposal and claimed it as her own.

Just imagining the way she would get torn apart when the numbers blew up had me practically giddy.

After the meeting, Lena strutted over to my desk, already acting like she was the assistant team leader. "I'm officially a full-time employee today, so I'm buying coffee for the whole team. Hey, you. Ms. Miserable. Go downstairs and bring back 30 cups of coffee."

I did not move. "It's working hours. And getting coffee is an assistant's job."

"Just go!" Adrian slammed a hand onto the desk. "What, the assistant team leader can't order an intern around now? Refuse, and I'll cut your performance bonus!"

It was 100 degrees outside, and the pavement looked like it was practically smoking under the sun.

By the time I made it back to the office carrying thirty cups of coffee, my shirt was soaked through with sweat. My head was spinning, and I could barely keep my balance.

I set the coffee down on Lena's desk.

"That's $220. Cash, Venmo, or PayPal?"

Lena had just picked up a cup when she heard that. Her hand froze. "Are you asking me for money? You ran an errand for me, and now, you want an errand fee too? Seriously, why are you so petty?"

"I'm talking about the money I paid for the coffee." I stared straight at her.

"Oh!" Lena suddenly let out a little cry. Her foot caught on something, and she stumbled forward. The piping-hot latte splashed directly across me.

I sucked in a sharp breath as pain shot through me. My skin turned bright red almost instantly.

"Oh, wow. I'm so sorry. I just lost my balance." Lena covered her mouth, but there was not a trace of sincerity in her voice. "Just consider the coffee my treat. No need to thank me."

I stared at the stains spreading across my shirt as black spots started swimming in front of my eyes.

I braced myself against the desk and looked at Adrian. "I'm suffering from heat exhaustion, and I've been scalded. I need to take the rest of the day off and go home."

Adrian rolled his eyes. "Take the day off? Did you file a request ahead of time? If you leave, who's going to do your work? What exactly does the company pay you for?"

I was speechless. Who was supposed to know ahead of time that they were going to get coffee dumped on them and suffer heat exhaustion?

That was it. I was done.

I yanked the employee ID badge from around my neck and slammed it onto the desk. "Fine. I quit. Anyone who wants this miserable job can have it!"

Adrian gave a harsh laugh.

"Sure. Go ahead and miss half a day. Your perfect-attendance bonus will be gone, and don't even think about passing your internship evaluation. If you're thinking of becoming a full-time employee, you can keep dreaming!"

I did not care about that little bit of money anyway. I had just picked up my bag and was about to walk out when my phone buzzed.

It was a message from Mom: [Your brother just called. He said you're causing trouble at the company again. You have to stay at the bottom until you become a full-time employee. If you dare quit halfway through, forget about getting the $1 million startup fund for your design studio.]

Lena's raised hand froze in midair. "... Eric Jones?"Her lips trembled, and her legs began to shake. As a fake heiress who had spent months swaggering around the company and deceiving everyone, how could she not know what that name meant?Eric Jones was the real man in control of Jones Group. Rumor had it that he was ruthless, decisive, and absolutely not someone anyone in the business world dared to cross.Adrian was even worse. He collapsed onto the couch, his face completely white."M-Mr. Jones!"Eric did not spare those clowns another glance. He strode over and carefully lifted me into his arms."Chloe..." His normally steady voice trembled slightly.I rested against his warm chest, and the last thread holding me together finally snapped. "Eric..."I opened my mouth, but my throat was so raw that I could barely make a sound. Tears rolled down my cheeks. "They... wouldn't let me complain… They forced me to drink... They were going to break my legs..."Eric looked at the

I struggled with everything I had. The liquor went down the wrong pipe, and I broke into a violent coughing fit. A scorching pain spread from my stomach through my entire body, like thousands of needles stabbing me from the inside."Hold her down! Don't let her spit it out!" Adrian shouted excitedly from the side.Lena held up her phone, recording me as she laughed so hard her shoulders shook. "Chloe, look at you now! Aren't you usually so proud? Don't you look down on me? Look at you now, just like a slave!"Half the bottle of liquor was forced down my throat. The bodyguards finally let go. I collapsed onto the carpet, clutching my stomach as waves of pain tore through it.Adrian gave an icy laugh and pulled out the forged confession and a box of red ink paste. He tossed both onto the floor in front of me."Enough. Look at you. You're barely alive, and even Mr. White has lost interest. Sign it, stamp your fingerprint on it, and we'll call it a day."Lena walked over and planted

By 5:00 pm that day, the entire company was in chaos. The head of the partner company stormed into the office with a team of lawyers, threatening to take us straight to court if the company did not pay the ten-million-dollar penalty by the end of the day.Bennett tore into Adrian and Lena in his office."I don't care what you have to do. Just make sure Mr. White calms down! If anything happens to this company, both of you are fired!"The moment Adrian stepped out of Bennett's office, he was sweating bullets. "Lena, what are we going to do? Mr. White is notorious for being impossible to deal with. How are we supposed to calm him down?"Lena's eyes shifted, and a vicious smile slowly appeared on her face. "Isn't Mr. White a womanizer? And don't we happen to have a perfect scapegoat right here?"Adrian froze for a second. Then, his eyes lit up. "You mean... Chloe?""This whole mess was caused by her anyway. Have her spend dinner with Mr. White tonight and apologize to him in person

I was locked in the underground warehouse for an entire night. There was no water, and no one brought me any food.At 8:00 am the next day, the steel door finally opened. Adrian stood outside, covering his nose as he looked at me with obvious disgust."Chloe, have you come to your senses yet? Are you signing or not?"I braced myself against the wall and slowly pushed myself to my feet. My vision went black for a moment, and my legs were so weak I could barely stand.Still, I gritted my teeth and glared at him."No. I didn't do it, and I wouldn't sign it if I were dying.""Pretty stubborn." Adrian gave a humorless laugh and tossed a filthy cleaning uniform at my feet."If you refuse to sign, then don't blame me for giving you some real work. The cleaner called in sick today, so all twelve bathrooms on the first through third floors are your responsibility. You don't get off until they're all clean."I said nothing. I picked up the uniform and pulled it on.Fine. Let them enjo

"If you refuse to admit it, my brother is the president of this company. Once he gets back, I'll make sure you can't find work anywhere in this industry!"I slowly rose to my feet, a hollow smile curling at the corner of my mouth. "Sure."I looked straight at Lena and spoke each word carefully. "Since your brother is the president, why don't we call him right now and ask him exactly how he plans to make sure I can't work in this industry?"Lena's face stiffened as her eyes darted away."Who do you think you are? My brother is incredibly busy. He's overseas negotiating a multibillion-dollar deal. Do you seriously think you're important enough to hear his voice?"I tugged at the corner of my mouth and took a step toward her. "A multibillion-dollar deal? Funny. I also heard the president is overseas negotiating an acquisition."I stared directly into her eyes, lowering my voice. "But the president's last name is Jones, and yours is Rogers. So, tell me, which father did you get this

Inside the bathroom, I leaned against the cold tile wall, my head pounding like it was about to split open and my whole body burning with fever. I was furious and humiliated, barely able to believe that I had actually been pushed this far.In my 22 years of life, when had I ever been treated this badly? They did not want me to complain? To hell with keeping a low profile!I was going to make sure everyone in this company knew exactly what had happened to me today.I pulled out my phone and created a family group chat, adding Mom, Dad, my brother, and a whole bunch of relatives.I was just about to hit the voice-message button and unload every single thing that had happened today when I suddenly heard two female coworkers gossiping in hushed voices outside by the sinks."Hey, did you hear? Lena totally embarrassed herself in the conference room today!""Serves her right! She always acts like she owns the place. She walks around with her chin practically touching the ceiling. But
